Partly our fault for not making reservations ahead of time, we were left with El Parador or else noisy, alcohol rich restaurants in town. We came to visit El Parador which sits a bit outside the city center and were impressed by the beautiful construction and the extremely lovely and gracious gardens. So we dove in and returned for New Year's Eve. We knew the price ahead of time, it is true. We though we'd get some fabulous dinner. That was unfortunately not to be the case. Meager portions with mediocre food. Very disappointing. In a city which has huge abundance of great restaurants and otherwise amazing food, we were dumbfounded to be served such terrible food, having dished out more than about 1,200 pesos per person! And one had to pay extra for alcohol- they only sold alcohol and spirits by the bottle and refused, for instance, to serve a screwdriver unless you bought the bottle of vodka! ||Outright shameless opportunistic attitude! Read moreWe went for a special dinner during Christmas to the restaurant of "el parador San Juan de Dios" and were very shocked! The dinner costs 750 Mxn per person, food was ok but the location absolutely not adequate for this level of hotel and this price level considering average Mexican dinner prices. At 10°C outside temperature, they gave us a table in a tent with almost NO HEATING, so we had Christmas dinner at 16°C, without any tablecloth, music or decoration inside the tent. To go to that dinner buffet you had to leave the tent in the garden to another room inside, that's why they left open the doors of the tent all the time. The Service team was relatively slow and couldn't improve any of the points mentioned above. All in all it was a very disappointing experience at the special evening. We choose the restaurant due to the good image of the entire hotel, but I can't recommend anybody to visit the restaurant especially as there are so many other nice locations...
Read moreThis hotel is set on a large property with beautiful gardens. It is very private, peaceful and quiet as it is about a 5 minute drive out of town. The reception staff are excellent, they speak basic English and were very helpful with anything we needed during our stay. The rooms were full of character with a king sized very comfortable bed, a TV, heater and a beautiful fireplace in each room. The bathrooms are large and spotless with timber floors which flow throughout the large room. Breakfast is not included however we had the 'Americano' breakfast in the restaurant and it was great. It is about a $30 cab ride from the town centre, however lets you escape the bustle of town and take in the magic of San Cristobal. Every evening the staff lit our fireplace for us which was great. Highly recommend...
