Really clean, friendly campground. Great amenities. Dogs are allowed but thankfully just small dogs. The ONLY reason I am giving this a 4 star rating is because there are multiple signs up around the park about NOT feeding the wild life. Game wardens and park rangers are out & about during the mornings & early afternoons, but not when it started getting dark. Deer would appear and ppl would come Running to feed them. It was ridiculous. Ppl stopped their vehicles on the outer road and pushed toddlers out to feed the deer, including big bucks with 6-8 points, while they stood near the car snapping away on the pictures. One night a family of 10, yes 10, feed around a group of 8 deer. Shortly after they left, the deer disappeared back into the woods then we heard the most disturbing noises coming presumably from coyotes that had caught one. I live in the woods myself so I know what a group of coyotes tearing into a deer sounds like. If course, the family was long gone, prob posting them to Facebook, Instagram, etc. WHERE ARE THE PARK RANGERS AT DARK? WHY ARE NO TICKETS BEING ISSUED? IS PUTTING YOUR CHILDREN AT RISK OF BEING COYOTE-BAIT OKAY NOW? Anyway, other than this nightly torture, it's a very enjoyable campground. We left on September 7th after spending 4 cool days there. Wasn't many ppl Sun bathing at the beach but there were a lot of boats on the lake and river. Lots of all ages of kids, so yours should be able to make new friends. And well behaved, I might add. I believe that since the area was so badly damaged by tornadoes 5-6 years ago they've reordered the lots to make it accommodate more campers. But no problems. You won't regret going here, except if it really aggravates you seeing ppl ignoring laws about the wildlife. Lol. PS. Not my kid in...
Read moreThis was our first time to camp here at Lake Guntersville State Park and I must say that I was extremely disappointed. I understand that many people enjoy this type of camping, but I am not one of them. This park has so much potential, but instead the state chooses to just pack as many folks in here as possible. It is such a beautiful setting here, with some of the prettiest sunsets I have ever seen. The bathhouses are nice too. Also, it is a great place to fish and kayak. But, the campsites were terrible in the section we were in. You are 15 feet away from the camper next to you and about the same distance to the one behind you. There is no set design to where your hookups are located or your site grill and fire pit. As in our case, we had to back up further so that our grill and fire pit wouldn't be under our awning. Instead, we had three large high voltage junction boxes either at the edge or right in the middle of our awning. If this wasn't bad enough, the grass probably hasn't been cut in this section in about three weeks. I camp in a lot of state parks in Alabama and Georgia. I understand that there are certain tasks or duties that paid staff perform and other duties that are assigned to camp host. In most cases your camp host are responsible for cleaning bathhouses, picking up trash throughout the campground and cleaning sites once a camper pulls out.(getting the ashes out of the grills and ash/trash out of the fire pit) This was not the case here, the grill was full of ashes and cigarette butts as well as the fire pit with butts and garbage. I am just really disappointed with this visit to one of our state parks and I doubt that I will return. My hope is that someone of power in our Dept. of Conservation will decide that changes...
Read moreWe love DeSoto State Park Campground in Fort Payne, so decided to branch out and try another Alabama State Park Campground for a new experience. We were VERY disappointed in Lake Guntersville State Park Campground. While the lake itself is beautiful, and the full hook-up sites are plentiful, the sites are very small -- much smaller than anticipated -- and are angled very close together so there is little privacy. Also, there are very few trees and those are small, so there is not a great deal of shade on the sites near the shore.||The grass is in SERIOUS need of maintenance/cutting. The "lawn" in between campsites consists only of tons of weeds easily almost a foot tall, and tons of clover which draws lots of bees. I am allergic to bee stings, so I was terrified to walk on any part of the grass.||While the dog park posts signs asking everyone to please pick up after their pets that rule is definitely not enforced, making one more place one is afraid to walk.||A previous review on the campground noted no presence of park rangers, but this certainly was not the case while we were there. The rangers' presence was ongoing, and my one brief conversation with one of the gentlemen was very friendly and cordial.||We live in the suburbs of Atlanta and hence the trip from our home to Lake Guntersville State Park was quite convoluted and took about 2.5 hours each way. If the park had been as awesome and beautifully maintained as DeSoto is, we would have happily added it to our list of favorite campgrounds to visit. As it is, for us it is too long of a drive for too little enjoyment. This is sad -- the lake itself is very beautiful and there is loads of potential if only it was better maintained and the sites...
