We come to Peru every year to visit family in Trujillo. This trip required an overnight stay in Lima for an anniversary celebration. We actually had a reservation at a beautiful, condo in San Isidro but unfortunately when we landed in Lima, we found out our original reservation was cancelled due to a water main break in the area so we had to quickly find a place that could accommodate 4 people with 3 rooms and close to the location of the anniversary celebration. I typically do a lot of research before picking a place to stay as many hotels in Peru can be substandard. We found the Montreal Magdalena Hotel with a quick Google search and booked based on necessity, not at all where we actually wanted to stay. Upon arrival, the hotel check-in was efficient and the front reception was friendly. There is no elevator to the rooms so if you are traveling with big luggage, please ask the front desk to bring your luggage to your room if higher than the second floor. The restaurant is decorated nicely and we had lunch upon arrival. The food was good and service was adequate for Peru. The hotel rooms themselves are the reason I typically like to research things before choosing where to stay because many hotels do not have any type of soundproofing and are very hollow (echoey) due to tile flooring, concrete walls and single pane windows without any encasement that do not close all the way. (Normal in Peru) This hotel was exactly that. The room was “basic” (2nd floor) but you hear everything from the lobby, to people walking down the halls (upstairs and downstairs), to the surrounding rooms, (toilets flushing, people showering and snoring) to car alarms going off all hours of the night/morning, to pigeons on the roof, to planes flying overhead to music being played. The bed was hard (like sleeping on a 2x4). The pillow was hard foam but better than what you typically are offered in in the lower quality Peru hotels. There is also no heat or air conditioning so depending upon what season you stay you will either be cold or hot. There is a fan if it’s in the summer. It’s currently winter in Peru so it was cold sleeping. There was an extra blanket in the cubby/closet that helped but the bedding is standard sheet with a slightly thicker sheet on top. Had it not been for the extra blanket, we would have been freezing. There is hot water but please be careful when showering, all the floors are incredibly slippery tile (again, typical of Peru) and if you step out of the shower wet, you could seriously hurt yourself trying to walk around the room. Have slippers or flip flops. Overall, this hotel is not the type of hotel I would choose to stay at but again this was out of necessity so if you need a place to stay quickly in an area with not many options, this is an cheap/ok choice but otherwise, this is not a place to stay for more than one night. Lastly, if you do have to stay here, request a room away from the main street in a small attempt to limit some of the noise but there is no place where it will be completely quiet. Hotel is considered 4 stars for Peru but outside of Peru...
Read moreCalled they quoted me 120 soles for a matrimonial room . I got there 10 min later and almost proceeded to speak to me in English when I spoke Spanish and asked if they had rooms available. I did not mention I called. They said they only had 1 room available and it was with jacuzzi and was 240 soles double the price . I told them I had called and was told 120. She yelled over at another lady and told her what I said then they suddenly had a room available. Mind you at the enterance was a sign that read promo matrimonial room 100 soles. And at the check in desk the prices stated 110 soles for a matrimonial room. I feel like they were giving me the run around and just wanted to get more money out of me. I walked out and got an Airbnb for $35...
Read moreThis hotel is practical if you are looking for a no frills place that is relatively close to the beach and away from the center of Lima. The location is near the Magdalena Market, where they sell good fruit. Staff is friendly and breakfast is suitable. The are two main drawbacks to the property. ||1-You can hear everything, including street traffic quite clearly.||2-In winter (July-August) the hotel gets very humid and cold due to the proximity to water.||3-It is nowhere close to the main tourist places in Lima||4-Public Transport isn't great in this neighborhood. You will have...
