This is a beautiful cabin with long views toward Palo Duro Canyon. There are no other homes within a few hundred yards, so it is very quiet. It is very clean and nicely furnished with all the amenities of home and then some. The kitchen is fully stocked with all the utensils and cookware you could need. The bathrooms had plenty of towels and we found the hairdryer after a bit of a search. The beds have extra pillows with a variety of firmness. The back patio is nicely furnished and has an eastern view toward the canyon. There is a hot tub and grill, neither of which we used; but there are bathrobes if you want to use the hot tub.
The wi-fi is excellent. I streamed video on my tablet with no buffering whatsoever. The TV's are awesome- 70" in the living room and 40" or 50" in each bedroom. Programming is via Directv; there was no programming guide except on the TV itself. So, if you're not familiar with Directv's channels, you might want to look up your favorites before you leave home.
Just a few small criticisms that aren't enough to lower my rating: The cabin has a very strong woody/incense smell. There were only a couple sticks of firewood in the fireplace, so I don't think it came from the wood. Possibly an aroma diffuser in the HVAC system; not sure, but if you're sensitive to strong odors, this might bother you. I got used to it after the first night. Speaking of the HVAC, the furnace was very loud in the master bedroom when it came on. It's in a room behind the master. If you're a light sleeper you may want to bring earplugs. There are no alarm clocks in the bedrooms, so bring your own or reach for your smartphone during the night. Finally, the closets could use some hangers. There were only two plastic ones and a few bent-up wire ones.
tl;dr: We will definitely book this cabin or one of the other Doves Rest cabins the next time we travel to Palo Duro. There are no accommodations this luxurious and comfortable in the town of Canyon, and this was well worth the price. Driving time to the park entrance was only about 10 minutes, as opposed to 20-25 minutes if you stay in Canyon. We also took a day trip to Caprock Canyon S.P. which was an hour and half drive...
Read morePalo Duro has lot's to do for a long weekend or even a week. Four Gables at Doves Rest Ranch was our base for the week and we highly recommend. The staff is very responsive if you have questions.
The outside is a glorious example of a country four gable house with wrap-around porch.
The inside is large, clean & comfortable for relaxing after a busy day. The house is quite remote from other cabins, but still just 5-10 minutes from any activities.
Here are a few activities we enjoyed so much with our 3 generations of family. Just a long drive through Palo Duro Canyon with stops for hiking, cool down in the small river & explore a large cave visible from the park road. Elkins Ranch Jeep Tour . . . our driver made this MUCH more than just a jeep ride!!! Case's family owns the ranch & he drives the Hum-Vee, as well as dozer for trail repairs. He was the best with stories, adventurous stops & just FUN!!! There is a Zip-Line near the park entrance as well that was "exciting". And you don't want to miss the play "TEXAS"!! presented in a patriotic western fashion that pays homage to the difficulties of western settlement in the Texas panhandle as well as the suffering of the Indians that originally inhabited this land. And of course you have to eat so don't miss the "chuck wagon" BBQ meal offered before the play.

Read moreLocation. Tranquil. Luxury. Pet friendly. Seclusion but close to the fun. I stayed at the Phantom cabins (for 1-2 people) this past weekend. I couldn't ask for a more perfect spot for a 48 hr getaway. The "campus" with the other cabins are on a privately owned lot. Swing set and a private lookout area of the canyon, private driveway, all gave it a feel of peace and quiet. There are 5 phantom cabins that are separated by a wooden fence. I enjoyed saying hello to the neighbors watching the beautiful sunrise. The cabin is pet friendly and my dog enjoyed it very much, except for the part where he relieved himself on a small thorny bush. The cabin was super clean on arrival, fully stocked kitchen, bar stools, perfect size bathroom, HUGE TV (perfect to catch March madness games, etc)The location can't be beat. Lastly, I believe the cabins are 1.9 (?) miles to the park and 14 miles to the city of Canyon. If you want to be close to everything, want peace and quiet and a good home base, these cabins are for you and...
