We just wrapped up a four day three night stay at Ocean House Inn. This isn’t our first time staying there, we visited around this same time last year. We enjoyed our stay so much last year, we choose Ocean House Inn again.
However, our experience this year ended up being much different. On Saturday evening (night #2) around 11:30 p.m., once I got out of the shower and checked my phone I had 3 missed calls and a text message from a local number. The text was from the owner Sunny and stated “Hey!! I’m getting calls… it’s way past 10pm we have had two calls .. close it down or we will have to ask you to leave”. After reading her text my response was I was in the shower but I did relay your message to the other guest in our group who were still outside. She then sent two more messages the first stated “This is horrible for me hot the same calls last night.. we are trying to be nice but” and second stated “You do realize you are still charged in full even if we have to ask you to leave because you can’t follow rules”.
After she sent this third text I called her. OK I totally understand there are many people staying at Ocean House Inn and “quiet hours” are in place starting at 10. We were on vacation, enjoying the weather and fire pit on the patio with friends. Even the couple staying above us were out on the patio with us still. Not everyone wants to go to bed at 10 on vacation especially in the summer in Alaska when it’s still light out and 65 degrees. We did not realize that we were being too loud because this was the first time anyone had said anything to us. While on the phone with Sunny I explained that once I saw her message I told everyone to be quiet and she continued to say that they kept getting noise complaints about us, during our stay last year we broke her couch and two lamps, and that we were all adults here and I/we should be able to read rules and follow them etc etc etc even after I told her multiple times I had it handled. She would not let it go and just kept going on and on. I was thinking to myself if we were such horrible guest why would she accept our reservation again. But then I remembered that in the few nights we stayed there between the last two years she has made well over 4K off of us.
I feel like she could have handled things differently. She went from never saying ONE WORD to me about noise to threatening to kick us out halfway through our trip and keeping our money which equaled $1,900. She could have just nicely messaged and asked us to keep it down we would have, we did after her and I spoke on the phone. As a business owner you should have the ability to handle things appropriately and respectfully and learn to treat your guest as adults not as children. I do NOT appreciate the way she spoke to me on the phone. We are a group of military families and this was our last trip to Homer before we all PCS later this year. The way she handled things made me and everyone else feel uncomfortable being there. Even if I was to ever come back to Homer I would never give Sunny another penny of my money.
The property is nice but unless you want a 10 pm bed time or you are threatened to be kicked out you...
Read moreWe had a very negative experience. The condo and location are gorgeous. The host/owner Sandy was confrintational and unwelcoming. This is definitely something nobody wants to deal with on their vacation. We got in around 8:15. We could not find heater. Sandy told us not to text her after 8pm and told us to leave the oven and fire on. We later found that the fireplace was electric thank goodness. ||||At 10pm the toilet clogged, overflowed and toilet water was all over the bathroom floor. There was hardly any toilet paper in the toilet. We spent 45 minutes using the plunger in the condo but could not get it to unclog. It was 10:45 pm when we stopped trying and nobody was available to help. I had cleaning wipes with me to clean the floor but we were not able to use the toilet or shower until the following day. Sandy was very upset when we texted her in the morning about the toilet. She told us she thought we were an "elderly couple" that we "used to much toilet paper" and clogging the toilet was our fault. She told us we should have "double flushed". It was appalling how she spoke to us. We were paying $425 to stay in the condo and was shocked with her behavior and lack of accountablility for the maitenance of her rental. She later came into the condo to confront us about the toilet after her husband came to unclog the toilet. She told us we would be more comfortable in a hotel. At that point, we just wanted her to leave the condo and we wanted to leave as well. All of the hotels in town were full and we just wanted to enjoy the rest of the day in Homer. We have since asked for half of the first night stay to be reimbursed.||||The worse part was that we have traveled all over the world. We have stayed in many places, upscale and budget, but have never been spoken to this way by a host or owner. It was more upsetting to be treated so poorly than to try to...
Read moreRegarding the Big Mermaid room: Cute and kitchy, not comfortable or useful. A few examples: The oversized King bed for this small room is slumped like a hammock in the middle, too tall to sit on the edge of, and does not have Any real sleeping pillows; just thick and hard square decorative pillows. There are no chairs or tables to sit at to relax or put on shoes. If you are taller than 6', good luck sitting down or getting up from the toilet. No thermostat, fan, or heater (besides an electric faux-fireplace that is probably too close to the side of the bed for fire code) You may or may not be able to get into your room when you arrive, as we had to wait for someone to come from another property to give us a key. They thought the door had a number coded lock, but were mistaken. I would recommend buying your own half-and-half or cream if you plan on making coffee since our included single use creamer cups were rancid.
Luckily the weather was warm and beautiful, so we were able to spend barely any time in the room. We enjoyed the stellar view of Kachemak Bay and the surrounding mountains from the seaward patio.
TL/DR: If you are active, will be in Homer during great weather, and can sleep comfortably on anything then the Big Mermaid may be a nice...
