The hotel is large and centrally located. My room was in the older un-refurbished part of the hotel. However it was still mostly fine for my needs. The bathroom was a good size and the beds very comfortable, as well as a good quality TV and Tea/Coffee making facilities. The downsides are the lighting and the complete lack of storage. There is no ceiling light, the only light is from desk top lamps and one floor standing lamp which are quite dim. The other issue was the complete lack of storage in the room. No wardrobe, no drawers (not a single one, anywhere in the room) nothing. The only "storage" is 4 hooks beside the door with coat hangers. Nowhere to put valulables like a passport either or your worn clothes. I hope this will be rectified as part of the refurbishment. The rooms also aren't serviced daily unless you ask, although this isn't a major problem.||Also there is some noise from the road if you get a room at the front but worse on one night here there was some sort of event going on in the park opposite with music so loud it was making the windows of the hotel vibrate. I guess not the hotels fault, but the downside of the central location. The bus from the airport stops outside and there is also a shopping centre with a large car park next door too.||The breakfast is very good, with a good choice of hot food (fried eggs, bacon etc) and on weekdays starts quite early, at 6:30am. The hotel resturant/pub was also good with a nice cosy atmosphere and decor and the food was good here too. I believe there is also another restuarant on the top floor, but I didn't...
Read moreMy stay at the Grand Royal hotel in Narvik was a captivating experience, given its rich historical significance. The hotel's past, involving occupations by both the British and Nazis, as well as Churchill's stay in 1940, added a layer of intrigue to my visit.
During our time there, we were fortunate to stay in the original section of the building, which emanated a charming old-world ambiance. The rooms in this part of the hotel were cozy, though slightly smaller in size.
The hotel staff were not only welcoming and hospitable, but also contributed to the warm and inviting atmosphere. Moreover, the hotel's prime location offered convenient access to various attractions, all within a short walking distance, making our exploration of the town all the more enjoyable.
It's worth noting that our room allocation appeared to be associated with the type of booking we had. Guests availing of student discounts or summer passes might find themselves placed in comparatively smaller rooms on lower floors.
One notable highlight of our stay was the early check-out at 4 am. Despite the inconvenience of the hour, the hotel thoughtfully provided a small breakfast-to-go bag, a thoughtful gesture that added a pleasant touch to our departure.
In conclusion, the Grand Royal hotel not only offers a window into history but also provides snug accommodations with a nostalgic charm, alongside a friendly staff. Its central location elevates the overall experience, making it an ideal choice for those looking to immerse themselves in Narvik's...
Read moreWe were booked into this hotel by a tour company - which is probably the case for most guests, because of its central location in Narvik and reasonable price. If you look back at reviews, it has apparently been undergoing renovation work for at least seven years - and it is far from finished yet. The reception looked like a building site - and the staff seemed to think there was nothing wrong with this. There are rooms which have already been renovated, and ones which have not. We saw both, and decided to pay the 400NOK to upgrade, mainly based on the nicer bathroom. In both cases rooms are adequate, but neither has a fridge/mini bar or a safe. The restaurant was only open three days a week, and the pub was very busy. The breakfast buffet was very good. If you are going to stay in Narvik (other than skiing, I can't think of any particular reason to do so), I'd suggest you make restaurant reservations in advance for whatever happens to be open at a convenient time - many places are closed on Sundays, many do not open anyday until 3pm which is late for lunch, and many close quite early. There was one receptionist at the hotel who was friendly, helpful and efficient - but we neglected to get her name. Others seemed quite indifferent - but service in Norway as a whole was friendly but not of a high standard in terms of speed...
