My stay at Courtyard by Marriott Portland East was overall a positive experience, with a few minor inconveniences that are worth noting.
First Impressions & Common Areas
The hotel presents itself well upon arrival. The front desk, lobby, bar, and community gathering areas have a modern, welcoming aesthetic that gives a great first impression. It’s clear the hotel has invested in keeping these spaces updated and comfortable.
Room & Cleanliness
My room was clean, which is always my top priority when staying in a hotel. The design felt modern, but some fixtures showed signs of wear—most notably the bathtub. However, nothing was in poor condition or concerning.
Staff & Service
The staff was very friendly, which made for a welcoming experience. One minor issue occurred on my first morning when I discovered the body wash hadn’t been refilled. Fortunately, the housekeeping staff working in the next room quickly resolved this for me. While it was a slight oversight, the responsiveness of the staff ensured it didn’t become a problem.
Streaming Device Restriction
One significant downside for me was the hotel’s policy preventing guests from using their own streaming devices. I frequently travel for business and bring my Google streaming device to make my stays feel more like home. I was informed that this restriction is in place because past guests have failed to reconnect the hotel’s HDMI cable, causing issues for the next person. While I understand the hotel’s perspective, this seems like a minor problem that could be easily solved by having housekeeping check and reconnect the cable when preparing the room. For someone like me, who values the ability to stream my own content, this policy is frustrating enough that I would consider avoiding hotels under this management group in the future.
Fitness Center & Pool
I was impressed with the fitness center. Unlike many hotels that offer only a treadmill and an elliptical, this gym had: • A row of treadmills • Four other cardio machines for variety • Several strength training machines, including one that covers multiple muscle groups (great for athletes) • Dumbbells, medicine balls, yoga pads, and a lat pull-down machine • Fresh towels and a water machine
The indoor pool and spa area also looked clean and well-maintained.
Housekeeping & Room Service Policy
Like most hotels in recent years, Courtyard by Marriott only offers room turn-down service every other day. While this is standard, I do prefer the old way of having my room refreshed daily. If I found a hotel still offering daily service, it would be a strong selling point for me.
Final Thoughts
This hotel delivers what you expect from a Marriott-branded property—clean facilities, a welcoming environment, and good amenities. The modern design, well-equipped gym, and friendly staff make it a solid choice. However, the streaming device restriction and standard housekeeping policy are drawbacks for me personally.
Would I stay here again? Probably, if it was the most convenient option—but I’d also keep an eye out for hotels that allow personal streaming devices and offer daily...
Read moreDisappointing stay. Let me preface this by saying I have stayed in many Courtyard (and other Marriott) hotels and have had very good experiences at all of them until now. Our previous experiences point us to thinking that this is an isolated issue with this location.
Negatives: Toilet paper holder not securely fastened so roll falls off every time you use it. Annoying but not a big deal because it seems like no hotel can seem to figure this out. C'mon Marriott, time to innovate. haha. Found a shirt in our room that wasn't ours so that leads to a question of how clean is it? Not that big a deal still. It happens. Squashed several ants in our room on the 4th floor so again, how clean is this place? Bigger deal and concern growing. Went to the pool and it was so dirty (dirt, hair, color of water, smell) that we didn't even use it. This was pretty disappointing because I had my family with me this trip and we specifically chose this place because it had a hot tub and pool. Ok, now we are sure there isn't a priority on cleanliness at this hotel. Shared the above concerns with a staff member at the front desk and they were not very sympathetic to any of it. They confirmed there is an ant problem in most rooms but said nothing about what was being done about it. WHAT?! in MOST rooms? Sounds like someone should sort that out before you keep taking peoples money for these rooms. They also confirmed that the pool was dirty at that someone was cleaning it that day. Too little too late for us I guess. As for the shirt, when I gave it to them they were confused and asked if we'd had housekeeping that day (we did not), and that was it. They took the shirt. End of conversation.
Positives: First staff member that checked us in was very friendly and helpful Fitness centre was quite nice, well equipped, and appeared clean Location so close to the freeway was nice for us to get in and out, noise wasn't a bother but we were on the opposite side so can't verify closer rooms There is a 7 Eleven and gas station right next to the hotel, very convenient
These are all things that can be fixed. Hope they do and this was just wrong time and place for us. Won't be staying again and would be hesitant...
Read morethe Marriott east Portland (courtyard) has a laundry room that is only accessible with a key card. the cards are associated with the rooms that people have rented for their stay. we were staying in room 316 and went to wash laundry. when we went to get our clothes out of the dryer it was all missing. this was a large load with multiple pairs of dress slacks and dress shirts, under garments, sweats, sweaters, and swimming suits. this clothing was replaced this evening at a cost of $846.82. the hotel investigated by pulling the card swipe information from the door and was able to see when I went into the room to put my clothes into the washer but when they went to the next swipe, they claimed there was no further information to view. they took the machine to the back and had a manager call to the front desk to speak with and never returned with any further information. I accepted that the manager would follow up in the AM but the desk lady with the shaved and bleached hair told my wife that she was lying about the clothes because she didn't feel it fit in the machine. I came later and told this employee that I believed her behavior was highly unprofessional and inappropriate given the circumstance and that I did not appreciate that she disrespected my wife in this way and that I would be reporting her to the manager to which she yelled at me stating she did not appreciate my hand in her face, which it was not, and that she would be reporting me to the manager as well. I left to replace my lost clothes as I am sure it will not be found or replaced by the Hotel. When I returned, I went with my wife to ask if there were any updates and was told by this same person that she was no longer going to interact with us and walked away. The level of disrespect and unprofessional behavior demonstrated by this facility is beyond words. I highly recommend that you find other accommodations for your stay here in Gresham. For reference here is the tracking number given to us by the police department for the report we filed T21001447 Report...
