I’ve stayed in many hostels over the years and around the world, but this is the first time I’ve experienced something like this—I got scammed. Clearly. For three nights, I ended up paying nearly 6,500 rubles, and let me tell you, it wasn’t worth that price. I had already paid online for the booking. Exhausted from my trip, I agreed to pay extra for an early check-in and a bed sheet.
When my card didn’t work, I paid in cash, and she promised to give me the change. Maybe I’m too naive to think most people are honest, but I’m still waiting for my change. I asked her several times, and she always found a reason to postpone it. On my last night, she left without giving me the cash but promised to come early the next morning. Of course, she never showed up.
This left a bitter taste about Irkutsk at the end of my trip. I left without money, without dinner, or anything to eat the next day because I couldn’t make it to the grocery store. I hope at least they put the money they dared to take from a solo female traveler—already struggling as a foreigner—to some use. They should be ashamed...
