We had a very enjoyable stay in Sao Martinho do Porto at the St Antonio da Baia Hotel which is a simple two star family run hotel so don’t expect international services and facilities but it provided all the basics. ||||Our room was clean, quiet and spacious, with a reasonably sized en-suite with shower, bath, bidet and WC. The shower was in the bath so you had to step over into it to have a shower. A number of the rooms have a balcony or terrace, in our case quite a big space with a plastic table and chairs. Our beds were comfortable and the water ran hot whenever we wanted it. The room had a phone. ||||There is no air-conditioning, which is normal for a lot of hotels here as there is usually a breeze from the sea. As it was never too hot when we were there, I don’t know if fans would have been made available. ||||The staff were very welcoming and friendly and there was always someone on hand who could speak English. ||||Breakfast was as good as you’d get in more prestigious hotels; maybe not quite the range but the quality of fresh fruit, local ham and cheese and patisseries was excellent. There is no restaurant for lunch or dinner.||||Apart from the bar, which was a bit gloomy, the public areas were bright and airy and nicely presented. There is a lift. ||||There is parking on site for about 6 or 7 vehicles, but there were also on-street free spaces close by.||||The hotel is located in a quiet area of Sao Martinho, some distance from the beach. A brisk walk gets you there in less than 10 minutes, but it’s more of a 15 minute stroll. Coming back is slightly uphill but there is an elevator near the sea front which cuts out some of the climbing.||||Although most of the cafes and restaurants are at the sea front, there are a couple of local cafes and one restaurant less than five minutes walk away; it serves hearty Portuguese food.||||San Martinho is a lovely resort, ideal for families with young children. A huge sandy beach in a bay safe from the Atlantic breakers has space for everyone though it is much busier at the weekends. There are restaurants and cafes to suit all tastes and wallets and there was no evidence of rowdy behaviour of any sort.||||Some 70 miles north of Lisbon it is within easy reach by car of spectacular Atlantic scenery and beautiful and important historical attractions.||||This is a 2 star hotel and as such it provided good value for money. I am not criticising it for the following, merely warning potential guests that: the TV reception was poor, our room could have done with a little more storage space and a desk, our ensuite facilities didn’t match ( but worked ), the terrace furniture was basic and there was no parasol. ||||We would return...
Read moreBooked this little gem in Sao Martinho do Porto, a place where I spent a few years when I was teenager...I hadn't visited S. Martinho in 12 years so it was decided that I would spend a few days with a friend and relive some old memories...||I started by checking somewhere where affordability and location were a must! We did not intend to spend our time at the hotel, other than for sleeping and showering, so nothing too fancy was ever in the cards...I came across this hotel as it offered the best price for what we were looking for. We couldn't have asked for anything better! The hotel offered everything we needed from a nice comfortable and quiet room to the everyday friendly disposition from their staff. The breakfast was included, this was pretty satisfactory to us...I suppose if you are looking for bacon and eggs, you may not find this to be suitable but we certainly did not complain! ||The hotel is local and close to all amenities...S. Martinho is not a big place so walking around the village is no chore, plus the beach and the views are breath-taking...it is no wonder I was in love with this place when I lived there! ||My friend and I recommend this hotel if you are looking to spend time walking and enjoying the village and other towns around. Great value, great night sleep and great staff! Can't beat that!...

Our room was not over large but perfectly clean and the bathroom fully equipped and in good working order. Very little storage space for clothes but that disadvantage was outweighed by the hotel's strongest points, its helpful staff and its outstandingly good breakfast buffet - superior to that in many a luxury hotel. Coffee, from a machine, was a little weak but that was remedied by the addition of a shot of espresso! The front desk was manned, during our three night stay, by a very friendly and helpful young man who gave us loads of excellent advice about the locality, restaurants etc. The hotel is a gentle ten or fifteen minutes walk from the beach if you use the free elevator to the tourist information office but beware, the lift closes at 9pm so you have a steep climb back if you're later. We liked São Martinho very much and will certainly use this hotel when we...
