We went to the YHA York Hostel to celebrate my partner's birthday, and getting there was easy as we could follow the directions via google maps. It was a straight line down, and I could also see bus links from the city centre to the YHA, which we used later on. When we went to the reception, we were asked for our identification for safety purposes before being given the key to the room for the week.
The main building had wheelchair access plus stairs to accommodate a wide range of people, and the reception was connected to the bar; it was often the same person checking people in who were serving drinks, but we never felt that we had to wait for long, and the staff were so friendly and kind. There were two vending machines when we visited, one serving cold drinks and snacks and the other serving ice cream, and both machines had a card and cash options, which was handy, especially for those midnight cravings. There was a kitchen too, just left from the reception, and this was very well maintained with several fridges and pots and pans, meaning that we could cook our meals provided we washed up afterwards. I did appreciate that there was even a small section of free things that previous guests left behind that had a long shelf life, such as pasta, spices, and even tea bags.
Our room was lovely, and we had to go outside for this, which wasn't far at all, actually where the ramp is to get to the main building, there's a little gate you can open to gain access to this area too, or you can walk through the main building and passing the kitchen before you get to this area. We were given a physical key, which was pretty easy to open, as generally, it can be challenging to open with those specific keys. When we walked in, we could see a shower room on our left; this shower was lovely but a little on the small side. It has a section where we could leave our shampoos and soaps, and we found the shower lovely. There is then a sink by the door as the toilet does not have a sink inside, this was fine as it meant my partner and I could brush our teeth even if the bathroom were preoccupied. There is a double bunk bed which I used, and there were no problems there, and it has a singular UK plug and a bedlamp meaning it would be really easy to do nighttime reading. There was a large cupboard that was used for our shoes and bags, which was very appreciated. There was a slight spiral upstairs area with a double bed and a small window to allow ventilation.
Overall, we found this place to be lovely, the staff were super kind, and the food was lovely too! We would be happy to recommend this place to anyone exploring York but wanting to do it...
Read moreThis is my first time staying at YHA. I have to say I will not be coming back to stay. I arrived to check in just after 2p.m. Unfortunately, my room wasn't ready. The staff told me they were running late and the room wouldn't be ready for another hour. She then suggested that I go do some sightseeing. It was a suggestion without an apology. I had just made a trip up from London and I was tired. I didn't mind so much though because I did want to check out the place. I came back to the hostel about an hour later and I was made wait for another hour, with no apology. The staff I met this time was very abrupt, and told me that her colleague had gone to check whether the room was ready. I waited in the waiting area for them. Neither of them came up to me to let me know what was going on. There was still no apology. The abrupt staff kept walking past me and said nothing to me. Not even to let me know what the issue was with the room. I got tired of waiting, and I went up to the desk. They then told me that the room was ready., but there was hoovering going on. Yet again, with no apology.
When I got to the room, the sink was blocked. There was also a false fire alarm. It went off for a good while at first. It then stopped, went off again, stopped. This happened for a good while. I had an interview the next day and I needed my sleep.
Sometimes, these things happen. I might have excused if the staff apologised but nothing was said to me. I just don't find it very friendly.
Aside these points, everything else was fine . The room smelled a bit funny at first. Not a bad smell, but not necessarily a good smell. The bathroom was clean enough, the toilet not so much. The plastic cover on the...
Read moreAvoid if disabled or single female||||Booked a two night stay that was extended by a night. Clearly labled my booking as a disabled booking. On one night I accidentally locked myself out of my room asked to be let back in was told no problem but staff would not listen to I wear a prosthetic foot. Eventually I had to say forget it I’ll sleep in the lobby as was Fed up of explaining repeatedly. For the next 3 hours any movement I made around the building was watched and stalked with exception of the bathroom. They kept refusing too acknowledged my disability but stalked me like crazy so stayed near security cameras at 3am the staff finally admitted they had found my disability notes and allowed me in my room. Next day manager came and discussion also revealed staff believed I wasn’t a legitimate guest no apology was given just a mutual agreement of cultural language misunderstanding. 4 weeks later I am banned from all yha and threatened with police action for booking when not told because the staff here refused to let me in my paid room between 11pm and 3am.|| Night staff also are absolute lieing scumbags who not only refuse to listen but then claim you didn’t inform them or that they lie. Seriously why would I refuse to enter a room when they refuse to a) give me a key or b) let me in the room. Best tip I can give if talking to night staff make sure you have your phone on and are recording. If things go wrong you will need your evidence. Manager is just as deceitful...
