My husband and I recently went on the trip of a lifetime to South Africa, starting in Johannesburg and ending in Cape Town, with a Kruger National Park Safari in the middle. Staying at Golfer's Lodge was such a lovely beginning to our adventure. Hostess/Proprietor Luiza da Silva couldn't have been more welcoming. She personally showed us our room, which was clean, comfortable, equipped with a little kitchenette, a very nice bathroom with a walk-in shower, and even had a private patio. There were welcoming foods & snacks (e.g., fruit, cereal, milk, bread, yogurt, jam, chocolates), and even a decanter with some South African sherry. (Now that was a treat, indeed!)|Alex, (I hope I am remembering his name correctly), the all-round helper/handyman/porter/gardener was quietly cheerful and helpful, magically appearing whenever you needed a hand with your suitcase or anything else.|Johannesburg, like many cities, has crime issues however Golfer's Lodge is located in a very nice neighborhood, completely walled in with security gates (like most places in the area). We felt totally safe and easily took Ubers when going out to dinner. Our room key ring also included a fob for the security gates. Luiza was able to give us some great dinner recommendations (Fahrenheit restaurant if you are feeling carnivorous, and O Peri Peri if you'd like to dive into casual South African-Portuguese cuisine).|The lodge's gardens are spacious and beautiful. It was too cold for us to use during our visit, but there is a very nice swimming pool and a covered lapa (veranda) overlooking it. There's even a small putting green if you are so inclined.|Breakfast was included in our room rate and Luiza cooked it to order. FYI, her poached eggs are a thing of beauty. She also had an espresso machine (operated only by her, mind you) that produced an amazing cappuccino. Self service tea and coffee (as well as yogurts, cereals, toasts, muffins) were available on her breakfast bar in addition to a cooked breakfast.|The da Silvas may be handing over the reins in the near future, as they look to take some time for themselves. If you can book Golfer's while Luiza is still acting as hostess, you'll be in for a treat with this, warm, welcoming, friendly, and vivacious lady. I'm sure, should she step down, she'll ensure that whoever takes over is top-notch. In the meantime, book this lovely B&B style lodge. You...
Read moreThis Guest House will not disappoint. I would love to stay there again, (the other 8 people in our group would agree). We spent well over 2 months as guest's at the Golfer's Lodge. Well appointed rooms, great host's, and care takers. We were very well cared for, and could not have been treated any better. The garden alone is worth the visit, go put your feet up pool side and enjoy the lovely grounds and watch the birds. Stroll around the lawn and find the little things here and there that make a garden special. Few places are as serene in the city. Would I stay there...
