Walking up to the Babcock house was more exciting than my trips to Disney! Talia was such a gem and helped me with my luggage after a northern mockingbird greeted me next to my parking space. Once inside, my hopes for this weekend were exceeded. A cozy, yet spacious, and well decorated interior make the perfect environment for a relaxing weekend for the weary to recover and heal. The historical town and Bain's coffee up the street just added to the marvelous accommodations. The gift shop that shares a parking lot with the train depot had wonderful gifts and fantastic prices! Food was beyond my dreams. Perfection on a plate, my senses were delighted at the entire experience. The chef is talented, uses the freshest of ingredients and makes everything from scratch. Despite my peculiar tastes with food, absolutely everything was something I adored. The hospitality and customized accommodations to help relax: are not something not common when I am normally traveling. I slept like a rock for the first time in weeks and woke up refreshed and grateful. Afterwards I luxuriated in a lovely shower in the super clean, down to even the tiny often overlooked details, seriously, bathroom which is also decorated with such obvious love and care. The french press coffee, fresh fruit, omelettes and salads served in the morning were also presented with absolute attention to detail. Again, the chef listened to my preferences and that alone made me feel so comfortable sitting at the table. We discussed how Charles manages to make such a beautiful presentation, no matter the dish. I've gone on for far too long, but I think you dear reader might get the point. This place is worth it the drive. Come and relax, enjoy the southern charm, hospitality and history lessons.

GREAT STAY!!! This was a very awesome stay, the staff is really nice, and I would definitely stay here again! My sister and I decided to spend the weekend with my sister at her college at Longwood University and we wanted to try a bed-and-breakfast for the first time! We were extremely happy with our stay but Sunday morning we were a little shocked. We woke up around 8:30am, and we started packing up and cleaning up the room before heading down to breakfast, we had scheduled breakfast for 9 AM but we lost track of time packing and cleaning up that it was 15 minutes after nine so we rushed and got ready to go downstairs to get breakfast at 9:25 and we were told that we couldn’t eat breakfast. I found this to be a little odd since 9:25 in the morning isn’t that late for breakfast? The staff member Talia did explain that they had to prepare for brunch at 11 I believe but I still feel like we could have been served something……..? I would have been happy with it just some eggs, grits and bacon. Nothing fancy. It was just 2 of us. Again this WAS NOT a huge problem but just make a note that you need to be early or on time for your breakfast time otherwise you will not be served! Again, we were very satisfied with our service staying here and eating here, just wished the breakfast served to guests was a bit more flexible with time. Thank you so much Talia and Charles for a great stay and can’t wait to see you again! The two female waitresses were especially sweet and awesome! They felt like friends by the end of our service, and made us feel very comfortable as we were a bit nervous as this was our first time staying at hotel/B&B without our parents!

This by far was my best meal in Appomattox!!! We ate here 2 times and would have every day, but they were closed for July 4th. A B&B that is serving cuisine that could effortlessly make it in any cosmopolitan city on the east or west coast! The Chef hails from Mayland and knows his way around the kitchen. The staff are friendly efficient moving at lightning speed to seat, greet and deliver each creation to its destination all the while making sure your water glass is always full!!@!! The 1st day, I had Catfish, Fried Green Tomatoes French Fries, homemade Cornbread and this amazing remoulade that could be bottled and sold! My MoM had Meatloaf wrapped in homemade inhouse smoked applewood Bacon with Sweet Peas and Mashed Potatoes (her fave) reservations are recommended. Our selection was mouthwateringly fantabulous!!! So much so, I made reservations the following day for Sunday Brunch. I had 'Real' stone ground grits, scrambled eggs that were exquisite (light, fluffy pillowy goodness) homemade inhouse smoked bacon (again😋)with 2 cute little biscuits and homemade peach preserves and two Honeysuckle cocktails...Mmmm Honey! My MoM had ham and eggs with redeye gravy. As I perused the room every plate that came out of that kitchen was a work of art!! (James Beard award worthy) I found myself in the unlikely destination of Appomattox because my Grandmother is convelessing temporarily there. But, The Babcock, made a difficult time a little less stressful for me while I dined. And for that, I thank you!!! If I am ever there again, I will indeed have every meal at The Babcock House!!!

