Staff were friendly, the two girls up front were super helpful and attentive. The rooms are basic but the AC works well and there is a ceiling fan to help with the air circulation which is important in the summers. ||||I was thrilled to see a bathtub in the bathroom for a hotel of this price range. I had hoped to take a quick bath after my long trip from Hsipaw but quickly changed my mind when the bathtub water turned up green. I instead settled for soaking my feet. There is also a stupid workaround for the airconditioner, at least in my room being on the inside, they decided to divert the dripping water from the AC directly into the bathtub using a pipe. I had wondered what was dripping behind me as I soaked my feet and quickly discovered this. ||||My room was situated next to an alley with residents in the neighboring area pass by regularly so I could hear lots of talking and the occasional shouting but noises from the street were not so bad.||||Despite all that, my experience at this place was quite good and at the discounted prices I was given, I would certainly stay at this hotel again, maybe try...
Read moreI stayed here for one night in August 2017 after visiting Monywa and before taking the train to Hsipaw.||This hotel is not 24 hours, which is fine. |However when checking in I explained that I would be taking the 4am train to Hsipaw and would need to check out at 3.30am the next morning. The girl that checked me in assured me that this would be fine.||Later that day after buying my train ticket I told a different man who was on reception that I had now bought the ticket and confirmed that I would need to check out at 3.30am the next morning. He told me that reception wouldn't be open then. I explained that the other girl said it would be ok, and he said that it would be fine and that he would be there waiting. In the morning there was nobody there, and I had to wake up the staff that were sleeping in the foyer to check out and unlock the dooe for me.||On a previous visit to Mandalay I stayed at Downtown @ Mandalay and they were amazing - the only reason I didn't stay there again is that I thought it would be easier to stay closer to the station.||Overall not a great place, the rooms were okay but...
Read moreThe Nylon Hotel deserves landmark status as one of only three down-town-area hotels open to foreigners during the 1990’s. It continues to be the favorite of free-lance journalists and FIT Burmaphiles who come every year. The old wing remains nearly unchanged, with idiosyncratic fixtures and great character built up in a time when Myanmar was cut off from the rest of the world. Each of the rooms of the old wing is unique with mismatched hardware and a layout fit together like a jig-saw puzzle. The new wing offers a bit more standard comforts. Everything is solidly built from the plumbing supply store downstairs and works when you need it to work. Go here to be in the most vibrant and central part of Mandalay where you can sit in the front bench and be endlessly entertained by the incredible diversity of Mandalay’s street life. Get an exterior room with a window to the street if you are like me and want to hear the sound stage of Mandalay as it slows to a crawl after 10PM then re-awakens at sunrise. There are many new hotels in Mandalay but none with more character or...
