The hotel staff was incredibly unfriendly to us. We had just driven 6 hours with my 2 year old and 8 year old. My 2 year old had been in his car seat cooped up for several hours. ||We arrived at about 8:30 p.m. He was VERY active when we got into the room because he was stuck in his car seat for so long. He needed to get some energy out. He was running around the room (in a controlled manner - but he was busy). ||We did not even have our bags unloaded (so maybe after 8 minutes of getting in and getting settled) we get a call from the front desk that we were being too loud for the people below us! Keep in mind it was not even after 9:00 p.m. at this time. ||I felt like we couldn't even walk around unpacking our bags for fear of getting scolded again! I let the kids watch a movie and they settled down but after that we were not welcomed by the front desk staff at all. Anytime we had a question we were treated as if we were outcasts. The next day, we asked for help with the television in the workout room (which was a pretty lame workout room) and he couldn't figure it out so he just walked out after trying to help us for maybe 2 minutes... Didn't apologize. He didn't care that it didn't work. ||We then left to go and find a park nearby because we needed to get out of there. We felt very unwelcomed when we went to breakfast as well. My kids are GOOD kids... perfect, NOPE. But.... not like we were treated. If you have kids, do NOT go...
Read moreHonestly, it was pretty decent overnight, other than noticing the musty smell of the room when we walked in and the gross stains on and in the couch we were sitting on. In the morning i started cleaning up the bed and noticed a flea jumping around on the bed so I started to pull back the sheets and there was a previous piss stain and animal hair under the sheets. Then the next morning it gets to about 11:10am and one members of housekeeping and a different male staff member came to knock on the door. They weren't good at English, so the man pulled out his phone and he was on a call with another man and handed the phone to me and said "my friend". I got on the phone, and he explained to me that check out was at 11 and we should be leaving. I explained on the website, app, and the book inside the room all said check out is at 12. He told me, "There is no need to argue, we've never had check out at 12. It's always 11." Eventually, he just told me that it was fine and told them to give us more time, so I handed the phone over, and they walked away. During the next 10 minutes of us packing up and us leaving, all the staff stared at us as we left. Slightly...
Read moreUsually the best bang for your hotel buck in Ames. It's not the fanciest place, but it's reliably clean, friendly and up to date. It's clearly geared towards business travelers, no pool or playground, but it does have free WiFi, warm cookies at the front desk and the Wyndham breakfast which includes waffles.
When I visit I try to spring for the rooms with couches when I can, they are very homey and well designed - with a kitchenette type island in the center (no additional appliances beyond the usual minifridge and microwave, but some added cabinets, a sink and counterspace) that gives it a one bedroom suite feel even though it's sized like a normal hotel room. Note: the disabled version does not have this, I use a walker most of the time, and I actually prefer the "non-accessible" room with the couch.
The queen rooms are also functional and clean, but are a tad smaller than one would expect. I can't fathom trying to fit a rollaway in one, maybe a pack and play but it would be tight. They do have a comfortable...
