Was hesitant about staying here, judging by some of the reviews proceeding. Not a heck of a lot of options in Haast, so I bit the bullet and booked a room. $102.00 for a King Room. Not bad. I arrived around 6pm, lovely receptionist gave me the keys, and solid directions to my room.
The room whilst small, was warm, and wasn't small enough to be claustrophobic. Certainly no bad smell here! The bed was two singles zipped together, thus making a large ridge in the middle of the bed. Despite this it was comfortable, and had good clean linen. I had dinner in the adjoining restaurant, and it was perfect. A delightful surprise! And not too badly priced either for a restaurant in the middle of nowhere!
The TV only had around 4 channels, but it had decent unlimited free WiFi. Shower was brilliant, with decent pressure.
The next day I ended up returning back to the Heartland Hotel to see if they had another room. The lady at reception did me a great discounted rate. This room was located in another wing of the complex and had a queen bed and a single bed in it. Room felt bigger then the previous nights. Shower in this room was pathetic, with a under half the pressure of the previous nights!
Worth noting that when I checked in on the first night, I asked after prices for breakfast for myself. So much easier to have it at the Hotel, instead of finding somewhere in Haast. I got told it was $48.00 for myself for breakfast! I repeated just to ascertain I had heard correctly. Indeed I had! Ah no thanks! No breakfast is that good, I went without.
Despite the niggles, and outrageous price for breakfast, I was really happy with my stay here, and will return in the future. Every staff member I came across was friendly and attentive. And the food was brilliant!
I think people don't quite realise that Haast is a small village, literally in the middle of nowhere. Do not come here if you are looking for the excitement and hustle and bustle. Do come though if you like a laid back atmosphere, with a remote feel. Haast is a destination in its own right, and is epic anytime of year, in...
Read moreA hotel with many rooms very well located just off State Highway 6 at Haast. Ideally located for exploring the area around - towards Fox Glacier, towards Wanaka and towards Jackson Bay.
Good rooms but the big surprise for me was that not all rooms have a mini-fridge. (These days, we almost take a mini-fridge for granted).
To be fair to the hotel: this is written on their website. (But if you want a king bed, you don’t get a mini-fridge, if I understand correctly). the staff were kind enough to allow us to keep one bottle of important stuff in the chillers in the bar, for the duration of our stay!
But, there is a mini-fridge at the end of the corridor where our room was, which we could have potentially used to store some other stuff from our chilly bin (Esky), but no one told us about it - perhaps they have a reason not to.
The bed was very comfortable. The water pressure in shower was excellent.
We could park our car right outside our room which was convenient.
Leaving aside the inconvenience of not having a mini fridge in either of our two rooms, our 3 night stay was a comfortable one. We had rooms 44-45, across the corridor...
Read moreOverall - Cheap but very average. I'm not sure why it's called a hotel, it's really a motor lodge. No microwave, mini fridge, couch or plates / bowels in the two bedroom family room. I think the mini fridge is communal in the hallway way. Only had Freeview TV. The wifi for our room was poor, could browse, but youtube or streaming wasn't possible without constant buffering. The king bed was two singles put together, not unusual, however the middle where they joined felt like a wooden plank. I'm not sure if the room was damp, or the bedsheets were not fully dry. Lying on or in the bed, it felt like someone had spent the night in it, sweating all night. The dinner at the bar was actually decent. We ordered safe options though. Kids prices are good. Overall it's somewhere cheap to stay, but the advertising makes it seem way better than what it is, really needs a major renovation and investment, however, that won't happen due to its reliance on tourist in a...
