EI Faro del Colibri — Hotel in Bocas del Toro

AVOID THIS PLACE!!! Unfortunately we didn't read the reviews on Tripadvisor, so do that! The owner and the housekeeping woman send actually the POLICE to us!!?! At 10am they knocked on our door. Our crime was that we have dared to complain about not having internet for 5 days although it was included in the high price (550$!!!) we had paid. The staff always said it's our phone's failure. But the internet didn't work for the neighbors neather. In the last morning we simply wanted to talk with the owner, who we saw just on the first day. The owner offered us an extra night for 80$!! Which was of course not an option. When we refused it he simply put down the phone and it was not anymore possible for us to talk with him because the housekeeping lady denied to call him again or give us his number. Instead she called the police! We were totally shocked. The police first thought that we don't want to pay for the accomodation, although it was the first thing we had to do upon arrival without even seeing our room. When we showed them the creditcard receipt and explained them the situation they didn't understand why they were called. They thought maybe we don't want to leave the room, although it was 10am, one hour before the check out and we were just packing our luggage. We have video and photo documentation about the whole scenery!! It was very humiliating for us to be on our vacation for so much money in a situation where we have to face to weaponed policemen like criminals!

Furthermore.. next to this place are passing all the time the motorboats, it's like sitting next no the motorboat highway. It lasts until late night and starts early in the morning. The water in front of your house reaches your pants. If you want to swim further away expect your head is cut down by one of this boats.

You also have a construction next to the property so don't forget your earplugs.

The reception is usually abandoned, but anyway, you can communicate just in Spanish, if the housekeeping lady is willing to understand you at all.

The place is VERY OVERPRICED!!! The owner is very sloan and rapacious and he shrinks from nothing (as also the reviews at Tripadvisor testify)!!

This place is the simply amazing! I don’t mean to be disrespectful but you’d have to be out of your mind if you think you can find a better value! It really is a private air conditioned overwater bungalow, is clean, has free delicious breakfast, laundry service for only $14, just a short $1 convenient boat taxi ride from Bocas town, and the water is crystal clear and full of marine life and all for that low price!!! Let that sink in for a minute... Ok. Is it perfect? No place is perfect but at these prices the return on investment it Unbeatable period! That is why I give it 5 stars! I’d even give it 6 stars if Google would let me. The owner and staff are some of the nicest people ever. The restaurant cooked us up the best lobster dinner ever; order the lobster in garlic (a la ajo). It really only cost $1 per person during the day ($1.50 per person after 5pm) to caught any passing boat for a 5 minutes ride to Bocas town to go on tours, buy groceries, souvenirs, etc. So it has all the conveniences of Bocas town with the exclusivity of staying on a private overwater bungalow just a short water taxi away. Everyday and night we relaxed on our deck and watched the sun rise/set, snorkel around our bungalow, at a simple but delicious breakfast, relaxed while watched boats ride by. People on here complained about the boat traffic but we found watching the boats ride by relaxing and listening to the wakes (waves) they made actually helped us sleep better due to the sound. We saw reviews about sand flees so we came prepared with 4 different bug sprays and a citronella diffuser but even when we’d forget to use that stuff we still never got bit or saw any bugs whatsoever. So that was overblown but it’s better to be safe then sorry and come prepared anytime you travel. Awful! Our honeymoon after getting married last Saturday. We were checking in and they didn’t have our reservation ready, they wanted us to pay again, we call Expedia and figured out they had our payment already, we go to our room to take a shower and the shower head was falling apart and had a string holding it up, then we got to the bed and there was a small beetle on the bed so we looked at the bed frame to see if there was more and there was lizard poop on the bed frame with what looked like, cockroach eggs or termite eggs next to it. We went to the front desk and they came to room to investigate and told us it’s no problem and said we could get a different room however after seeing that on the BED we told them we do not want another room. They actually got mad at US! We left and called Expedia immediately and told them the situation and Expedia called the hotel and they actually hung up the phone on Expedia, Expedia called again and they said they will not give us a refund for either day because we used the shower. My wife called the hotel to try to get them to give us a refund and they hung up the phone on her. After that we are unable to get a refund for our almost $300 20 minute stay at this hotel. Awful service and even more awful cleanliness. Good location though but so many places in bocas del toro. We’ve been here many times.
