Do NOT stay here, BIG TOURIST SCAM!

I booked two nights on Agoda for 64 USD. The owner claims an exchange rate 50 percent higher than the current market rate, which is absurd and uninformed.

The official market rate is 2.100 kyats to 1 USD, the same rate I got from the ATM. The owner will only use her own arbitrary exchange rate of 3200 kyats to 1 USD. So 50 % higher! Which means the owner is asking me to pay 97 USD for my 64 USD booking!

I even called Agoda, Agoda confirms her behavior is not allowed, because according to their policy, she has to use official market exchange rates. The owner does not care about this information, we were discussing for hours.

I said I would only pay the official market rate, so I got thrown out after one night. The owner doesn't know how to listen, she keeps rambling nonstop, saying the same over and over. She uses the country's circumstances as her excuse, but no other hotel during my trip in Myanmar would make an arbitrary exchange rate or have this issue. The owner needs to put her exchange rate information clear on the booking platform so customers can choose to accept that rate.

I'm from Europe with no dollars and the owner charges a high fee on credit card payment(which also wasn't working that day), so my only choice was to pay in kyats. But of course I'm only willing to pay what my booking says.

She told us she had other travellers staying before, who would also complain about the exchange rate, but clearly the owner has not changed her behavior or at least put out information on booking platforms to inform about her exchange rate.

There are many other hotels in town, which use the official market exchange rate. Going somewhere else is my best...

Nestled at 1320m on the woody flanks of the Shan Plateau, Kalaw is a charming quiet hill resort, witness of past colonial times. Blue sky and warm sunbeams during the day and very chilled nights (we slept under two blankets). The all place is somehow surreal and this hotel has a chalet feel...||The bungalows and the rooms in the main building are all decorated of wood panel, like a swiss chalet. Our standard room, in the main house, was clean, very spacious and clear with three windows. ||Tip for choosing your room: prefer a deluxe one or the bungalow because they are more exposed to the sun and stay warm longer. Useful for the cold nights.||What is appreciate most is simple the shower. The strongest and hottest one of our all trip in Myanmar. A real joy!||The included breakfast is freshly prepared for you at the time you asked for. Fruits, eggs, toasts, butter, jam,... Perfect to start the day. This morning we even had avocados. Sooo good in this season. ||The staff and the manager are not speaking english very well but they do they very best and are very helpful.||The hotel is on a hill, a bit outside of downtown and a stroll away from its main streets. Ask for a map. They made their own which is very detailed. ||A highly recommended place to...

This hotel only has a few rooms in a large house. We were the only guests and it was ok, if a little odd. They had made an effort, and the staff were very eager to please, but the place still felt quite cheap (which it was not in terms of $). The wooden construction is not very sound proof (you can see outside through the slats) and although the road is not big or busy, you hear traffic noise at all hours - sometimes army trucks going up to the base. There were a lot of ants in the bathroom, which did not bother us unduly, but the bed was very uncomfortable - hard, with covers that did not fit the bed - not great when it is very cold. The spare blanket in the wardrobe smelt badly of moth balls. It is about a 20 min walk to town at night for dinner. This is fine but you need a torch as the hotel road is not lit at all. The staff tried their best at breakfast but I struggled to eat the poorly cooked eggs with sweet, sliced bread. There is not a lot of choice in Kalaw so this would suffice for a...

Hillock is a lovely place to stay. The houses are beautiful, and the gardens around are fantastic with so many lush and colourful flowers. The owner is a very kind and informative lady who seeks to look after her guests and make sure they are comfortable. There's a homely and relaxed feel about staying there. One of the highlights for sure is the breakfast. Make sure you get their fried tofu it is out of this world. I looked forward to the two mornings we had there. I highly recommend this place to anyone going to Kalaw. Thank you for some great memories.

I accidentally found this HOTEL very early in the morning when I drove to Kalaw. Around 3 or 4am, I was quite sleepy and didnt notice that much about beauty. When I woke up, omg.. breakfast area at sunrise are very superb and stunning. There are many pine woods around Villa and feel like it is somewhere in England. There is a fireplace in the room but didnt allow to make a fire just for a decoration. They provides free breakfast with choices (local or european). Staffs are helpful and so simple. Staying there, you will feel big sense of peace and nature.

I have been many times to Kalaw and I have stayed at different hotels but this is very first time staying at this wonderful Hillock Villa. I would give 10 out of 10 regardless of its fair price, good service, warm and kind staffing, comfy and safe environment, clean rooms, and plus a stable WiFi connection. I fully recommend the people who love to stay in the forest and for those who would like to get the real feelings of Kalaw with sound proof environment. Plus this is also environmental friendly and no plastic bags and with refill water bottles.