Babcock House

What we liked

Character & ambiance – The Babcock House is housed in a restored turn-of-the-century home (built around 1884) which gives it a strong historic feel. The rooms are furnished with period antiques, which adds charm.

Attentive service & warm hospitality – Hosts Talia and Charles are welcoming, friendly, and responsive.

Food quality – The breakfast gets high marks: fresh fruit, good coffee, homemade touches.

Location & quiet retreat vibe – If you want a more relaxed, historic-town stay rather than a big city hotel, it hits that mark. Babcock is loaded with character, history, and off-beat charm.

Things to keep in mind

Limited room inventory – It’s a small bed-and-breakfast with only a handful of rooms/suites. Book early if you have specific dates.

Location & surrounding amenities – Appomattox is historic and quaint, but not a bustling resort town. There is not much to do in the area though if you are looking for more activities. We found a bar and grill called Marshals that was fun but if you like nightlife, many nearby amenities, or a lot of urban activity, this may feel quieter than you expect.

Train noise – There is a train whistle nearby at various times which might affect very light sleepers.

Price vs expectation – Keep in mind that because it’s a historic home rather than a large hotel, some features (e.g., large modern amenities) might be more modest.

Dinner availability – The onsite dinner service is for guests, and is by request. If dining out is a big part of your stay, check ahead.

Who is this place good for?

• Couples or solo travelers looking for a quiet, interesting, charming getaway in a historic setting.

• People who appreciate character in lodging (antiques, history, small-scale) rather than a “big box” chain.

• Visitors to the Appomattox area for its historic significance (for example, visiting Appomattox Court House National Historical Park), who want comfortable lodging nearby.

• Travelers who are fine with fewer nightlife or high-density options and prefer a relaxed pace.

Who might want something else?

• If you’re after a vibrant hotel experience, major entertainment or nightlife right on site, or many onsite amenities (pool, spa, etc.) you may find this B&B more modest.

• If you’re looking for large-scale, high-luxury resort amenities, you might want to look at other options.

• If you don’t like older buildings (windows, shutters, maybe some creaks or quirks) heating and air conditioning is not room specific, water pressure is typical of a house with lots of guests showering at the same time, then a modern hotel might suit better.

My Verdict

If I were to summarize: The Babcock House offers charm, warmth, and excellent hospitality in a historic setting—and it delivers in those categories. Owners Talia and Charles have a singular goal and that is to make your stay amazing. It’s a strong choice for a restful, character-rich stay in Appomattox. If your travel style aligns with that, you’ll likely enjoy it. If your style is more high-energy, ultra-modern, or full of amenities, you’ll want to weigh whether the trade-off is...

This b&b is simply wonderful, it was one of the best parts of stopping into Appomattox by far. Easily one of the best places I have stayed in and I have been through multiple countries in Europe, have spent time on the west coast of the U.S. and Hawaii. I have experience many places to stay in, and this is easily top 5.

The House is spectacular, a perfect balance of the old southern colonial vibe mixed with the modern upkeep and base appliances found in all rooms to make you feel comfortable, and relaxed. The facility is very clean which is critical to any good stay even before factoring in the new pervasive COVID virus being involved. My room was near immaculate, which definitely cause me to feel at home and welcomed

The service is great, a genuine concern for guests to a level that is not artificial , but rather of true care for you and your experience. I was treated with care, respect, and hospitality.

The amenities are great, special artisan toiletries spoil you and make you feel lavish and pampered. Only thing I truly needed was a toothbrush and paste! They had it all!

Last and definitely not least, the food, holy cow was it good. The kitchen and attached restaurant completed the fabulous at home experience for me. I simply had to just walk downstairs and I was seated quickly and allowed to begin my delicious meal. A cocktail, a bowl of tomato bisque on a beautiful porch after driving 8 hours hit on another level , spectacular. Fried green tomatoes, and an entree of bacon wrapped meatloaf was made small batch and from scratch it was excellent and sufficiently filled the need for food. Finally Pecan Pie with a scoop of ginger ice cream, sealed the meal that night and left me waddling up ready for a good night's rest

A true gem of an establishment to visit if you are passing through or stopping in Appomattox, you would do yourself a favor and create some wonderful memories stopping into the wonderful...
