A pretty good state park campground that was probably great 10 years ago, but needs a little TLC nowadays. The fact that they are building a new visitors center gives me hope that they're starting the process of sprucing up the campground as well.
The staff at the office were friendly and helpful. Maps of the campground, the park trails, and visitor's guides were all freely available in the office. The staff had knowledgable advice regarding trails and parking.
The sites were a bit closer together than you might hope for in a state park, and though they all had concrete pads and most seemed to be level left-to-right, many of them were rather steeply banked front-to-back. In the electric only section, several of the water fill stations were physically dismantled/broken-down (not sure if they were being rebuilt) and others weren't on the map but did exist.
Even if it's the last site available, don't rent the site next to the bathhouse. It's not smelly or loud, but there is a security light that's brighter than the sun that shines all night long. Speaking of the bathhouses, they were all being actively maintained by park staff, but they're aging and look grimey.
There is a camp store with some basic amenities and souvenirs (the wood we purchased was visibly green/wet and would barely burn), but if you need any last minute groceries, be prepared to go all the way back to the town of Logan. The local convenience store down the road is expensive and had a line out the door every time we drove by.
Nearly every site backed up to wooded areas, and overall it was clean and quiet. It's a nice place to visit...
Read moreLet me start by saying, "WOOOWWWW, WOW and more WOWS'" This place is THE BEST adventure the boys and I have been on. It is GORGEOUS, BEAUTIFUL, FAIRY-TALISH 😁 There is so much to do. I didn't find the 'Old Man's, however, the cave was impossible to miss. They're huge and EVERYWHERE! Around EVERY corner was something more fabulous and exciting as the last. It reminded me of "Lord of the Rings" along w "Jurassic Park". The caves looked like they were dug out in the rock walls. You could live in them they're so deep in. The roots of the huge trees were entangled all over. Trees from up above looking as if they were going to just fall out from the dirt and come tumbling down. We did see the "Devil's Bathtub". I thought it was going to be bigger but it was still AWESOME! The story is that it goes all the way down to the middle of the Earth. We looked like little ants up against the huge rock walls. There were steps dug into the side of the walls but also steps that winded out over the creek water. The coolest set of stairs I've ever seen. We did not get to finish but GUARANTEE we WILL BE BACK next wkend. Starting early. 🌞 I took so many pics but I can only add 50. Everything u will have questions about will most likely be in my pics. Btw, I didn't see any playground, there is picnic areas and it is animal friendly so bring your dog along. He/she would love it! 🐕I give Old...
Read moreThis is a pretty nice State Park campground. The sites are decent sized, especially in the "culdesac" sites. The sites are really wooded unlike other campgrounds I've stayed at. This made it extremely nice, especially during the heat of the day. We had great weather for our trip. The shower houses and restrooms really need updated. They aren't the worst I've seen, but they aren't the best either. The parks need to spend some money on these features. This place could use some shower houses like the one at East Harbor State Park in Port Clinton or South Bass Island State Park. The pool looked nice, it has a couple slides for the kids. We ended up not swimming in it due to the weather being cool. I love the proximity to the Old Man's Cave. It was a super quick drive to get there. You are truly disconnected here, we have AT&T and had absolutely no cell service. It made it nice because my family wasn't messing around on their phones like most families do today. One thing I would recommend is to "offline" download the area map on Google maps so that way if you need to look at the map you can. The first night I forgot some things and we had to go the the local Walmart. I was able to look it up on Google maps because of the offline map. I definitely will make another trip back down here. It's a must visit if you enjoy camping and...
