Hi all, this is a 6/2025 review from Grant Hills Motel in Galena IL. Our recent stay here was disappointing. We have stayed in this hotel for several years, not only as vacations, but as a place for hunting season as well. Upon arriving for this current stay, we immediately noticed the lack of maintenance, broken sidewalks, faded exterior paint. (The pictures on your site are not current and portray a previous motel) The rooms are outdated, although there are new locks that now work with key cards. The shower did not drain, so we stood in water as showering, careful not to let it flow into the bathroom floor. There were two visible outlets in the room, making up for the lack thereof were power strips behind the dresser and bed frame. The "front desk" was not friendly and she indicated they had only been working at Grant Hills for 2 months. There was a police presence on our first evening and they were detained by three officers for over an hour. We called the front desk to ensure our safety. It appeared the staff, let the van stay in the lot overnight, and subsequently dumped there garbage. The first morning of our visit the grass was cut behind the motel outside our window at 7:45 followed by trimming at 8:15. Nice way to be woken up. We are aware Bill Vincent's family sold the motel after his death. What a shame. We will not stay here again, an we will be happy to answer any inquiries related to this review.
Sheri,
Thank you for your nice note. Galena has always been a favorite place to us and we have spent several nights with your team through the years. Whether vacation, wine get away or even hunting we have always found friendly staff and clean rooms at Grant Hills Motel. We appreciate the room, sorry for the short notice, but the room was nice and held us through the night before beginning the long trip back to TN. We hope to come back one day, but if we don't make it, thanks for all the...
Read moreThe motel and staff were nice. We would have stayed there more then one night except for some noise. My wife and I, along with out dog, went to Galena for the weekend. When we arrived, Tammy who was in the office, explained everything regarding the fees and room rate. We received email receipts right then and there. We were assigned room 32. All was good until bed time. There was a constant tapping coming from either the wall or ceiling that started that night. I called the front desk and Tammy came out to investigate. She heard the noise, apologized and told us there was nothing that could be done at the moment. She thought it could be a pipe. I thought maybe another room. Since the motel was full, that was not an option. That night I couldn’t sleep very well due to the noise. In the morning I looked for another place to stay. We packed our bags and went to the office. Tammy was there and told me she understood why we were leaving. She gave me a refund for the next night we were going to stay there and apologized for the inconvenience. When we go back to Galena we will consider staying there again. The rooms were nice, along with the staff, and it came at a good price. Our dog was comfortable and there is lots of room to...
Read moreStayed on a Saturday and Sunday night. Enjoyed the convenience of the drive up room and location close to sites right off highway 20. Nice clean beds and chairs to sit in. Large yard in the back area for recreation. I'm sure a great place for pet travelers. Hotel staff was very friendly.
Room was affordable for Galena at $69/night but not really worth the cost savings in my opinion.
Room smelled very musty and old and the bathroom smelled of sewer. Only one window in the room would open. Traffic noise from the highway is unbearable if front door with screen is open so it was hard to get air circulating through. Water was very hard and had a thick mineral smell. Fan in the bathroom was deafening when turned on so we didn't use it. Large windows in the room that made me feel uncomfortable opening the blinds. Motel was full on Saturday so there was no parking when we returned so we had to park near the highway.
To be fair we stayed at a brand new hotel the night before in Decorah and only paid $5 more for a night there so it was a hard pill to swallow staying here for...
