SAVE this for your next dog friendly trip to Northern California. Super charming, dog-friendly Inn along the Mendocino Coast. If you’re looking for a peaceful and relaxing stay in Northern California, I can’t recommend this cozy Inn enough. Actually it’s the oldest resort on the Mendocino stretch of Highway 1, with cozy cottages and private gardens. Follow @FluffyCotonDeTulear for more dog friendly travel content! 📍The Inn at Schoolhouse Creek (Mendocino, CA) Schoolhouse Creek Inn is 6.2 acres of natural gardens surrounded by forests. The property has 17 rooms and cottages in 11 buildings. Some are stand alone cottages, some are motel style rooms with shared walls and decks. We booked the Tansy Cottage at the same day we needed to stay, while waiting for our desert at Mendocino village and it was perfect, just 5 minutes drive from the restaurant. We had a Queen sized bed, lots of natural light, a cute little patio in the front and a fenced little garden area with a deck in the back. Very peaceful and tucked away from the road enough for a quiet stay! Lots of flowers, charm and character Fluffy really enjoyed the fenced back garden Practical Info for Your Stay: 📍 Right on Highway 1, 0.6 miles from Van Damme State Park and short drive from Mendocino village 🌊Rich Heritage: The property began as a farmhouse built in 1862, evolving into a resort in the 1930s 🏡 Cozy Cottages & Rooms – Most have private yards or decks so humans and pups can lounge outside. 🛏️ Mix of vintage charm + modern comforts (fireplaces, decks, some cottages with hot tubs). 🅿️ Free self-parking on-site in designated spot 🌊 Nearby Dog-Friendly Beaches and hikes 🐾 Super dog-friendly: pet welcome kits, meadow trails, dog park, bowls, treats, trails, meadows, and ocean views Dogs and cats are welcome in designated pet-friendly rooms (up to 2 per room) 🐶Pet fee: $30/pet/night (max $120 per stay). We absolutely loved our stay in the Garden Cottage. It has a small private deck, safely enclosed for our dog, and the common grounds include a huge meadow for doggies to run around and play safely with no roads around. The warm welcome that we and our pooch received was so appreciated. We had initially planned only to stay here for one night as a stopover on a road trip to Oregon. When we saw that there was a minimum 2-night stay, we said OK, let's do that. After spending a full day and a half in Mendocino, and at such a charming place for travelers and their dogs, we are already planning a trip back here as our destination, and will re-book at the Inn at Schoolhouse Creek, for sure. A+ rating!

The Inn at Schoolhouse Creek provides a thoroughly relaxing and enjoyable experience. The natural setting is beautiful, the inn keepers are welcoming and affable--clearly striving to make your stay as pleasant as possible--and the inviting location (just a few miles south of Mendocino) is ideal. We particularly appreciated the exquisite pandemic precautions both demonstrated by staff and requested of guests during our stay this time. Our two dogs had as much (maybe more) fun as we did. I've stayed at the inn several times over more than 30 years. There have been various owners and inn keepers in that period, but they always entice me to return. It's an almost magical place.

Let me start with the positive.... we have always loved our stays at this Inn. So much so, that we got married there! We loved everything about it; the accomodations, the setting, ability to bring our pups, private beach access, the happy hour, the breakfast, and the hottub! We are not sure what happened since we last stayed 5 years ago; possibly a change of ownership, maybe the pandemic. We found little to be happy with during out latest stay. We booked the Water Tower because it sounded great, we had never stayed there, and the private hottub was appealing. Now, for the bad. There was mold on the windows and ceiling, very old laminate floor was peeling up, the room smelled of mold, floors were discustingly dirty (had to cover some spots with a towel to avoid stepping in it), chairs provided were more like uncomfortable office chairs, only one bedside table, no robes as shown in the pictures, no plush towels, no comfy couch, the shower enclosure was rotting and falling apart, and the plumbing leaked. The cover to the hottub is also falling apart and the smell of chlorine coming from the tub was so strong we would not get in it. There is no one onsight to assist! We ended up texting pictures, complaints, and a request to change rooms to the person who booked our stay but had no response. The next day my wife found him in the office. He told her he received the text when we sent it but did not respond. He called the accomodations “rustic.” He reluctantly changed our room to the Cypress which was way better, but still very tired. He mentioned a price adjustment but did not provide one until pressured, and it was minimal. We had invited our best friends to join us during our stay and were completely embarrased for doing so. The Inn at Schoolhouse Beach needs serious remodeling help yes, but at least clean properly! IMO this place is NOT worth the amount of money they charge...

This was our second visit to this location and was overall disappointing compared to our previous visit back in 2016. Firstly there was a lack of clarity at the time of booking regarding payment of the deposit. When I received the booking confirmation it stated that one night’s deposit would be taken, but you actually took 50% of the total cost. It also stated that the rest of the holiday cost would be then taken 7 days before arrival, but 4 days before I had to chase this because the residual amount had not been taken and so I was unclear what was actually going to happen. So there is a clear inconsistency in your approach to bookings and deposit being taken that leaves people confused. On arrival at the property and given the current ongoing issues and risks associated with COVID-19, it was evident that the property had not been cleaned as thoroughly or as comprehensively as envisaged or anticipated. Some clear examples of this were in the kitchen area with a very, very dirty oven, a toaster that was full of residual grease and crumbs with coffee stains all down the side of it which I then had to clean to enable use. The sink plug hole in the bathroom was clearly dirty and full of hairs, plus there was no plug for the sink so you were unable to fill the sink if required to wash. The cottage clearly needs some general updating in terms of decorating internally and externally and it was disappointing to see that basic minor updates had been made to general appearance. The property clearly states masks were required around the property, yet this goes against current updated state and federal guidance for being outdoors and yet staff members were clearly not complying with your own requirements. Will not be making another booking to return to this property in the future and on evidence of this visit would not...

We definitely enjoyed out stay in the Pomo Cottage. We stayed 3 nights for a mother-daughter getaway. The Cottage had plenty of room and perfect size for Us and our 2 corgis. I love how pet friendly the Inn is and we felt very welcome! They left us a bottle of wine, welcome note, area suggestions, and 2 dog beds, bowls, treats and frisbees for our fur babies:) 5 stars for being pet friendly!

I appreciated how well stocked the Kitchen was with everything needed to prepare meals. 5 Stars on exceeding my expectations

I would have given 5 stars except for a few things: We had no mobile service on the property and could not send messages to the inn keeper or make phone calls from the cottage. Yes, there is wifi service but only good for web browsing. We were unable to communicate with the inn keeper to report issues (via text). Our private fenced in yard needed to be cut down and there was poison oak growing back there. We were resistant to let our dogs out in the back due to the poison oak. I tried to contact the inn keeper on several occasions but was unable to call or text them from our cottage.

Last issue: The Shower was horrible (Cold and no water pressure). The shower was lukewarm (for my daughter) and for me, I experienced a cold shower. We stayed 3 nights. I only took 1 shower bc it just wasn't worth it. I was even going to wash my hair in the kitchen sink. Again, I was unable to communicate this with the inn keeper. Strange bc the Kitchen, sink produced hot water.

Overall, the Inn was in a perfect location and the property was very cute, quiet and kept up very well. We would stay...
