We had a very significant family occasion and chose Dungeness as the site of our gathering. At the end of a wonderful day, which had been difficult for everyone involved, we wandered into the Captain Howey pub looking forward to a drink and a relaxing evening. We were met by the most surly and unpleasant barman who more or less flung our drinks on the bar. He was actually bristling with some deep rooted issue (perhaps because we were out of towners?) his eyes were blazing with hatred. One of our party, joined us at the pub with the remains of a kebab in his hand, which I’ll admit was most ill advised, however the numbskull of a landlord, instead of issuing a polite request to go outside and finish the food, chose to swear and speak to the member of our party like something on the bottom of his shoe, embarrassing him in front of the whole pub and obviously trying to pick a fight. Then a brassy, cheap, foul mouthed bar maid jumped out from behind the bar, backed up by a group of Neanderthal locals and an almighty brawl nearly broke our. That group of low life scum bugs would’ve fought dirty. They would’ve used glasses, knives, chairs anything they could get their hands on. Luckily we all managed to get out unscathed. I strongly urge anyone in their right mind to boycott this horrible dive of a pub at all costs. I look forward to the next time I’m in dungeness and see a Tesco express on the site of the former Captain Howey pub and with a bit of luck, the landlord buried deep underneath it. STAY AWAY...
Read moreBooked a small room in the attic, which opened onto a tiny enclosed hallway with multiple fire door stickers and warnings. The door to downstairs was not immediately obvious each time I went into this dark tiny "hallway." I asked to switch rooms, and Dina was kind enough to let me, so my new room had a great view of the sky over the sea, and it was much less claustrophobia-inducing. The bed was very comfortable, with LOTS of pillows.||I didn't know about the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway (RH&DR) across the street until I arrived. It seemed very cool and I might otherwise have timed my arrival so that I could ride down to Dungeness and back. ||There is no staff on site overnight, so I was locked into a deserted building all night. I have never met with this situation before. In fact, I never met a hotel staffer face to face. Just phone calls. The pub staff told me to go through a nondescript door, and my key would be in the room (so everyone in town knows how this works). As a mildly paranoid solo traveller, this made me feel unsafe, reality or not. If I had been with others, it might have been fun. We could have played pool in the empty pub all night maybe. So, just...
Read moreHaving now stayed at the Captain Howey Hotel restaurant and bar for over 5 weeks due to working in the local area. I must commend John and Chris and their amazing staff on a homely and enjoyable stay, I normally stay in travel lodges but this was a blessing in disguise being only less than a mile from my place of work which was nothing more than so easy. The hospitality is second to none nothing is to much trouble at all. The rooms are clean and tidy and to a high standard and the home cooked food is incredible. I have eaten well every night the mixed grill and Sunday roast carvery are excellent as is the salmon and minted lamb . The mixed grill has to be one of the best I have ever eaten. I also had a cooked breakfast at a time convenient to myself daily which was at 0700 hrs again this was no problem at all and as I mentioned before you will go a long way to beat this establishment. Thank you so much and well done. Hope to see you all...
