We stayed at this hotel for a few days while visiting the beautiful Brasov. The hotel is located in a safe neighborhood of the old industrial and residential district called Astra. Calea Bucuresti stretches all the way to the city's new civic Center, it's a nice walk. Alternatively, you can hike over the hill Dealul Melcilor to reach the Center. To go to the old historic downtown, you can get a cab for just $2 or $3. We didn't buy breakfast, I can't comment on that, but the rest was quite satisfying for a 3 star holtel. Price was very affordable too. All we needed was a comfy bed and a shower and Gema delivered. The style of this hotel resembles a classic villa with red carpets, classic paintings... perhaps a little outdated for our taste but didn't bother us at all. The room we had was small, just enough for 2 persons. Housekeeping did a good job cleaning. We had clean towels, bed sheets were clean - a lot better than most of the 3 star hotels we've been to back in US. Not much of a view from the balcony, but the street is relatively quiet and relaxing to watch. Windows were new and very well insulating. No AC - as expected with most houses in Romania, but most of the time you won't need it on. Bathroom was ok, nothing special... a little outdated but it provided everything you need. There's a fridge in the room but it's packed with drinks that are charged against your account. Prices were reasonable. No coffee maker. The staff is very discrete, genuinely smiling and very helpful. We asked for a hair dryer and they gave us one immediately. Rooms are locked with a regular key (no magnetic cards), so for safety we always left the key at the receptionist.|When should you consider this hotel? When you just need a place to rest, clean and cheap, no frills. When you're just passing by or you have business in the area.|When should you not? When you want to experience the best of Brasov with a nice view from your window and be close to historical center. When you travel with more people or with kids or if you are a key part of a wedding party.||Overall, not bad. If you're considering it,...
Read moreAfter our villa accommodation fell through the day before travelling to Brasov for New Year, our party of 6 was relieved to find availability at Hotel Gema, when all other places were full. This did lead us to be suspicious of the quality of the hotel, but we needn't have worried.||||We arrived late at night, much later than expected due to travel delays but had been contacted several times by the hotel to be kept up to date. The staff were incredibly welcoming, and continued to treat us exceptionally well all through our 6 night stay. Always service with a smile, happy to make suggestions of places to travel or order reliable taxis for our party.||||The rooms were clean, reasonably sized and functional. The walls and ceilings are quite thin, but we didn't have any problems with noise at night or in the mornings.||||Breakfast consisted of trays of cheese, ham, eggs and salad, along with baskets of bread and dishes of jam, prepared specially for each group.||||There wasn't much (apart from a supermarket) in the immediate vicinity of the hotel, but it was only a few km from the centre - around 10 minute taxi ride costing 8 Lei (around £1.50), so fairly convenient.||||We really enjoyed our week and I'd definitely...
Read moreThree stars.||That's what they advertise on the building above their name. My question is: who hands out these stars?!||Our stay was very brief, fortunately. ||Even though the hotel has a very clean appearance, just staying at it makes you feel dirty. The carpet is the worst (pictured below)! I don't care about the color, but it's sticky. As if it hasn't been cleaned in years! My white socks turned red after walking on it for an hour. I had to throw them away!||The hotel doesn't provide you with basic amenities. No iron, blow dryer and half a roll of toilet paper, no back ups!||Needless to say, return...
