After another property, Hacienda Margarita, would not honor our reservation when we attempted to check in with our reservation confirmation... it was suggested we contact Canyon Hotel to try and get a room. There were limited options in Barranquitas, in the mountains, and the next closest hotel seemed to be in Caguas an hour away. We needed to find a place before evening curfew started. Hacienda Margarita put us in a desperate situation. A person gave us the phone number of the owner or manager (not sure which he was) of the Canyon Hotel to try. ||We drove to Canyon Hotel and the gates were locked to the building lobby. A called the owner again and told him we were here and the gates were locked. He said he was on another call and hung up on me. I called back again in a few minutes and he said he but not there, no staff was, but had one room he could rent us for $126. I could barely hear him from the street traffic, but finally gathered that the keys were in a lock box and I needed to go to the restaurant, ask for a guy named Kevin, and he could let us in and charge us for the room. ||Kevin had to call the guy, as the situation was confusing (and strange). Kevin showed us the room, which was very small with an attached bathroom, no windows. He ran our card and we took our stuff in. ||The room had a queen bed. The bathroom was so small the door would hit the sink and would not open all the way. The water didn’t warm up so we had cold showers. The shower head sprayer was shooting everywhere. The bed was okay. The decorative pillows and bed spread was stained. This property has no pool or amenities to speak of... But it was a place. ||As we tried to go to bed, Guests were laughing, screaming and running through the halls all night. There was no hotel staff on duty. There was no room phone to call anyone. I had earplugs in and could still hear them! At 10:15pm, I called the owner; no answer but left a message informing him of the problem. I also sent a text message and called again after 1am. There was never an answer or response to any calls or message. ||When we checked out the next morning the gate was open to front desk. I informed them about the situation. The man I spoke with just said “sorry”. I told him we should receive a discount. He said that was not possible. I was very upset by the entire situation, started crying and left. ||I would not recommend Canyon Hotel, or Hacienda Margarita, to...
Read moreI arrived here around 4:45pm, to find an empty car park, a locked door, and nobody around. There was a sign on the door in Spanish with a phone number, but without a US phone, I didn't want to spend £2/min on a call, and I wasn't in any rush... About half an hour later, some other people turned up hoping to stay there, and they duly called the number and a lady materialised 5 minutes later to unlock the door.||||Inside, it all looks very smart with spotlights, polished stone floors and several clocks behind the desk for different time zones. Don't be fooled though - the reservations system seemed to be entirely paper-based - I'd booked via Hotels.com but ended up filling out a paper form with all my details.||||I was then shown to my room (back out into the car park and in through a different gate), and the room looked equally modern - polished stone floor, air conditioning, flat-screen tv, wifi etc. It was a good size, but didn't have any windows, nor even any ventilation system. Fortunately the door wasn't air-tight, but I did wonder where the oxygen was supposed to come from... The bathroom was also in good condition, although the shower curtain rail hadn't been installed correctly so I did a quick DIY job for them to put it back up when it fell down.||||The place didn't seem to have any food or beverage options - I asked about dinner, and the lady recommended a place in the town (El Mofungo, which seemed to be the only place open when I later explored). There had been a bar and a few tables and chairs set up near the hotel reception desk, but I didn't hold out much hope of anyone servicing them. I see from the comment on a review in February that a breakfast option was planned to open "very soon" - there didn't seem to be much sign of progress on this in late August. I ended up continuing my drive westwards in the morning before stopping for some food, but one of the Shell stations in town might have produced some breakfast of sorts...||||So overall, if you want a clean bedroom in Barranquitas and nothing else, then this will do the job well. If you want the luxury of a window, don't forget to select that when you book, and preferably have a US phone so that you can call when you arrive. In hindsight, I'm not sure why I opted to spend the night in Barranquitas at all, but if you really want to, the Canyon Hotel might well be your...
Read moreIt's a creative space, but there isn't much to work with in the rooms. The guesthouse is modern and clean, and the prices are affordable. A stay for a night is about the most you'll need to figure out there isn't much else here. ||Access to the guesthouse is granted with a key to the main door. You have to lock the outside door at night. You get a room key, and both keys are on a keychain that you get when you check in. ||The positive: I was overwhelmingly impressed with room cleanliness. The spaces are fresh and appear brand new. The room has fairly quiet air conditioning unit that doesn't bother at night. ||The negative: The walls are thin, and don't mitigate sound enough during the evenings and at night. It gives off an air of having a bed inside a classroom.||The TV is small for the room size, and the satellite signal waivers and cuts out during the day. If you're looking to relax and watch a show, you're going to have a bad time.||The coat closet is inside the bathroom.||Water pressure was adequate, but again, because the walls are so thin, sounds and talking from other rooms are audible and clear during showers. ||The bed looks fancy, but it's stiff as a board. My partner and I barely got any sleep. ||Lastly, the sheet with guesthouse rules is excessive, and we felt all of the extra charges were condescending.||We understand there are rules, but to list each and the associated fees is over the top. A fee for extra pillows or towels?||Conclusion: It's nice to stay for a night, and the price fits the bill, but the no-frills approach makes this a...
