I love staying at AmericInn whatever city I am visiting. I had the absolutely WORST experience before arriving at the Detroit Lake's AmericInn!! I received a text to complete my pre-arrival check-in to save time a the front desk. In the early morning of July 11th, I was on my way to Detroit Lakes and stopped to let my puppy go potty and get stretch her legs. I went to my text and started the check-in process. As I was finishing the process the hotel policies came up. It stated "This hotel does NOT allow pets. Bringing a pet into the hotel will result in a $250 fee charged to my credit card". There was a box below this statement which I needed to check that I have read and agreed to the policies. OMG! I need to turn around and take my puppy back home since I would have to pay $250 if my pet came into the hotel!! I turn the car around and head back home....45 minutes away and once again headed to Detroit Lakes from Kansas City, a 9.5 hr drive all by myself. Once I arrived at the AmericInn in Detroit Lakes, the clerk behind the counter was not even friendly, no smile, no greeting. I walked up to the desk and to the right of the counter there was a sign which stated "We are a DOG FRIENDLY HOTEL Please be advised that we have a non-refundable pet fee of $35 per night." What the heck!!! I explained to the clerk about my pre-arrival check-in I completed on the road which states the hotel does not allow dogs at the hotel and if a dog comes, it is a $250 charge!! The clerk said "well I guess our website hasn't been updated." I explained I was in town visiting my aunt who I am the DPOA for her affairs and she asked me to bring one of my puppies to see her. She lives in a local nursing home in Detroit Lakes and I promised her I would. The clerk was unapologetic and her affect extremely flat. I continued with the check-in process and asked the clerk if my request for a first floor room was possible. The clerk said "No" and told me my room would be 217 on the second floor. I took the luggage cart and went out to my car to load up my belongings. I pushed the cart back in and immediately went to the right of the front desk where the elevator is located (at all AmericInns). There was no elevator!! I rolled the cart back to the front desk, rang the bell for the same clerk to come to the desk. I asked her where is the elevator?? She said the hotel does not have an elevator. I was floored! I said to the clerk "there isn't an elevator in this hotel?" She confirmed there was not. I asked her how do handicapped/physically challenged people get to the second floor with no elevator? She informed me "You didn't ask for a handicapped accessible room". I informed her that is correct, I did not but this meant I could not have my aunt who is in a nursing home down the road and come up to my room so we could visit as her room at the nursing home isn't conducive to visiting for very long PLUS I was bringing my puppy for her to enjoy while visiting with me. My aunt IS handicapped, she has to use a walker to get short distances and a wheelchair for longer distances or going on outings. Without an elevator, there is no way my aunt could come to my room to visit!!! I feel this is an unacceptable practice! I will find a hotel in Detroit Lakes where I can bring my elderly aunt over to visit and be away from the nursing home where she stays 24/7. A hotel where if I am on the second floor, has an elevator in it to get my aunt into the room. From the incongruent dog policy to the no elevator in the hotel has made me rethink my decision to ever stay at this...
Read moreI've stayed at both locations owned by this group (Hawley & Detroit Lakes), and am apparently a slow learner.||Their Hawley location's pool was always in disrepair - last I heard the ceiling collapsed, but their staff was always friendly and welcoming so I let it go.||Which brought me to their Detroit Lakes location on May 29th when I was too tired to continue to my intended destination in Brainerd. I had already left another local hotel after deciding the presence of a security guard, and their discussing a current customer, was more drama than I wanted.||Upon arriving, the night clerk failed to inform me they "Have no gas". I should've left then, but I was having trouble staying awake and thought the issue would be resolved by morning - I was very wrong!||Upon entering my room, it was very cold. The thermostat was set at 68, but the AC was still running full blast. I turned it up to 72 and observed it had switched to heat, then tried taking a shower. This is when I discovered there was no hot water. I picked up the room phone to call the front desk and it was dead. Using my cell phone, I called the hotel's main line to speak to the clerk who'd just checked me in moments earlier, and told him about the lack of hot water. His response was appalling; "Oh yeah, that was on a note here from earlier. We have no gas." I was upset, but too exhausted to leave.||After trying to sleep for 2 hours, I finally got smart and stole all the bedding off my second bed, and finally was warm enough to catch some Z's.||At 9:30, my room was still a chilly 70 (I was in Dallas, TX, the day before), and there was still no hot water.||As I made my way towards the "free" breakfast, I stopped at the front desk to inform them there still was no hot water, and I wanted to speak with the manager about a discount. They made a call, and I went across the lobby, in plain sight of the front desk, to eat my pre-made pre-packaged eggs & sausage. It certainly wouldn't pass muster on "Worst Cooks", as an Army vet, I've survived on worse, but wasn't charged $100 for it.||About that manager... I spent about 15 minutes at that table. No manager. I informed the front desk I was leaving. Still, no manager. It's been a week. Still no manager! They're either afraid of confrontation, or just don't care.||I replied to their emailed request for a review, I'm writing this now after completing that one, just as their "Constant Contact" likely is instructed. I'm not sure they really wanted my true experience, but they got it and now so have you.||I'll be seeking a chargeback. I only made it to Des Moines on the 29th and it cost me another hotel stay from not getting my rest in Detroit Lakes. That also cost me another $100, but it was a far better experience.||Do...
Read moreUpon checking in Sun, Aug 18-28, it was explained to me my room would be cleaned every 3 days along with fresh towels & linens so the days would be Wed 21st and Sat 24th. I was in town to help family with an estate sale for my recently deceased brother. Prior to leaving my room early Wed morning I put all my towels on the floor near the tub. When I returned Wed night my room was as I left it. I let the front desk know my room was overlooked, got some fresh towels and called it a day. Thurs morning, I mentioned to the front desk that I would like my room cleaned, apologies and a confirmation my room would be tended to. Upon arriving Thurs, same scenario. Fri morning prior to leaving for the day, the same scenario again...apologies and confirmation my room would be tended to. Then again, arriving at my room after another hot day in the sun....the same scenario!!! I had decided to check out early and return home so I let the very kind lady, Cindy, at the front desk know what all had taken place and I would be checking out the next morning, Sat. Cindy was actually working at the front desk the night I arrived along with a gentleman whom I believe may have been the manager. Cindy remembered the discussion about my room being cleaned the specific days I would be staying. She looked in the "communication log" and nothing had been written up about my room not once being cleaned even though I made mention of it FIVE times!
The hotel was comfortable, the breakfast was a big plus, I did enjoy the pool but the service was very disappointing! I have no plans to return to DL but I do still have family there so it is a possibility. I will definitely book elsewhere.
It has been a very long and tiring 10 days. It was a two-day drive home from MN so I am just now looking at my receipt. It appears I'm being charged for the additional two days by whom I believe is the manager of this property. Now I see I'm being charged for the two days I gave notice a day prior I was not going to be there after all. I believe I'm due a complete refund of the $407.64 that appears I was charged on the 25th upon checking out at 7am, at...
