Though I've never actually stayed at Prince Hotel, I've had the pleasure of dining at Calypso Restaurant many times over the past 20 years. I've been coming here since I was a newly wed, and have very pleasant memories of Kano's most enduring restaurant. Service at Calypso is always 'cool, calm and collected'! Staff are polite, kind and very professional, not to mention very neatly dressed in formal attire. Ambience has always been lovely; seemingly for a mature crowd and a place where you will seldom encounter noise and unrulines. The decoration has changed over the years, yet the decor always exudes class, grace and finesse. There's a nice bar area and a beautiful aquarium. Tables are impeccably laid and toilets are excruciatingly clean! ||I've mostly had lunch at Calypso, with my entire family in tow. They have a decent selection of local, and intercontinental dishes, (with a big focus on Lebanese cuisine). Prices are a bit steep at Calypso, but the fixed prices for breakfast are a good deal. The food always tasted delicious, (some dishes more so than others). At times, their food lacks flavor or seasining. This time we went there in the morning- a party of 5. Only breakfast was available, (as a set menu), with 4 options on offer. We ordered the Calypso Breakfast, which includes Seasonal Fruit Segments or Fresh Orange Juice, 2 Eggs done to your taste served with Kidney Sauce, Fried Plantain and French Fries, Toast served with Butter & Jam, and a choice of Tea or Coffee. We also got the Arabic Breakfast, which is a choice of Seasonal Fruit Segments or Orange Juice as well, Foul Moudames served with Mozzarella Cheese, Labneh with Olive Oil, Fresh Vegetables & Pickles with Arabic Bread, and choice of Tea or Coffee. We also ordered the English Breakfast. This came with the same Seasonal Fruit or Juice option, choice between Cereal or Porridge, 2 Eggs cooked how you like, served with Chicken Sausages, Baked Beans and Kidney Sauce, and the Toast with Butter and Jam, plus the Tea or Coffee option. We substituted the Kidney Sauce for French Fries. ||Everything tasted good and was presented very elegantly. I did however feel a bit cheated/short-changed when my Arabic Breakfast was served without the Labneh. I'm sure they didn't have it, but at least the waiter should have mentioned it to me, if not for anything, but out of pure courtesy. After all, it was listed as part of the set menu, so it should have been included. I just decided to let it go and not say anything about this. The breakfast was rich, tasty, filling, and satisfying. We really enjoyed every yummy morsel. I just wished they would include water in these set menus, because nothing 'washes down' a hale and hearty breakfast like a good gulp of H20! Calypso Restaurant has stood the test of time, and is one of the best restaurants in Kano as far as I'm concerned. I will continue to dine here as much as I can because everything is remarkably organised, well maintained and smoothly run. I highly, highly recommend Calypso...
Read moreThe hotel is in a very quiet location and has a beautiful gym and swimming pool. The hotel staff is very helpful, and the stay itself was very good. However, I did have a problem at check-out, as I had to leave the hotel, and the staff were not very friendly and helpful. I had booked this hotel through trip.com and paid for four nights' accommodation and breakfast in advance. However, when I checked out, the front desk staff charged me for an additional night and breakfast for four days, as I had only paid for three nights, and breakfast was not included. When I showed them the booking confirmation produced by Trip.com, they said it was invalid as it was not issued by their hotel.I stayed with a Nigerian friend, so he negotiated with the manager to check again. The manager then tried to claim again that I had paid for four nights' accommodation but that breakfast was not included. I had no choice as my flight was almost ready and I left the hotel having paid about $50 for breakfast for the four nights. In the reviews I saw when booking this hotel on Trip.com, some people, like me, paid for their stay in full in advance but were told to pay again at check-out as they had not paid. This person eventually paid again in full. I was concerned about it, and the same thing happened to me.If you book this hotel, I would not recommend paying in advance.Apart from this, my stay at this hotel...
Read moreThe rooms are spacious and calm, the internet works fine and the place is clean. Except for the bathroom. The staff is friendly and accommodating EXCEPT the guys at the reception. Very rude and unfriendly. Everything comes with an extra price, is a hassle and they won't simply help. I asked for an ironing board and an iron - a common thing every better hotel provides automatically in every room - impossible to get at the Prince! They won't simply help and even make you look stupid that you ask for one. The internet is not included in the room. You have to buy internet seperately for EVERY device! So you pay for 3 codes if you have 3 devices! Redicuous! Also, breakfast is not included and you have to choose from a menu. There is no small buffet like everywhere else. So I would think twice before booking...
