I’d read the previous reviews and was not deterred by reports that the owner was rude as I assumed it must have just been a clash of personalities. Indeed when I messaged the owner before our stay, to enquire whether it would be ok to collect a key earlier, he was polite, friendly and accommodating. He confirmed it was fine for me to collect a key at 11am on the understanding I couldn’t access the room at that time, it was just so we could go into town without needing to return early to check in.|We arrived at 11:15 and couldn’t access the car park as a car was blocking the entrance. I rang the telephone number and a lady informed me abruptly I couldn’t come in as check in was at 2 and she was busy cleaning rooms. I tried to explain that Arthur has confirmed I could collect a key earlier but she hung up.|We then saw Arthur in the doorway. We asked if we could get onto the car park and was told no we couldn’t, he said if we had been there before him we could but he was parked there now so we couldn’t. He then went on to say we couldn’t check in because they don’t allow it until 2pm. He explained that businesses have opening times and you can’t expect them to change them. I kept trying to explain that I’d emailed previously and he’d said it was ok but he wasn’t having any of it. He said he was sick of people disregarding opening times.|He went back inside so we got in the car to leave then he came out and moved the car and directed me to a spot. He eventually gave us a key begrudgingly whilst complaining that I was taking him away from cleaning the rooms. |His rudeness was so unbelievable, we were stunned. We didn’t even really answer him back as we were just gob smacked. We accessed our room later and it was ok. Tired, but grubby, but I wasn’t expecting the ritz for the price we paid.|Breakfast the next morning was fine too, and Arthur was full of charm the next day.|If it hadn’t been for the rude greeting, I would have given it a better rating, as the location is fantastic. Just let down by the...
Read moreWe arrived 40 minutes before check-in, after a long drive from a funeral. There was no-one to receive us but a notice included a phone number. I called the number and was rudely told that I was too early and that I'd have to wait until check-in time which was "an appointment, just like with a doctor". When we returned, the proprietor took issue with the way my wife had parked her car. It was not within the lines, but had strayed into another space (which was not big enough for another car). He barked that she should move it. She asked whether any car could use the space into which she had penetrated by 8 inches. He responded by saying, " I do not answer questions, I'm not here to be humiliated. Move the car or...you don't have to take the room."|When it came to room allocation, he claimed that "Booking.com had decided that we should have room 14, a twin room". We had indeed selected the option twin or double. So he started to check us into the twin room. We obviously would have appeared somewhat dismayed, but had been told not to ask questions. He then performed a passive aggressive move by telling us he could put us in a double room. Of course, all of that could have been avoided. |We received rudeness, aggression, sarcasm, passive aggression and latterly obsequiousness. |Once in the room, the shock from our treatment caused us to ponder our plans. Dare we move the car? It threatened to spoil our evening, but eventually gave us and our York friends a good laugh at this pathetic person. |Should you use this hotel? The room was good. The bed was very comfortable, the en suite was great. Breakfast was OK. |I'm sure there are better places to stay in York. We won't be returning to Clifton...
Read moreWhat an absolutely lovely weekend we've had in York! Arthur is a lovely man and cooks the best breakfast too!
We arrived early on Saturday morning, and after previously emailing Arthur asking if we could park up early and walk into York he said we absolutely could. Them we could check in from 2pm. The carpark is a bit tight, especially if you have an estate car like we did. But it can easily fit 3 cars in, we'd just recommend reversing in so it's a bit easier getting out.
The rooms are clean, beds are so comfy and the shower is really powerful and hot! Easily adjustable to whatever temperature you'd like. Although the decor isn't to everyone's tastes in the room, it's spotless and extremely comfortable to spend the night. Bottled water, tea, coffee and biscuits are provided along with toiletries in the bathroom which was an unexpected treat! The rooms are such a good value considering the cost of staying in York! Add in free parking with a yummy cooked breakfast and its really good value for money!
We saw the negative reviews, and honestly you could see they were written by a bunch of "karens" for lack of a better word. None of them had a leg to stand on.
When we checked out for the day today we said goodbye and thank you to Arthur and his colleague at the kitchen and we got the biggest loveliest grin! We'll definitely be back and we'll be bringing our friends!
Best girls weekend away for the...
