This is a small dormitory style hotel, where check in/hotel reception is actually in the pub/restaurant facing it. They were friendly and efficient in there and I had my room key within 2 minutes of entering the building. The hotel itself is quiet and set back from the A78 dual carriageway at a roundabout junction. So it's a good location for getting about, but the views are of a road wide services and scrub land so no spectacular visas or Seaview to be had here. The foyer has a vending machine and leaflets racks, and entry to the main corridors is accessed through a door that requires your key card to unlock. I was in a ground floor room which was a decent size, clean and quiet, and comes with a hairdryer tea and coffee facilities and a decent sized TV that you can signing and out of your streaming services on, should you wish, alongside an en-suite bath/shower room. The bed and small pillows were comfortable. No complaints really. Reasonable accommodation at a reasonable cost. If you're looking for somewhere clean to rest your head each evening after spending your day exploring all this area has to offer (which is lots) then you are well served. For the price it gets 4 stars, although that doesn't mean it's a four star hotel.

This is the first restaurant I have ever visited which requests staff to be tipped even before the meal has been served. I did tip £5 but I wish I had not. The Hunters chicken I had was missing the BBQ sauce stated in the menu, the Mozzarella and cheddar cheese had obviously evaporated during the cooking process because it wasn’t present on my plate! The rocket leaves were withered and very dried out with some of the leaves rotten and black! I tried to complain to the waiter with a beard, walking about with shorts. However he started to make excuses and didn’t appear interested in what I was saying at all. My wife had scampi which was ok! After eating what was served we left and will not return! I would not have left £5 tip if I knew what poor meal and service we would receive. I have photographs of my plate of ‘Hunter’s Chicken’! ‘HUNTER'S CHICKEN A roasted chicken breast topped with melted Mozzarella and Cheddar cheese and crispy bacon, smothered in BBQ sauce. Served with chips, a grilled tomato, beer-battered onion rings and finished with rocket.’

First of all, this was the first time I’d used Marston’s so wasn’t aware that, in Stevenson at least, it’s a dormitory hotel in that it’s unmanned with Reception in the Red Squirrel Inn. Stayed in Room 206 with a very comfortable bed and pillows and the room itself was very quiet. The only issue was that the shower curtain was way too short and didn’t reach the lip of the bath - water everywhere! Also, it’s quite a step up and in to the bath but there’s no grip rail on the back wall so could be a little tricky for some people. I think that Marston should really consider adding one before someone has an accident! The Red Squirrel Inn was excellent with an, easy to order at table, food and drink system via smart phone and quick service from a friendly staff. Particularly enjoyed the Scottish full breakfast in the morning!

I have stayed at the Red Squirrel before as it is the closest hotel to my elderly mother. The accommodation has always been basic but adequate, but I don't know what happened this trip; maybe new staff or less staff, but I said l'd write a review in the hopes they would read it and do better. My husband and I booked this for the day we arrived in Ayrshire to take my mother out for a much-needed reprise from caring for my elderly Stepfather who has dementia. This involved me staying with my stepdad while my husband took Mum out for a trip to the hairdressers and a couple of big stores which she is never able to do unaided. Afterwards, we said our goodbyes exhausted and headed to the hotel. We got our room card and headed over. The room was large enough and clean enough but the walls had holes in them as if someone had been in a hammer fight. The bed was comfortable enough and we washed up to go for a quick dinner. Nothing I could fault in the restaurant except it was slow. The food was good and we headed to the room to sleep, but not before l'd asked about a late checkout option which was £20 to give us 2 extra hours. I paid this as I knew we needed it. Sleep was fine as the beds were comfortable, but I got up first and had a shower. I discovered the shower curtain didn't reach the bath so by the end the floor was soaked. I also never heard my husband getting woken by a housekeeper banging on the door demanding attention. He opened it to be told checkout was 11 and we were late. My husband told her we had paid for a late checkout and were fine till 1 pm, to which she said she would need to go check that. Surely something that should be done first thing. Awakened my husband went for his shower, but when finished we realised there were no extra towels. We had a family room that caters to 4 with ONE bath towel. We were furious. I grabbed one from the trolley further up the corridor. I mentioned all of this when checking out but was not impressed with the reception's complacency hence I'm putting it all down here. We have to use this hotel again, as I said it's closest to my mother and she needs an operation soon so we will need to be close by, but I do hope Marstons sees this and addresses the issues. At over £100 for the night, l'd expect...
