We reserved a block of rooms for our wedding, but were told by numerous guests that nobody answered the phones during the day so they could not make reservations easily. I also tried to contact the front desk several times to no avail. It should not have been that difficult for people to make reservations and we called several times to get an idea of who booked rooms and they had trouble figuring out which guests were with our wedding party, etc.. hopefully everyone got the wedding booking discount! The Sherman makes it known that they do not serve any food, but I still think that is a huge disadvantage for any hotel. Some of our guests did not stay there for that reason. And we had to bring in snacks/drinks for our wedding guests so they would not be hungry. We rented the General Sherman suite for our wedding night and it has a very business like decor which is not what you want for your wedding night. There is literally a conference table in the suite and it wasn’t very warm or inviting. The bedroom, however, was bright and the bed was nice. We did find out that the toiletries provided by the hotel were used as there was hardly any conditioner left in the container on the sink, which is terrible customer service. We also had one of our wedding guests tell us the same thing about their toiletries being used. Sadly, knowing that it was our wedding night, they did not make any effort to provide us with flowers or chocolates or anything, including bottled water to make coffee in the morning. To not even supply bottled water to any of the rooms is shocking! It felt like no one paid any attention to detail and certainly no one tried very hard to make our stay special. Lastly, no one is available at the front desk after 10 PM so if there’s an issue, you have to make a phone call. I don’t know if somebody would come from home and give you towels or fix your toilet or whatever but it’s pretty creepy to not have an employee there throughout the night. I don’t know how they get away with that. We tried to check out around 10:30 AM and couldn’t find an employee anywhere to ask for some assistance with getting our snacks packed up. It’s absurd! As a lifelong resident of Batesville, that was the first time I ever stayed at the Sherman and unless it gets new ownership and management, that would be the last time I will recommend anyone stay there. It’s a shame because it has rich history and character could be a real gem if in the right ownership. Hopefully someday they will open the black forest bar, the restaurant and the...
Read moreI am giving it a 4 star rating as I see the potential for a 5 star restaurant but they are not there yet. We went there shortly after they first reopened and were impressed. The bartender talked to us at length of the long term plans and what was still to be done. One thing we discussed was bar offerings and the lack of taps at the bar as well as a lack of true top shelf liquors such has higher end bourbon and scotch. With this type of restaurant one would expect a good high end liquor selection and he said that was in the works and selections would increase and taps added soon. Last night we decided to go back and were very disappointed nothing changed at the bar. In fact it seemed to be worse. Gaps on the liquor shelves, no taps and very dull atmosphere on a Friday night. One other thing would be adding some food that have some spice to it...add some heat. We like spicy and when getting the crab cake appetizer we ask for horseradish to kick it up a notch. In closing I feel that this place could easily be a 5 star restaurant but need to have follow thru and get items in that will make it a 5 star. We will be back to check out the restaurant again and hope they take positive steps. One other thing that is a small touch but is very noticed is my wife had no place to hang her purse at the bar or in the bathroom. Add hooks under the bar as well as hooks on the women's bathroom stall doors. We look forward to going back and hoping to see...
Read moreI loved this place as an eatery when I was a child, but my first visit back as a hotel guest in 50 years was a disappointment. First floor is very nice and the staff was helpful and very pleasant, but the opulent bar was not open and the meeting room was very cold on March 17. Food service was good. We stayed in room 222 which was accessed by a very narrow stairs (no guest elevator) then a very long haul around corners, one step, several inclined ramps, then at the end of the hotel corridor. Room bathroom was adequate and contemporary with a glass walk in shower. Room air conditioner is barely two feet adjacent to one bed side and was very noisy. We preferred the “auto” function to the fan due to the cold air it blew over the bed when the heating elements weren’t active. Above the HVAC was an audio-porous window, and right below is an outdoor firepit that was frequented by loud individuals on St. Pat’s Day until 12:45 am. The Bier Haus wall is adjacent to the room wall which had an extremely loud band until 2 am. The only consolation to being sleepless until 2 am was the vibrating bed massage due to the band’s deep bass production. Because I and my spouse only experienced this during our brief one night stay, I am giving “The Sherman” a break when my experience could have garnered a...
