This may come across as a mixed review but I hope I'm fair. If you like lots of fresh air and short or long walks across rich landscapes away from the city hustle, you can't beat the serene countryside surroundings of The Fish Hotel. There really is something for everyone here. Whether you are wanting to have a solitary break for one, a couple, a family with children or just friends looking for a week or weekend away even if it's just you and the dog.
What's to like; clean comfortable rooms with excellent toiletries. Interesting choice of chalets, clamping style pods and tree houses when available, i really would like the opportunity try but we stayed in the "Stables" in name only, that had a well appointed room although it was a bit small for my liking (everything else was fully booked up for the weekend we went). There is a nice mix of hotel communal spaces with log fires comfy seating and large windows that take in all the surroundings both inside and out without having to encroach on anyone else. The landscape views are spectacular. The staff were super friendly and helpful and made our stay all the more comfortable. If I did have any issues it would be the attention to detail. And this is something that can be looked at by the management. I do like to feel pampered when away but I hate to have to bring attention to mistakes made when a service is offered even if it appears small, but little things, they add up and it becomes annoying. As an example when ordering wine from the extensive list you mustn't get given an alternative without getting informed the one listed has been changed or unavailable. This actually happened to us, also there should be a different menu between lunch and dinner in the "The Hook" the only restaurant onsite. After a few days it's a struggle to consider what you can eat if you dont want to venture beyond the hotel which you must do as the Broadway is really nice. A small local area of shops restaurants. Back to the hotel restaurant; dishes are quite simple in some instances a bit bland and lack seasoning. A little more imagination can be brought to bare for the menus I think. It appears they have a well staffed and professional looking open kitchen. The cooked breakfast either regular or vegetarian was a bit hit and mostly miss and just bland, and only comparable to that of a motorway service station. To be honest it was the first time i ever had served up a hard boiled poached egg on muffins that should have been called biscuits. Well we were leaving that day and you are never sure how seriously to take an offer of a replacement in these situations so didnt bother to ask. They're just lucky I didn't post a photo to further the embarrassment. You see it's the simple things that if done well make all the difference. The coffee and tea was really good though! There were other things I wanted to mention but its best I inform the Hotel directly as they are easy to rectify and may not affect anyone else if resolved. Things that could be better that you may want to consider asking before your stay ( As you really should consider booking in spite of anything I say here) The Audio\Visual provided in the room was very limited in use and choice, although this may suit others in this day and age access to smart tvs or radios should be a given, even if the guest chooses to use their personal netflix login or similar streaming service. I must add this maybe different in the other room categories. I'm still giving the Fish 3 stars as there is so much potential and I would love to go again and stay in one of the other room categories and perhaps have a better experience. For everyone else Just work out when you want to go and try and get your booking to suit. For warned is to be for armed.. or...
Read moreNo apologies for this being the longest review i have written on Google but you need to know the unvarnished truth about The Fish. I booked directly in March this year, initially to stay in Dormy House with my wife, teenage son and our dog. We ended up at The Fish in a Big Suite and a medium room....for 4 nights.... The entrance and drive in promised much, and reception and check in was happy and efficient, until i realized I had only one room key, so had to return to reception as for some reason they had separated my reservation, same happened on checking out !! We had the pleasure of the Barnes Wallace suite, as we arrived the gentle hum and distinct aroma of cess pitt emptying was evident. So a triple aspect suite on the ground floor with Cess Pit and Car park one side, the entrance way to the stable at the front door which continues past the other window. So for any privacy you have to keep all the blinds down, absolutely NO view... First night, eventually we got served, some presentable food... Second day i went with my son to sort out the activities which were advertised when we booked, Segway safari and archery, well they are no longer offered. If i would like them to be arranged a small charge of £900.00...I expressed my displeasure to the reception team who promised to advise the management.... The second day some friends had come from London and booked in for the night....Sitting in the glorious sunshine drinking gin and tonic in one of the 4 cabanas outside the shed was not the joy it should have been. First clear the table then ask someone to clean the table of jam from the afternoon tea ( which never happened) then go to the bar order drinks...The problem is management who do not have the experience to see the failings...There are some excellent individual staff who are running but you can't be everywhere all the time. One of the "managers" whose name I would mention if i had his card, came with a limp apology for the lack of the activities advertised when i booked... Simple communication when they decided to cancel the activities would have been enough for me to cancel my booking and go elsewhere...and save me writing this review. So we get to dinner for 4, only one portion of Risotto available as the kitchen was out of rice and peas, or maybe it was pre made bags of Risotto ? Our first choice of red wine was also unavailable, service was slow, food distinctly average when it arrived.... Had a long conversation with 2 of the "managers" the next day where i discussed frankly the issues we had encountered,. Being woken on our second morning by the cess pit tanker didn't start the day well... There is tremendous potential for The Fish, but it needs to decide what it wants to be. Tree houses and hideaways, which are not dog friendly, or corporate energizer days which fill up the rooms and the bar, and block the drive with coaches... If you want a suite in a car park next to a cess pit with absolutely no view The...
Read moreStayed here for a 40th Anniversary weekend recently, and overall, we enjoyed our time in the Cotswolds. ||However, as nice as the Fish and also the wider estate is, there are some quite disappointing elements to the experience. Our hideout cabin was great. They're small and quirky being set in the woodland, but have what you need for a few days away. The hot tubs in little spaces attached are nice, with f8repits and swing seat within the space. Lighting around hot tub would be better if it wasn't so bright, and also, some kind of canopy might be a good addition, to enable their use even if it's raining. Apart from that, no complaints on these spaces, it was good.||However, where things fall down is in service and food options, especially at breakfast. More than once we ordered something, and yet, it appeared it was completely forgotten. A half hour wait to be served a dessert isn't great, though to the waitresses credit, we did receive an apology. Main meals during this occasion were quite poor too, which didn't help make for the best experience overall.||Breakfast is where things seem to need major improvement though. Our first morning cooked breakfast was all a bit cold, and it just had the feel of being a "that'll do" kind of effort. Bacon maybe slightly undercooked and not hot, poached eggs that were stone cold and a thin slice of black pudding that was served as a semi circular piece the size of half a biscuit. If they were low on it, I'd rather be told that, than be served such a woeful piece. It was pointless. The second morning we decided to skip the English option and chose eggs benedict. This came served on poor quality muffins, not toasted, so doughy and unpleasant, with a slice of cold ham slapped over the muffins below the eggs, which does nothing to help cooked eggs retain heat. It was without doubt the worst eggs benedict I've ever had.||All this might seem like nit picking, but when you choose to stay somewhere on a bed and breakfast basis, the morning meal is a significant part of it. People may have planned a busy day ahead or might have to travel some distance, but whatever, when a stay costs what the Fish is charging, it really needs to meet the minimum standard this place is trying to convey it sets. Unfortunately, it didn't meet those standards for us. ||On that basis, if we visited the Cotwolds again, we'd likely choose an alternative place to stay, because there are numerous options...
