Opononi Lighthouse Motel — Hotel in Kaikohe-Hokianga Community

Our stay was the first week in September 2024. We were fortunate to get a newly renovated unit (#4 I believe) and were told we were the second guests to stay there. Everything was clean and shiny and new and comfortable! Our criteria for accomodation on our trip was a room with a fridge so the microwave, stove top , toaster, french press in the kitchen along with all the flat/white ware was a great bonus. A beautiful selection of teas, coffees, and hot chocolate made for a cozy evening.

The rooms are beautifully designed and the beds were very comfortable and the linen beautiful.

The little porch with table and chair with a "sort of water view" was the perfect spot for our morning coffee and a wine at sunset.

Also a nice touch is the little book and games library.

We can appreciate the reasoning but it would have been nice to be able to make use of the spa with our two daughters. I think my only recommendation, would to perhaps partner with a local soap/lotion/shampoo retailer to add a nice "local" touch...

After check online when arriving in Opononi to see if there were vacancies at Lighthouse Motel we drove in at 3 pm to book in. Reception was closed with mobile number to call - OK, but no answer. As reception was part of Owners/Managers home walked around outside to see if someone was outside - Nobody there. Called mobile number again and was answered by a women who really couldn't care less about booking us in and said office would open at 5 pm. We are in our 70's, travelled over 200 kms but women was offhanded and quite rude. Why didn't they have a "No Vacancy" sign up if they didn't care about customers or wanted time off? It would have saved a lot of hassle - and then why didn't the woman apologise for not being able to let us in, and at least show interest, afterall they advertise office hours as 7.30 to 5 pm! - the place was pretty empty looking quite frankly. Very sad for the community as clearly these people don't realise that they are reliant on travellers staying and using other facilities,...

We were greeted with a warm friendly welcome(a young man)I enquired about a laundry area on the property,answer:Yes👏. Unit 12~our own spacious parking, barbeque area on our left, jacuzzi on our right, beautiful flower gardens,nice and quiet. Room-I expected to see 2 beds(only too realise I didn't even book a twin room😆)All good👍,All up for the room,dinette area kitchen facilities absolutely clean,bed very comfortable.Bathroom immaculate-also definitely love the Mirror Light.Beach straight across the road,few tasty eatery places,4 Square, dairy all very close by 👍.
