TLDR: good site for visiting the area, peaceful enough for us, good access to public transport and to the city
We stayed four nights in late August. Our satnav brought us in a very strange way to avoid some congestion, but this site is actually very accessible via the M8 and A90.
Arrival is the usual slick procedure and the staff were extremely helpful and talkative. We had a quick drive round then chose a pitch not too far from the entrance. No problem with the pitch, one of the most level ones I have set up on. Lots of woodland and hedges around the site gave us lots of birdsong and our birdfeeder did brisk business. The facilities are fine - all spotless and well maintained, and more than enough water points etc for the number of people on site for this is indeed a large site. You don't feel it's big until you cound the pitches on the map, it's the clever use of woodland to divide the site up that makes you think you're on a CL site!
We came with the intention of visiting Edinburgh, and seeing Britannia. The bus stop is half a mile away. Services are frequent, and the bus company's app makes chosing your bus nice and easy. The standard £2 fare makes this a really attractive option, plus if you go on the top deck, you get to see a lot of the city as you travel. The footpath from the site is nice and wide, but if you're coming back at night, you'll need a bit of light as it's unilluminated. We took the tram from Leith into the city centre, and enjoyed a great day out. The returning bus stops for a ten minute break at the terminus at Silverknowe so we walked the extra 0.4 of a mile back to the site instead of waiting for it to resume service.
The next day we drove to see the Falkirk Wheel and the Kelpies; there's a massive Tesco in Falkirk to top up your supplies and refuel your vehicle.
More local to the site, the Toby Carvery at Lauriston Farm is easily walkable, and does reasonably priced food, and also does an all you can eat breakfast. It's five minutes to drive. If you do walk out, get down on the promenade by the golf club. Great views across the Firth of Forth, and up to the famous bridges.
Yes, there are public football pitches on the southern edge of the site and on Saturday and Sunday mornings, there was a bit of shouting while the game was on. Maybe avoid that side of the site if you can't cope with this. The approach path to Edinburgh airport runs about a mile to the north of the site, but it's just background noise, and I only heard one flight during the hours of darkness. It's not a problem for us.
Unsurprisingly, being on the edge of the city means you are next to the suburbs. There's currently house building work on the road that leads to the site; eventually the work will be completed and the builders will be gone. The nearby flats and estate are very normal looking places, and some have been jazzed up quite prettily with...

Cracking site, smooth efficient check in and welcome. This site really is good for location, style of site, and interesting features. Close by is the magnificent Silverknowes beach area with views along the Firth of Forth. The nearest local Supermarket is Morrisons and if you travel past this towards the British gas building and then turn right in front of it you will travel eastwards along the seashore through new trendy appartment accomodation, past delightful harbours and yacht clubs right into the heart of Leith and Ocen Drive (Royal Yacht Britannia). Travel westwards from the site towards the 3 Forth Bridges and you pass via South Queensferry and it's delights of scenery, eateries, and quaint shops. South from the site is Edinburgh itself and that is simply a must do during a stay at the site. Leave the car on site or walk half a mile to catch the frequent buses or miss the walking and use the mini bus service Graham provides which is much like a shared taxi service running every half hour and includes excellent commentary on the sights you pass. The style of site is more like individual little hedged areas hiding spacious pitches. No complaints from myself about any road noise from outside the site as its really is minimal. The aircraft do fly in down the Firth and you can see and hear them from the site but they are certainly not intrusive rather more and interesting feature if you have the flight tracker app and look up the exotic places they are coming in from. Failities on the site are excellent and the showers were lovely and hot , cleaned regularly to a high standard. Top trips out include the castle and Edinburgh City Tour by hop on hop off bus, any NTS like house of Binns, Gladstones Land , Historic Scotland Blackness Castle, Craigmillar Castle. Queensferry Forth Bridges and Leith worth a visit and of course the Royal Yacht. Superb time soon to be revisited when the christmas markets start. Well...
Read moreLovely large caravan site with brilliant amenities blocks.. Probably the best of the many sites ive stayed on with the club. Large pitches. So large fact that I'd gone out for afternoon and when l came back a german campervan was setting themselves up on my pitch. Haha... Ive heard about the beach towels on sunbeds but that takes the biscuit. I politely explained that all of the hardstanding area was in fact my pitch... See photo.
Only downside is this summer the second amenities block is closed for upgrade refurbishment, so if possible select a pitch to the right hand side on entering the site barrier gates. I was lucky as a pitch directly opposite the amenities block had just been vacated so I had 20 paces to walk for water, toilets showers, laundry etc etc. Brilliant.
The bus services into city are excellent.. I recommend using the 27 lothian bus from stop near roundabout at Salveston way. As l have a car you can drive and park as its a 15 min walk from site. There is a large Morrisons a mile away with a large carpark so stocked up there as needed during my stay. On the opposite side of road to morrison's store is there fuel station with excellent fuel prices and a decent store inside selling normal forecourt items. Turning left out from caravan site you come to Silverknowes beach walk area with a great cafe, The Boardwalk Beach restaurant playing live music on the Sunday we visited. We had two massive ham and cheese toasties with latte. Very nice but a tad expensive however, we were on holiday, it was sunny, there was some relaxing spanish guitar music playing and best of all a nice place to rekax... However when walking along prom be wary of idiot cyclists who bomb along at high speed dodging around us tourists. I would personally have them banned as its dangerous.
Staff gave me details of a local takeway/delivery service as we didnt fancy cooking a meal. Very good portions and delicious. They do all types of meals, from the massive fish and chips I had, to indian, Chinese, Thai, pizzas, burgers so that was really...
