When traveling we are sometimes gifted with special encounters that can’t be found in guide books or museums. Our four days in the Sacred Valley (between Cusco and Machu Picchu Peru) was spent at Pedregal Ecolodge, located about half a kilometer’s walk (or extremely bumpy ride) up a small canyon. The owner, a single mother, had grown up in the area but her family was forced to leave in the 80’s when the Shining Path made life too dangerous. 10 years ago she returned to build a new homestead. Her vision is a compound that houses a local elementary school and a simple hotel for tourists. I came to Pedregal Ecolodge after a traumatic event and was able to stay a few weeks in her beautiful lodge. Pictures, words, nothing will do the location justice. I really enjoyed Teresa's cooking, she is very vegetarian and vegan-friendly and makes some epic meals with fresh ingredients from her garden and local markets.
