First the things that went well.||The keys and the locks worked correctly ever time. At least 50% of the hotels we stay at, that have key cards, have issues. Either the key card works once, then must be switched out or the key card works for a day or 2 then must be reprogrammed. Both my card and my husband’s worked correctly every time for 4 days. ||The room did not have carpeting but a type of snap in wood. I like that so much better. It is easier to see if it is clean than a dark carpet. They are in the process of changing out the carpeting in all the rooms so some still have carpets.||We stayed in a 2 room suite that is well designed. Nice big refrigerator and large counter space. Plenty of chairs, and sitting area, as well as a pull-out sofa. The suite was neat and clean.||The hotel is in a perfectly fine neighborhood so safety was not an issue. It is in a quiet location and next to a Casey’s convenience store (with made-to-order pizza) and across from a Love’s truck stop with a Subway shop. The trucks are not noisy or in the way at all.||The wi-fi worked very well.||And now for everything that went wrong||The heater did not work in the bedroom. The thermostat was set at various times from 70 -75 degrees but we could never get the temperature above 67 and it was usually 65. The outside temperature hovered near freezing. When the heater was on in the sitting area, the air blowing out was warm so that room was a comfortable 70 degrees. But no matter what temperature we set the bedroom to, the air always blew out cold. The mechanism could not produce heat. It took us until the last night there to convince someone that it was not the thermostat but the actually heating mechanism. They couldn’t fix it. There was only one blanket on the bed and no comforter so it was quite cold trying to sleep. On the third night I asked for extra blankets. That helped a bit. Finally on our last night, they offered us the one other suite in the hotel but we really didn’t want to move everything. I asked for the connecting room to our suite which was another bedroom and the heat worked in there. So on our last night we were able to sleep in a 70 degree room and not a 65 degree room. ||The cable TV worked for about a total of 10 hours over 4 days. They insisted the technician would come out and fix it but we only had cable for about 2 hours the first night and then for about 8 hours on Thanksgiving afternoon and evening. Complaining did not produce any results.||There are 2 ice machines and neither worked at any time during our stay. The ice machine reserved for their breakfast area did not work either.||There was coffee available at breakfast and in the room but when I asked for tea bags, the employee looked around in a few cabinets like there should have been some but could not find any. I thought they might go out and buy some that day so I asked again the next morning and the guy offered me coffee packs instead. REALLY? If I had wanted coffee I would not have asked for tea. ||IF you are not obligated to stay in Ellis, move on down the road to Hays or Wakeeny and find a different hotel. This Days Inn has gotten so run down and the owner does not seem to care.||IF you must stay in Ellis, be prepared for no Cable TV and no ice machines and make sure the heat in your room works correctly. Also, if you want hot tea, bring...
Read moreRight off the highway. Clean room, comfy beds. Was the room a little dated ? Honestly, I don’t even know - I was there to sleep, not buy the place. The sheets were wrinkled, but they were clean. The pillows were placed on the bed upright and sideways with the sheets folded down for a cute presentation. There were NO hairs or anything gross on them. Bathroom was clean. Toilet had some staining but was clean. I’m only commenting this because of some other reviewer noting they found poop in the toilet. The only gave us one bath towel, one hand towel, and one was cloth- not sure what happened there. But by the time we were needing to use the shower , the cleaning person was in the hall, so it was easy to obtain extra towels. Our room was an adjoining room but I never heard anything from the neighbors and I know there was somebody on the other side because I saw the door open in the hall. The pool and hot tub are indoors in a steamy tropical heated room. The pool is very warm and it was nice for swimming laps. My Apple Watch said it was 10 yards long. The hot tub is quite hot with large jets that hit just below the surface of the water. This was great for hitting my shoulders and upper back. There is a large handicap restroom in the pool area, where you can easily change clothes if you want to have a swim before hitting the road. There is no shower in the pool area. They serve breakfast, but we did not go early enough to eat. 6-9am I believe. I did notice they had Frosted Flakes, Froot Loops, Rice Chex, and Cheerios. I also saw fruit, juices and coffee. There were other items that had already been put up. The room was $86 +tax - a great deal for what you get. I read reviews before going and saw that some said it was very clean and some had said the rooms were filthy. So I asked to see the room before checking in and the gentleman at the desk was nice enough to give me a key to take a look before committing. Of note, we checked in at 1 AM and the gentleman at the desk was friendly and accommodating. It appeared there were two other families checking in at around the same time. There were multiple luggage racks available to take our bags up to the room. The family that owns the hotel also owns the A&W hotdogs and they have a special that you can get a free root beer float with purchase if you mentioned the special. They have ice machine and they also have some vending machines with sodas and snacks. I would definitely stay here again on the...
Read more⭐☆☆☆☆ | ADA Violation Overshadowed an Otherwise Comfortable Stay
The room itself was great — clean, spacious, and thoughtfully stocked — but I cannot overlook the serious ADA violation I experienced during check-in.
When I arrived, the front desk clerk asked to see ID for my service dog, which is explicitly against federal ADA regulations. I informed him that he could not legally ask for that, and instead of correcting course, he then asked to see a badge or vest — again, not required by law. I explained that my service dog does not wear gear during long car rides and that no documentation or visible identifiers are required under ADA guidelines. Despite this, I still went out to the car to get the vest, just to de-escalate the situation. He told me it was company policy to request these items — but company policy does not override federal law.
I even showed him my prescription letter to avoid further conflict. This situation was deeply upsetting and highlights the very real challenges faced by individuals with legitimate service animals. I understand that some guests abuse the term "service animal" to avoid pet fees, but the correct response is not to penalize those who follow the law.
Now, about the room itself — I genuinely appreciated several thoughtful touches:
Makeup remover wipes and extra lotion were great to see
The mini-fridge was clean and cooled well
The iron and board were a nice bonus
Edge guards on the furniture were a smart way to prevent damage
Large bathroom and clean flooring
Room safe was a nice amenity
The privacy cover on the peephole was a welcome detail
However, there were a few quirks:
The new digital thermostat did not actually control the heater/AC unit
Only small lamps with hard-to-reach base switches were available near the bed
A strange, unexplained motion detector was installed in the room
The TV remote did not control the TV at all
And unfortunately, there was construction happening directly outside our room door. The walkway was nearly impassable due to scattered materials — boards, flooring, racks, and ladders blocked our exit.
Bottom line: The room was comfortable, but the ADA violation at check-in made this a stressful and disappointing experience. No business should be operating without a clear understanding of the laws protecting individuals with...
