Don’t stay here! Travel the 20-30 minutes further to stay at a much nicer hotel. We had booked multiple rooms within our family to attend a wedding at the nearby wedding venue. The customer service at this hotel is horrible. The lady said she was the owner then when asked for a card she said her uncle actually was the owner. All we asked for was for my 3 nieces to be able to swim with my daughter for 30 minutes. She said they were not allowed and we would be penalized if they did. We asked to pay extra and offered to sign a liability risk, but the lady was unbelievably rude. We were trying to be honest and reasonable. We said if more “guests” came into the pool area we would leave so the maximum allowance didn’t go over. We made it clear that they were not guests, only because the hotel had no availability for them to book a room, but being that we had 3 rooms, we felt it fair and totally understandable for our request to have our family who we hadn’t seen in a long time to swim with us. There were 3 other people swimming, who were also part of the wedding group. Instead of all the family attending the wedding having fun together part of the family ended up booking a room 30 minutes away at the AmericInn in Cedar Rapids and explained the swimming situation and they were quick to invite us all to swim given the circumstances (only 5 kids total wanting to swim with adults watching them). That is great customer service!! Wish we hadn’t already paid for our hotel because the Cedar Rapids hotel didn’t smell terrible and the staff was super helpful and friendly. The “owner” taunted us to leave a review saying she is the one who will respond and will make it clear. Save yourself the hassle and money and stay somewhere else!
Edited only to respond to the owner’s response: We definitely won’t ever be back and wish we would have read the reviews before booking our rooms here! Very poor customer service as those who read the reviews will hopefully see so they don’t have to go through what so many...
Read moreUpon getting to the room we found it to be very clean and neat. The night front desk person was very helpful, friendly and eager to help. My wife found the bathroom floor to be very slippery. This was a handicapped room so to make sure we brought our own shower chair. The next day I was looking forward to having a nice hot breakfast, I got my wife all set so now to get mine. I was so disappointed on my first bite of the biscuit and gravy it was all cold. This told me that the AM desk person was late in setting up breakfast. Needless to say the food went straight into the trash!! I went to the front desk to get a dirty clothes bag he had no idea what I was talking about and handed me a trash bag. Upon leaving, I was loading up the van, I then went to get my wife that was in a wheelchair to leave. My wife was in and all set to leave and the desk clerk came running out accusing us of stealing the shower chair, I then told him to check the room and I would wait. He went and verified that we did not have their shower chair and said OK you can go all good. No apology or anything. There was good and bad about our stay but you decide. P.S. upon check out I asked for my receipt, he said no receipt for I had used some points I had for a free night. I then responded with you have my CC number on file I want a receipt to make sure no charges were made on my card. After about 15 minutes he handed me a receipt that had $32.09 charge on it so I asked WHAT IS THIS CHARGE FOR? He said no charge you got it back, I was about to blow a head gasket at this point, and I never found out what the charge was for. Stay at your own...
Read moreOur family has stayed at this hotel for the last 10-15 years. It was owned and run by a local woman for most of that time. It was a great place to stay then. Since she sold it, the new owner has given it to his nephew to run. It has gone down hill since then. Last year we stayed at it, it was ok, but this year in December 2018 it has become more run down. The service at the front desk is not welcoming at all. Not even a hello. The room we had was ok, but it needs upgrades. The windows have no solid seal on them. Thank goodness it was a warm December weekend. If not, it would have been very cold in the room or we would have had to listen to the very loud heat unit. Thank goodness we did not experience the bed bugs that were in previous reviews. We did not check out the swimming pool or hot tub, but knowing how the rooms were kept and the service, we would not even use them and take that risk. In addition, the back door on the southwest corner does not shut all the way. Several times, it was left open because it does not shut properly. There was a small sign that said for people to shut the door completely. Obviously, people do not do this and it leaves security and people's safety unchecked and open for theft. Anyone can easily come into this hotel without anyone knowing. In checking out, the man did not even make eye contact with us. He was in the back and it took a while for him to come. He smelled of curry and he was uncommunicative. Wish there was a better owner or another place to stay in Grundy Center, but I do not see...
