We had the Beef Rib-Eye, Fish of the day, and the Buffalo Wings. The beef rib eye was ordered rare with the garlic butter, but came out more on the well done side with the mushroom sauce. However the steak was okay, until I added the mushroom sauce. The mushroom sauce is PHENOMENAL. Made the steak go from a 3 to a 10, I forgot it was too well done for my liking! The fish of the day was amazing, the breading held together with each bite, very crispy. We were a tad bit dissatisfied with only receiving one small lemon wedge, so maybe ask for some extra when you order at the counter. To comment on the chips, you definitely need a side of mushroom sauce for them, I swear that stuff goes with anything! The wings were good, but they had a bit of a microwave taste to them, the ranch is not very good, but I am from America and ranch is a pretty common well done condiment there. More than happy they tried to go for a ranch type dipping sauce, just didn’t nail it. Salad was great, more of a coleslaw taste, but very...

There are limited food options in Haast, but there has to be something better than the Frontier Cafe. A number of things from the limited dinner menu were not available. The seafood chowder was bland. Breakfast offerings were only the continental breakfast, which is priced well over ($25 NZ to $16 NZ) the stated price on the menu on their website . There was no fresh fruit (canned), the eggs were a very weird and gelatinous consistency and had a strange task, the only coffee offering was hot water and the same instant coffee crystal packets found in hotel rooms.

The place was rundown and dirty (dead flies in the window sills, ceiling tiles and curtains falling down).

This restaurant was our worst dining experience while visiting...

Better than I was expecting. This place is a country pub, so make sure you don't have luxury restaurant expectations. The food was decent. Took the safe option and ordered a frontier burger which was just as good as any other restaurant. The Kids options are well priced. While your there, grab a beer and play some pool. It could be a risk coming when it's very quiet, as the kitchen might not be operating at full potential. You can tell its one of those hit or miss places depending on the day. Food came in a timely manner. Stop in, as the place could probably benefit from more sales to pay for...

Stopped in for an early dinner with the menu holding more appeal for my wife (who doesn't eat red meat) than the other main eating option in town. The prices were ok at $50 + drinks, but the peas that came with the bangers and mash I had seemed under done and the chips with the chicken burger also needed more time in the fryer to colour up and heat through properly. It was a busy place tonight and there only seemed to be one in the kitchen so may have been a little full on to get the timings right.

We are 2 Aussies travelling from Auckland down to the very south, and I have to say, these have been the best meals on our journey so far. I had the creamy chicken breast and hubby had the rib eye, and both were tasty and full of flavour. The staff are lovely and the whole place is very warm and cosy on this cold rainy night. If you are looking for a healthy, home cooked style meal, definitely pop in and have a look at the menu.
