Atlantic Towers Oceanfront — Hotel in Carolina Beach

I had a hard time deciding how many stars to give. We have stayed here before and usually no complaints but this time was a little different. First thing I noticed when we walked into our unit was there was no ladder for the bunk beds. Also no bumper to keep you from falling off the top bunk. Next thing I noticed is the ice maker in the freezer didn't work. I'm an ice lover....but no matter what I did it would not make a single piece of ice. The water was very salty and chlorine tasting - don't drink it! Also the internet here is absolute garbage. I called the front desk and their response was "well ours is working so it must be your device". Ok except it wasn't my device because we tried iPhone, iPad and laptop computer. The only place I could get any wifi was on the balcony and even then it was terrible. As someone who works from home, I am always needing internet - even on vacation. So this wasn't a luxury - it's one of the reasons we chose to stay here. In the past I don't recall having this problem so I'm not sure what changed but I won't be staying here again simply for that reason. It's a necessity for me. I'm not trying to stream Netflix or anything...just checking email and pulling up websites. The pool was very cloudy and dirty multiple times during our stay (outdoor pool). The indoor pool wasn't bad but it was so humid in there you can barely breathe. The vending machines continually stole our money. The bed in the master bedroom was terribly uncomfortable. It had two metal bars or something - that's how it felt anyway. I've stayed at some cheap motels that had better mattresses, and for the amount of money we paid per night (5 x as much as cheap motel), you kind of expect not to wake up sore every day. My daughters goggles were stolen within the 3 mins she left them to use the restroom. And on our last night it sounded like the couple next door had a fight - complete with screaming and someone or something hitting the wall. Finally, it's a minor complaint but ours was a smoking on the balcony only unit but there was NO ashtray to be found anywhere. Those were the negatives. On the positive side, some of those issues are probably unit specific, because again in previous stays we didn't have these problems. We feel generally safe here except for the issues I mentioned. The housekeeping staff does a great job - especially since they had to navigate the mess of four teenage girls in our unit. They were also very nice. We also didn't have to wait very long for the elevators. That's been a major issue at other places we have stayed, but here it was no problem. The most amazing thing about this hotel is the upfront and personal views of the ocean on the balconies that each room provides. I'd recommend the higher floors because the view only gets better and better. Listening to the waves, seeing the Seagulls, watching the sunrise, sunset, waves, people and sand is a surreal experience. The rooms were comfortable, even though ours had some minor damage to certain areas of it. During this global pandemic, the room service still left a bag of towels and other necessities outside of your door and knocked to let you know they were there. All of the food deliveries from restaurants or third parties, such as uber eats, were able to access the rooms with ease. The boardwalk to beach was also literally on site. The staff were very polite and helpful. The negatives are as follows... There were no employees to enforce social distancing within any area of the hotel, specifically the indoor and outdoor pools. Unfortunately, my children and I even witnessed a domestic violence incident between a couple who were drinking alcohol in the indoor pool section which resulted in a man assaulting his girlfriend. We were all so scared that I froze thinking that we might be attacked if we tried to leave; fearing that the man's agression would turn toward us. This family also left tons of litter, including bottle caps that either of my 3yo twins could have ingested and choked on. The second negative is that you must dispose of your own trash, which wouldn't be so bad if the dumpster wasn't at the side of the property. There is also no security, meaning anyone can get on the elevator and come up to any floor without an issue. The view this hotel provides is phenomenal but there are so many areas that should be taken into consideration by management; especially during a global pandemic. Overall thoughts...if I found another hotel offering the same view I'd probably look into it. This hotel has great potential but needs a lot of change. I so badly wanted to rate this a five star but our particular experience wouldn't allow me to. Still, check it out...

This used to be one of our favorite places to stay, but I will say now that this will be our last time staying. The stoves in the rooms do not cook properly for all of the eyes on the stove are severely uneven. The dishwasher in our room the last time we stayed didn't work and made all the dishes dirty, so we had to take everything back out and hand wash them, and the beds were too hard.... but back to my current stay...this times the beds are still hard and creaky, but they're a little more comfortable. The sliding glass door to the balcony is so hard to pull open and close in the living room that I just say "forget it"!! The last time and this time I have had to complain about roudiness in the pool with unsupervised children playing so much that I have been hit in the face hard with a ball while holding an 8 month old baby and this time hit right in the shoulder... not to mention my children almost being hit by toys that are clearly not pool toys. It says no diving and they constantly dive almost on top of you with their parents watching!! I have complained to the front desk and nothing is ever done!! I have spent almost $1000 for a 4 day stay here for my children's spring break for them not to be able to have as much fun as some of the other kids. When we check out this time I will let them know we won't be coming back again. It's too many ocean front places to stay that are more comfortable with up to date appliances and the management will actually make sure pool rules are kept. Oh....also the TV remote is messed up so you have to constantly get up to change the channel, so we just turned it off.... I'm am highly dissatisfied with our current and previous stay.
