Khuvena Guesthouse — Hotel in Gauteng

I booked a room at this guesthouse through Booking.com based on the photos and reviews from other travelers.||||This was the worst mistake I could ever make. The photos must've been taken 10 years ago and the reviews aren't dated so I can only assume they were written many years ago too as both the photos and the reviews were almost the complete opposite of what we experienced.||||We arrived at around 11am at the guesthouse as we had pre-arranged an early check-in but the lady who "checked us in" was dressed rather shabbily as if she'd just woken up and could hardly speak or understand English and didn't seem to be expecting us.||||The room was dusty and rundown and didn't look like it had been unused for many years. The sheets looked old and worn with cigarette burns on them and we were not sure if they had ever been changed. The shower still had an old used bar of soap and the remains of someone else's shower gel. The bath had a crack in it and was dusty and a few dead insects in it. The couch was dirty and had a huge dent in it.||||The power was out for most of the day and although there was a generator at the guesthouse, only after I complained at 6pm, did they send someone to buy petrol for the generator. By that time it was already cold and dark and we had been in sitting without power since we checked in at 11am.||||I called Booking.com to complain, the number which is routed to a call centre in Asia and although the agent was sympathetic, he seemed unable to do anything to rectify the situation. He did say I should send a complaint by email attaching photos showing the issues. I did but didn't receive any feedback until much later the next day..||||At around 9pm that night the lady that checked us in knocked on our door asking for "cash" but I refused to give her any money as we had already made a prepayment to Booking.com. But I found this quite annoying and very unprofessional.||||We were meant to stay for 3 days but as it was too late to find alternative accommodation at such short notice, we stayed one night and left very early the next morning. Incidentally I found a much, much better Airbnb place not much further away in a nicer area and at half the price.||||So do yourself a favour and steer clear of...

Really great place. It is great value for money. In a very nice neighbourhood, close to all amenities. The room was very big. They were so accommodating that our 2 dogs were allowed to stay with us....
