My wife and I took a self drive touring holiday on South Island New Zealand from the 17th March to the 11th April 2023. Apart from the first 2 nights and the last night where we stayed in a hotel in Christchurch we were self catering and stayed in accommodation that offered cooking facilities. I have reviewed each of the hotel/motels we stayed in. The following reviews cover the accommodation and some of the facilities/visits we made on the trip.|If you would like to view the rest of the reviews please click on my username and all my reviews will be listed.|Days 18 to 22 of our self drive tour of South Island March/April 2023|Abel Tasman Ocean View Chalets 5 stars|We stayed at the superb Abel Tasman Ocean View Chalets for 5 nights from the 1st to the 6th April. The view of the ocean from our chalet was excellent.|Welcome. We were given a warm welcome by Jared the co-owner and were given a bottle of milk. Jared gave us details of how to get to the Abel Tasman National Park and details of where to find some walks in the area.|Service. We asked to only have the room serviced once and it was done very well. We used the self service washing machine behind reception to wash the dirty laundry that had accumulated over the previous two weeks. |Location. The Abel Tasman Ocean View Chalets are located a few minutes walk from the main entrance to The National Park. We were able to walk from our chalet into the park and on to a path along the coast.|Comfort. The chalet was very comfortable and tastefully furnished. It consisted of a lounge area with a dining/breakfast table and chairs, a single bed, two easy chairs and a flat screen TV. The lounge area had windows on three sides giving a lot of light. It had a separate bedroom with a king size bed and a bathroom with an excellent shower. The bed linen was good quality and the towels were nice and fluffy. On the balcony there was a table and two chairs. The kitchenette had quite a lot of storage space for food and cooking equipment. There was a multipurpose oven/microwave with two electric plates combined in one unit. (See photo) When trying to cook a meal we found that you could not have the hobs and the microwave/conventional oven working at the same time. If you intend to do a lot of cooking you might be better off taking the larger Premium Chalet which has a full stove, dishwasher and fridge/freezer.|Cleanliness. The unit was very clean as was the bed linen.|WiFi. The Wifi was excellent. We had a very good signal and I was able to stream UK TV programmes using a VPN on my laptop.|Conclusions. The Abel Tasman Ocean View Chalets are an excellent place to stay. The view of the ocean from the chalets is really nice. It was very comfortable and an excellent location. This was one of the nicest places that...
Read moreWe stayed in an Ocean View Chalet in late February for 3 nights, midway through our month touring NZ, and it felt like a wonderful minibreak within the trip! I could happily have stayed a week, it really was an idyllic spot.|Our cabin was the 2nd one up the hill to the right from reception and it had a fantastic view over the bush to the sea beyond, with birds cheeping just outside the windows. The balcony was perfect for an evening drink and when it got cooler we could still enjoy the same stunning view from the lounge. The kitchen was well equipped and we came prepared, stocking up the Countdown supermarket in Motueka on route from Picton with ingredients for a pasta meal on our first night, and breakfast foods, which worked well. Over our dinner "in" we watched the moon come up over the ocean - just beautiful.|We saw other guests enjoying breakfast by reception but we weren't offered/didn't ask about the arrangements for this. There is only a very small shop in the village. For dinner on the other evenings we enjoyed huge burgers and wonderful kamara fries from Fat Tui (van with picnic tables between the Chalets and the park entrance) and also dined at Hooked restaurant in Marahou which was lovely.|The cabin had everything we needed and more (with little extras like kitchen roll and candles which we didn't find elsewhere, and a small oven under the 2 hotplates as well as separate microwave), felt nice and warm and cosy (it got the sun from early in the morning) and the bathroom had plentiful hot water and a decent shower, good for aching limbs after walking sections of the Abel Tasman track!|Reception can organise trips for you and we used them to book kayaks for one afternoon to row round to see Split Apple Rock, and to book the Ecotours boat trip along the coast, which picked us up from the end of the driveway (recommended against other operators like Wilsons as although its more pricey, it's a small boat and it can get into the channels that the mass tourism boats can't reach so you see more and the captain was a font of info too).|Highly recommend this accommodation and so wish it wasn't on the other side of the world, as would visit again...
Read moreI took a lot of photos but have been cleaning up my phones storage so will try and retrieve them as the ones I have here won’t do justice to the place. We rented a two-bedroom chalet and the place is truly a home away from home. It’s clean, tidy and it’s got everything we need on holiday. Chris is so nice and lovely. She waited for us to arrive and it was about 7ish so it was already dark and she guided us t the chalet. The view from our chalet In the morning was jaw-dropping. They have a dishwasher, a dining area, cutlery and crockery, cookware, clean oven, a min fridge and hot/cold shower, inverter, SkyTV and massive main toilet and bath plus the master’s bedroom comes with its own toilet and bath too although tiny but it’s well-thought of space. Wished we could have stayed longer, we were only there for 3 nights! I reckon next time we will stay there again. They are not too far away from the main Marahau village but if you’re staying in here be good to stock up on food as some shops could be closed and it’s a wee...
