We wanted to find a really nice place to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. We wanted the Gulf side rather than the east coast because it is so much more relaxing. We found LaPlaya Beach and Golf Resort, and when they found out we were celebrating our 20th anniversary, they automatically upgraded us.
LaPlaya has the best employees of any place that I have ever stayed, both stateside and internationally. The difference in the LaPlaya employees is not that they are all exceptionally friendly and helpful, which they are, but they are genuine. They not only greet you with a smile, but they all carry on conversations, real conversations, not just scripts. If you have a question about where to go or what to see, they offer suggestions and why, to make sure they are the right suggestions for us. They are truly the best employees.
When you head out to the beach, the team of staff will get you situated. They bring over your chairs for you, set you up with beach umbrellas, and put a flag next to you. If you decide you want a drink or something to eat, and don’t want to leave the beach, raise the flag and someone will come out and take your order.
The sand is soft and feels good on your feet. The water was a perfect temperature for relaxing, and was very clear, so even when you are chest deep, you can see the bottom.
Our room was beautiful. We were on the 12th floor, so we didn’t have to worry about closing our blinds. We left them open all night, and while sleeping, when I rolled over, I would open my eyes and look at the stars. And in the morning, we would sit in bed having coffee and watching the news. The view out the window was breathtaking. You didn’t see the beach on the 12th floor from the bed, all you saw was beautiful green and blue water.
The room had a good amount of space and storage. The bathroom was large and contained a jacuzzi shower/bath. If that isn’t enough, you could open the blinds in the shower and look at the beautiful view of the ocean while showering.
The room and bathroom were very clean, and everything worked. The refrigerator was small and stocked. We didn’t want any of the stocked drinks, so we emptied it out and put those items in a drawer and put our drinks and snacks in the fridge.
The most memorable part of our stay was the view from the room. It was breathtaking no matter what time of day or night it was. And being able to watch some of the storms out in the Gulf was really something. The sunsets were colorful and powerful.
There was construction going on. We were told about it on our 1st call to inquire about staying there. Some of the property is still roped off, not all pools are open yet, and as previously mentioned, only 1 of the three elevators was working and it was slow.
None of this made any difference in our stay. We didn’t travel to a resort to hang out at a pool and ride the elevators, and my wife and I were completely good with the restaurant that was open. The elevator was very slow, and they are working to get it up to speed, and to get the other 2 operational. It did provide more time to go from the 12th floor to the 1st, but that’s where we met quite a few couples because of the slow elevator that we spoke with every time we saw them.
I truly believe some people have no idea just how bad the damage was because of Hurricane Ian. The coastline was devastated by Ian, and the fact that LaPlaya remained open and made our visit such an amazing visit on such a wonderful celebration is all that mattered, and I thank them for making our stay such a memorable stay.
Conclusion: We wanted to go somewhere special for our 20th wedding anniversary. We did our research and ended up going to LaPlaya Beach and Golf Resort. Our stay was amazing, our room was very comfortable, and the view was to die for. The staff more than made up for some of the small inconveniences of the construction, and that is what mattered to us. We are going back again, and we might even stay...
