Golden City Light Hotel — Hotel in Mandalay District

Myself and 4 friends booked a 1 night stay in their dormitory rooms. We were arriving in late from a night bus and expected to arrive between 1am and 2am. When booking there was no available check in time that late but we rang them to tell them how late we would be and also sent an email telling them. It also said that their reception was 24 hours so we didn't see a problem. When we arrived around 3am absolutely exhausted from the bus and just wanting the bed we had already paid a deposit for we were told that their were none available and they had allowed other people to book them as we didn't show up!! They really were not at all helpful and had no idea what was going on or how to deal with the situation. It was only because we basically refused to leave that they finally rang another hostel to get us a bed. All of this took over an hour when all we wanted to do was go to bed. Then once they finally got us this other hostel they said they would get us a car to take us there. In our minds this was the least they could do due to their complete incompetence. Once we were dropped off the taxi driver demanded payment! This then caused the drama of having to ring the hotel and argue the point of why we were not paying for the taxi and we were never told we would have to in the first place! To start with, I booked this hotel as a hostel, since they have couple of shared dorm on the group floor. One cannot expect to have hostel spirit where can meet many foreigners and travellers. Contrary, there is no common area where you can hang out, but just couple of couches in the lobby. On the other hand, the good thing is that in the price of the dorm you have also breakfast included which is standard for the hotel so it is quite good value for the price. Plus the rooms have modern AC that can be used at any time, not as many hostels do just during the night time. The location is ok, walking distance from the palace.
