As a family of 3, we've stayed 7 days at the Eskbank – Rathan House and overall, we've had a very pleasant stay.||Although seemingly located far away from Edinburgh, the city center is only around 30 minutes by bus #3, with a stop located just next to Rathan House. From this stop, you can also reach Rosslyn Chapel and Musselburgh with bus #140.|In Dalkeith town center, only 5 mins away by walk, you'll find supermarkets, restaurants and all other stores and services you may need during your stay.||Although we did not stay in one of the most newly renovated rooms available, our room was spacious and all appliances were working properly. Nothing was missing for a comfortable stay.|The neighborhood is very quiet and the house's garden makes for a perfect place to rest and play with the two family dogs, Flora and Rowan.|The breakfast is a typically Scottish one, with salmon, smoked fish or fish croquettes on the menu.|While eating, your host Mr. McCrea, will surely treat you to a couple of Scottish pirates tales from the seven seas.||Mr. and Mrs. McCrea have been warm and thoughtful hosts, making Rathan House a great lodging for anyone wanting to explore Edinburgh and its...
Read moreWe very much enjoyed our stay at The Eskbank Hotel! We were looking for a local, guesthouse / B&B for our trip up to Edinburgh for my sister’s wedding and Ewan and Irene’s place was exactly that. The rooms were comfortable and clean, and we were very happy with the view overlooking the gorgeous garden with a symphony of birdsong to wake up to every morning. ||Note that this isn’t your standard hotel experience, so don’t expect the usual amenities of an intercontinental breakfast or 24/h check-in but expect something more personal and genuine in my opinion. Breakfast is served at 8:45 and while there is no menu to select from, what you are served are local, healthy and hearty Hebridean breakfasts which we loved. Our morning chats with Ewan, one of the property’s proprietors, were entertaining and educating and we felt very much at ease! The two sweet dogs Flora and Rowan were an added bonus, and made us feel like we were staying in someone’s house (which we were!)||The location was very convenient for us, and was only a 20 minute or so drive into Edinburgh. The bus stop outside was another alternative, but we didn’t use the bus system...
Read moreI’m leaving a 5-star review because of the service Ewan provided even though I wasn’t even a patron of this hotel. I was planning a trip for my wife and I through Scotland and wanted to book two nights at The Eskbank; tried to do this through the website but didn’t get a confirmation so I emailed to investigate. One of the owners, Ewan, emailed back to say they were going to be on holiday and wouldn’t be able to accommodate us, but would do some digging for other B&Bs nearby. The next morning he sent another email saying he contacted Carolyn at Aaron Glen Guesthouse on my behalf to check availability, said they had a room available for us, and provided contact info while also promoting the merits of this other establishment. We ended up staying at Aaron Glen and it was as great as he advertised, so I wanted to make sure I noted publicly how helpful Ewan was even though he didn’t need to be. If this display of going above and beyond for good customer service is any indication, staying at The Eskbank Hotel would be a...
