We did not enjoy our stay here and the people running the guest house could not see what they had done wrong. ||||When we booked the room directly with the operator on the phone we were told that, even though we had stated twice that we would want breakfast, we could just inform them when we arrived. We were also told that we were guaranteed a parking space in the car park. We also mentioned that we would likely arrive early (around 1pm) a couple of hours before check-in time and asked if we could drop off our bags, wander around the city before retuning later to check-in. We were informed this was fine.||||We arrived when we said we would. No-one was in sight and no-one answered after numerous phone calls to the number provided on the door (for deliveries) or the website. No-one answered when we knocked on the door numerous times either. So we had to carry our bags around the city walls (in the rain) to return later. They phoned us at some point during the afternoon and left a message but it was too late by then as we were walking around the city centre trying to enjoy our break.||||When we came back to check-in around 4:30pm there was still no answer at the door and they only answered the phone after the 3rd attempt. Their response when we complained was that the manager had had a doctorâs appointment when we first arrived and that they had tried to phone us later but we didnât answer so they had done nothing wrong. It turned out they had no idea we were going to turn up early anyway. It is highly disappointing that our specific request was not recorded and dismissed out of hand.||||We informed them we would be requiring breakfast at which point they said breakfast had been suspended because the owner's wife was away so there was no-one to cook. However, they would be honouring breakfast for people who had pre-booked it. When we mentioned that we had been told on the phone that we didnât need to pre-book and we were to just inform them when we arrive they said they had nothing recorded to reflect that - so basically our fault. Considering what had already transpired they didnât think to offer us a continental breakfast, which I assume is what they were offering others who had pre-booked. Instead, they told us there was a breakfast place just up the road so we wouldnât miss out on breakfast so thereâs no problem there. They clearly didnât understand the issue and the breakfast the next day, in what I guess was some kind of cafe, was dire! (They used cheap ingredients - the âgrilled tomatoâ was half a tin of uncooked chopped tomatoes and the sausages and bacon were very cheap meat. There was no vegetarian option available. We had to suggest what to cook [basically take the meat out] after they suggested a baked potato for breakfast and were then rude to us when we questioned the validity of that option.)||||We were, understandably, not happy at that stage and they offered us a free drink to make up for our inconvenience, which we declined. We had to phone the manager who was off site for a resolution. He got all flustered on the phone. We suggested a 10% refund. He said he wasnât sure about it then pretended someone had come to the door and hung up. He phoned back 10 minutes later suggesting a refund of 10%, which we sorted out pretty quickly. They still looked baffled about what they had done wrong.||||We came by train but noticed in the car park that it said parking spots were on a 1st come 1st served basis ⌠so not a guaranteed parking spot as we were informed on the phone. Just as well we didnât drive in the end as parking elsewhere would have been expensive.||||On our final day we needed to leave our luggage somewhere to collect later in the day after checking out in the morning. We didnât trust them to be there later so we booked a luggage locker somewhere in the centre of York. This obviously was another unexpected expense which we shouldnât have had to pay for which was annoying.||||The room was nice enough but the 2 way shower head wasnât working properly and the WiFi wasnât great for when we needed to look up other places to leave the luggage on the final day.||||All in all an unacceptable experience which tarnished our overall experience of York. It beggars belief that the operator thought their behaviour was acceptable. You try to support smaller businesses but when they behave like that it makes you wish you just went to a Travelodge with a guaranteed manned reception...
Read moreThis is an absolutely lovely B&B in a listed building. Aggie contacted me in the morning to confirm our expected arrival time, which was very considerate. She was so friendly when we checked in, gave us a map and lots of local knowledge. We were shown to Room 4, which is a beautiful, large family room with a double bed and bunkbeds. There was complimentary tea, coffee, biscuits and chocolates as well as toiletries. The beds were extremely comfortable. The B&B is about a 15min walk from the centre, so there's no need to drive as parking in York can be difficult, especially last week during the Viking Festival. We didn't book breakfast (unfortunately this wasn't an option on Hotels.com) but Aggie's does look delicious. There are a couple of cafes on the same road as The Burton Stone so we ate at those. The bar at the Burton Stone is open from 4pm to 8pm so you can refuel after a long day. Aggie was running the place single-handedly during an extremely busy half-term and did an amazing job! There are games in the bar area to keep the kids entertained and away from gadgets!! On our last day, check out was at 10am but Aggie kindly allowed us to leave our car in the car park whilst we enjoyed a full day in York. My only issue (and this is not a criticism of The Burton Stone) is that next doors tv was extremely loud until very late on. Other people have mentioned the road noise, yes it's a very busy main road but I live in a big city so I hardly noticed it to be honest. I would definitely stay here again but next time I would book directly through the Burton Stone website and order breakfast! Thank you so much for your warm...
Read moreNot sure why two people felt the need to review this b&b on tripadvisor with identical photos, it seems a bit unfair other than to try and knock it down the ratings. They failed in my eyes because weâve literally just left after staying in the same room and I can honestly say itâs not as awful or even bad as they make out!
It clearly shows on every photo that itâs rooms above a pub.
The room was clean and had everything we needed. Yes there were some water marks on the bathroom cabinet but the they are upgrading the b&b all the time and will get round to replacing this Iâm certain. The hallway mirror and candles looked clean to us and the throw on the bed was too. Itâs a listed building where windows canât be replaced but they are useable and open when needed and thereâs extra sliding glass to drown out any noise from outside.
The location is perfect, 10-15 minutes slow walk down a straight road and youâre at the Minster. We ate at the Hole in the Wall pub on the way and it was really good value and worth a visit.
Breakfast was really good with lots of choice and youâre allowed to order off menu too.
Both Aggie & Michal were so friend welcoming, the best weâve experienced and weâve travelled all over the world. Nothing was too much for them and despite checkout being around 10am we could leave the car in their park and stay in York for longer.
We will definitely be returning in the future! Thanks Aggie & Michal, keep up the hard work because itâs really appreciated and enjoy your holidays. ⌠without any hospital visits!!! đ¤đ....
