The Grand Hotel is the largest building in Andalsnes (or tied with one other one), yet we had some trouble finding it after we disembarked from the incredible Rauma railway. Quite a bit of uphill walking with our carry-on bags that luckily have good wheels, and we had to ask locals to point us to the right streets for reaching hotel. Once found, a very nice lady checked us in and gave us a third floor room facing the back, as I always request this for a quiet room. To our dismay, it still wasn’t that quiet since the walls are paper thin and neighboring guests can be heard. Doors closing hard was common too. The room was snug as well, but we were fine with it as it was just for overnight. ||The breakfast buffet had plenty of selection, but my wife noticed flies landing on some food, so she suggests using prongs the take food from underneath that flies can’t reach. After breakfast, we took the wonderful gondola to the great overlook of the town and surrounding landscape. Wow, incredible views, even with overcast skies obscuring the peaks of the mountains in view. The nice front desk lady helped store our bags while visiting the gondola, and we walked back up the hill to pick them up afterwards. All in all, it’s a decent facility with some issues that can’t be resolved in terms of the way rooms and halls are built, but if only a short stay, it’s fine and the...
Read moreI stayed here for two nights on my way to the Western fjords. The room was a nice size with all the usual amenities. The tv includes streaming services and one English language channel. The WiFi was good and the plugs were convenient. The bath includes a shower with movable walls, which seemed like a good use of space. The hotel location overlooks the fjord and you’re surrounded by mountains. I don’t know why there are so many comments about the exterior of the hotel which I thought was attractive (and functional—there is outdoor seating). The restaurant is quite good, with a large breakfast buffet and a dinner service. They prefer reservations for dinner, esp. when they are full as was the case on my second night. The restaurant prices were reasonable and about the same as the places in town. Bar service is available all day. The main parking is across the street, but I think you have to pay for the overflow parking which may be owned by someone else. The hotel is walking distance from the train and the area used by buses. It’s also close to the aerial cable car on the mountain and...
Read moreI didn’t love this hotel. Room size and bedding were fine but shower design was awful. It has two doors that BOTH open so you don’t get a perfect seal and floods the entire bathroom with every shower. I’ve never seen such awful shower design in any hotel. It’s despicable.
I accidentally left an expensive camera lens behind and they didn’t even bother to email me to let me know about it. That’s basic courtesy. I had to email them to ask about it.
Restaurant is understaffed. Takes a while to get service because there aren’t enough waiters. Food is decent. In this town, dining options are quit limited.
Gym is fully equipped, which is one of the positives but items are all over the floor, not cleaned up end of day. But you can get a decent workout in.
Service with reception was decent but mediocre. Service at the restaurant for dinner was great. Even though they were understaffed, the waitresses were great.
I didn’t enjoy...
