If I could rate it 3.5 I probably would, but anyway... This was a decent place to stay for the price, definitely a "no frills" type lodging. When we arrived around 9pm for check-in, after a long day of travel, there was a sign on the door saying check-in was 4-10pm, but the office was closed until 9:55 for a van run. We we're cold and tired and ready to go to sleep, and we had to wait almost an hour for someone to show up. We waited in the cafe across the street. We got back at 9:53 to the office door locked and an envelope stuck to it with our name with a key inside. Ugh. When the guy at the desk saw us taking the envelope, he came out and seemed a little annoyed with us. I had questions about parking and ATV reservations for the following day. He said we were good to go, could get our voucher in the morning. The cabin was tucked away from the part and a bit hard to find in the dark. It would be helpful to have a light on for people if they are arriving after dark. Linens were provided (and you're not allowed to bring your own) which was convenient, but what's provided isn't very warm, just a thin sheet set and light bedspread from Walmart. The heat worked OKAY. The cabin itself was clean. WiFi was spotty. Don't try to Netflix binge! , It was very quiet. In the morning we went to the office to pay for & pick up our ATV voucher showing proof of pre- registration. Again it was closed, shuttle run. Had to wait 20+ minutes, and we hadn't factored that into our travel time to the ATV place. Guy at the desk finally got back, said nothing special was needed. When we got to the ATV place, we found out they didn't have us in the system as being reserved through the hostel. We ended up having to take a later tour slot with a different shorter trip duration, resulting in the hostel needing to refund us the difference. When we got back to the hotel later in the evening, I talked to a nice young lady at the desk to inquire about refund process for ATV tour cost difference. She said person on previous shift who would have spoken to ATV tour place left no notes and she didn't know anything about it, but she saw what appeared to be a refund issued earlier in the day to an unknown account/guest. She said she would check on it and...

I never did get a very good feeling about Denali Hostel and Cabins. I had arrived early and waited out front for them to open and while I could hear them inside, they didn't open until well after 4PM. While I was waiting for them to open, I read the list of rules on the bulletin board and there were more don't than do's. It starts you off on a real negative note. The dormitory is located above the kitchen and common area and my first night staying at the hostel, there were a lot of people up late and very loud, so I didn't get a very good nights sleep. That and the Hostel is located right on the highway and the sound of trucks going by all night can disturb your sleep as well. I know that it's not the Hostel's fault, but one of the other guest became annoying to me in the same sense as when a drunk person becomes overly friendly when you're sober. He didn't seem to take a hint that he was bothering me and it was kind of creepy. I was never really able to get any rest and relaxation at the hostel so all things considered I decided not to stay another night and because of their no-refund policy I had to forfeit the cost of a nights stay. This seems unfair since they were never very busy while I was there. In fact one night I had the dormitory all to myself. I spoke with a young man in the office about my issues the day that I left and even asked if I could have credit towards a future stay and was informed that if I chose to leave I was out of luck and would forfeit my money. One plus is Panorama Pizza across the street serves phenomenal food and The Creekside Cafe had an amazing blueberry scone. That made up for some of the...

Stayed here for one night while visiting Denali. It was only about 15-20 minutes away from the main entrance to Denali. Arrived late at night, but they leave clear instructions on checking in and a map for you to easily find your cabin. You're able to unload your car at the cabin, but must park your vehicle up front at the entrance. The grounds were very nice. There were many community amenities from outdoor games, firepits, sitting areas, small garden, etc... The background and sound of the Carlo Creek was very relaxing. Stayed in the Coffee Grinder room which was 4 bunk beds consisting of a double bed and a single bed above. Room was clean and everything from towels, electric fly swatter, and mini heater. Hint, keep the door closed or you will be using the electric fly swatter. The shower facilities were right next to the cabin and I went before 7a to avoid any wait. There were about 8 individual, private showers and restrooms, but they are shared by all the guests. Each had disinfecting spray to be used before and after each shower. I didn't spend much time in the main house with the kitchen and other amenities, but saw people in there just relaxing, playing games, and reading books. This was a great place to getaway and enjoy the basics of life. There was just enough Wi-Fi and cellular service to stay connected, but not enough to be constantly glued online. Great location to Denali and had all the amenities you need for simple cabin living.

Buyer beware the shuttle service is run by one guy who's overwhelmed. We were forgotten at the train station upon arrival. It was a mix up where he picked up the correct number of people, but not the right people. We were refunded our payment. We scheduled an ATV tour for that afternoon and they actually picked us up, thanks Bob! The property is gorgeous! We loved the creek and even stuck our feet in, brr! We were comfortable in our cabin, too. We were in Razorback. My only complaint with the cabin was the curtains. Upstairs there were 3 windows, one had a blackout shade and a partial curtain, another had a full curtain that let light through and the other window had dark enough curtains. It needs to be dark with the constant sun. I'd stay here again if we had a car. It's not really close to Denali or the main boardwalk. It just felt like the shuttle service was a strain and he was always frustrated by the desperate tourists who had no idea what they were doing. Other hotels are in walking distance of the main boardwalk (shopping area/tour headquarters) and most hotels have shuttles running more often and free and without a reservation system. So this might be a better option for some travelers.

We stayed at the Hostel for two days on our Alaskan trip - the first time my wife had ever stayed at a hostel. Everything was very clean and neat. The staff was very friendly both in helping us plan our Denali trip and while we were there. The only downside is we decided to stay in the main building, which has very steep steps to the rooms - we should have stayed in one of the cabins instead, just to avoid the steps. Located a few miles from the park, getting around took some planning. We took the train from Anchorage and then from Denali to Fairbanks, so we had no on site transportation. We used the Sheep Shuttle to get around. They were very easy to work with. Fortunately, the hostel is located across the street from two very good restaurants. We had pizza (The Kevin Bacon) at Panoramic Pizza the first night. We had breakfast both mornings and dinner one night at the McKinnley Creekside Cafe and Bakery. The food was great. All in all, would definitely recommend the Denali Hostel and Cabins.
