City Express is a low cost chain Mx acquired by Marriott recently. I was surprised but I adventured to use Bonvoy points to book a room at the City Centro SLP (terrace pictures looked nice). I will never make that error again.|The good|Location is very convenient if you like to stroll downtown. There are several parks, restaurants and cafes worth visiting.|The bad|- This property doesn’t have a parking lot. It doesn’t have a check-in car shoulder. It doesn’t have valet parking. In a single-lane downtown-busy street, if you want to let your family descend from the car close to the hotel, you'll stop all the street traffic. The hotel has an agreement with an external parking lot half a block away. Good luck carrying luggage over the street if you bring three or more pieces. The parking lot is ridiculously small and puts vehicle at risk of being hit. There is a much larger multiple-story parking lot 1/2 block farther away from the hotel.|- We got a standard room. It was super small. Old. The floor tiles in the aisle are old, worn out and filthy. There was a gap between the door frame and the floor. Got me nervous when another guest complained for scorpions at the front desk.|- Went with kids to the terrace to use the pool. Water was unclean and cold. Couldn't see the kids feet from above. You could feel dirt/sand in the pool floor. The whole area felt abandoned. No staff personnel in the bar. Pool chairs/matresses looked dirty. That's when I decided to leave.|- I called Mariott and informed them of my decision. I would leave next day as it was already late. They informed the hotel. Shockingly for a Marriott property, the hotel declined returning the points for the nights not used, even after talking with the Manager. Poor business. They probably needed more the income than I needed the reimbursement. I went ahead and reserved at the Courtyard for the rest of the nights, and had a...
Read moreBeautiful, beautiful renovation of a historical building. I've been to a lot of hotels in Mexico, and often what you find is that, while the pictures are amazing, one typically finds most hotels to be substandard in some construction detail or another. Maybe crumbling drywall, leaky split air ac systems, etc.
This property, on the other hand, I honestly couldn't find any issues with the construction or details. They did an amazing job integrating modern amenities with the original shell of the building. The pictures that they have on their website and simply doesn't do this property justice.
The rooms were nicely maintained. Everything was clean, modern and worked, on par with any nice Marriott, my usual choice in hotels. My only gripe is that the room was a bit on the smaller side (We had a single king size bedroom) and there wasn't a fridge. If you stay here, I recommend splurging and getting the suite. For 3 nights, it was only $70-80usd more total at my time of booking.
We didn't discover the roof deck pool until the very last day unfortunately, so really didn't get to enjoy the roof deck and the amazing views. The food at the restaurant in the hotel was actually good as well, and the manager was gracious enough to explain to us the history of the building. All the staff were friendly and we didn't have any issues, other than the cleaning staff trying to make entry early in the morning without notice, which I find to be typical in Mexico.
Excellent location, we found San Luis Potosi to have one the nicest historical city centers of any Mexican city we've come across. Only a couple blocks from the closest OXXO convenience store, which is open to 11pm. Restaurants that I recommend nearby are Cafe Corta'o for their chilaquiles (served into the afternoon if I remember correctly) and Ceilo Tinto for a more romantic...
Read moreAn historic hotel in the heart of the historic district. Beautiful inside and out. Six adults stayed in three rooms for a couple of nights. Check in was smooth and easy. The front desk staff is fully professional - but maybe a bit too much because they came across a little stiff. Maggie the bellhop that helped us was the opposite. She was friendly and talkative and made us feel welcome from the start.
Two of the rooms we checked into had king size beds and were spectacular. High ceilings, moldings on the wall, the small closet and the bathroom were all recently remodeled. The third room had two full size beds and looked larger but had low ceilings and not as grand as the other two. The beds were firm and the bedding crisp.
The thing that makes this hotel district is the architecture and amenities. Built in the late 1800s, City Centro Progreso is a feast for the eyes. The stonework throughout the hotel is marvelous considering the modern amenities like a pool, a gym and an elevator.
Happened to be there for Fathers Day and their Fathers Day brunch was delicious. Even though the restaurant was packed and they kept running out of orange juice, the entire staff including the hotel manager made their rounds and kept everyone happy.
The only problem we had is that the air conditioning went out in one of the rooms. Two in our party had to be relocated into another room.
Overall our stay at City Centro Progreso Hotel was pleasant...
