This is what Old Florida looks like 🌿 After 125,000+ of you watched my Micanopy Cemetery post, so many brought back stories from the actual town and others wondering where it was. So here it is šŸ¤— Micanopy is believed to be Florida's oldest inland town and one of the best small towns in the state if you want that real Florida feel. It's incredibly quaint, known for its history and antiquing, and really feels like you've stepped back in time. The Micanopy Cemetery (which brought most of you here) is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and absolutely beautiful. Definitely worth the visit! Oh!!...Don't miss the Micanopy Museum while you're there! It's a great stop for a look back at this wonderful town and the staff is very friendly and love a good conversation. And you HAVE to stop by Old Florida Cafe for a slice of key lime pie (hands down the best I've had in Florida) and their Cuban coffee is delicious! About 15 minutes south of Gainesville, this is the Florida most people never see. No theme parks, no beaches, but plenty of authentic old Florida charm. Have you been to Micanopy? What's your favorite spot? šŸ‘‡ šŸ“ Micanopy, FL #micanopy #oldflorida #smalltown #oldtown

The Herlong Mansion in Micanopy, Fl is a historic building and now Bed & Breakfast, built in 1845. It’s about 20 minutes south of Gainesville, Fl, and a beautiful getaway that just screams ā€œNorth Florida.ā€ I photographed an engagement session here this week and it was definitely giving the romantic garden vibes my couple wanted for their photos! #gainesvilleweddingphotographer #herlongmansion #micanopy #tampaweddingphotographer #gardenphotoshoot

First off, I thought it was awfully inconsiderate and rude to ask us to park first during pouring down rain instead of allowing us to quickly get out under a dry covered carport during check in (which was what we were instructed to do via email). Ourselves, belongings, and luggage were all wet and muddy. Nobody was behind us waiting. The suggestion of using an umbrella for ourselves and luggage doesn't help. Our room definitely looked bigger, opulent, and better in pictures! Also, online pictures looked like there was beautiful wood trim on the ceiling, but it was just a wallpaper border, and it was coming loose. There were only two small pictures close together on one wall. Another wall had just a mirror above the fireplace. Room felt stark. We found the room to be dirty and dusty. Furniture needs regular cleaning, too! The top of the shower curtain rod was so dirty! Luckily, before I was about to drape a damp towel to dry over the rod, I happened to wipe a small area first. The wipe was thick with grime. Things needed to be repaired like the missing plaster areas on walls, only one working electrical outlet available, broken/loose pieces on the bed frame, and leaking plumbing in the tub. I believe we were getting septic fumes because it was a constant odor in the entire room, and room spray didn't mask it enough! We wouldn't be there for hours and would come back to a stinky room. Beds were horribly hard and made trying to sleep painful. Bedspring(?) made too much noise at the slightest movements. We talked to other guests, and they said their beds were comfortable. Some guests were VERY disrespectful of other guests and were very noisy, especially multiple times each night. Breakfast the first morning was inedible to us. We had to pick up food elsewhere. Salty broccoli (with extra broccoli) and eggs in the morning doesn't ever sound like an appetizing breakfast...to us at least. The second morning was definitely better but lacked in some flavor. Blueberry muffins were awesome, though. It was nice having access to hot tea, coffee, and cookies whenever we wanted, but if you don't care for cookies or if on a diet, there's nothing else available to snack on. The local stores or restaurants mostly close early, so if you're hungry, you'll have to plan ahead. Make a reservation for the Italian restaurant close by, leave, or go hungry. A little table or area to purchase snacks would've been lovely. Especially some of the samplings of locally made foods to purchase would've been nice. I'm giving four stars because the historical house itself was beautiful and grand. The second story porch was awesome and comfortable, and where we spent the majority of the time while there. The area is so peaceful, quaint, and lovely. Definitely wouldn't have booked a two night stay if we knew we were going to have so many issues. We were ready to go home after the first sleepless night. I think spending nearly $600 for a problematic two nights stay was not worth our experience. If I'm going to spend that much money, it better be merited. I was real letdown after always having wanted to stay here since the early 90's...although I really appreciate the chance to have stayed. If, for some reason, we decided to try again, we would definitely pick a different room and one that might more deserve that price! Definitely didn't end up being the restful, romantic, and recharging getaway we desperately needed! Except for one instance, we didn't share any of our concerns simply because we were never once asked while there?!? I wasn't going to leave a review at all because there is so much negativity, but it's really irked me, and I think future guests should be aware.

Response to the owner: Your response to our concerns explains a great deal about your approach to customer service and attention to detail. Did you even bother to read the text of our concern?

First, we did not say we ā€œwanted a full refund or we would write a bad review.ā€ We simply told your staff that we wanted to speak with you before we posted our review. We thought you deserved the opportunity to hear our concern directly and respond to us accordingly. Unfortuntaely, that conversation never took place because you clearly didn’t care enough about an unhappy customer to pick up the phone.

Second, if you had read our comments, you’d know that we had no concerns about the AC. Our issue was no heat when the outside temperature was in the 30s.

Third, because of residual heat in the room, we did not become uncomfortable until after midnight. No information regarding who to contact at that time of night was ever presented to us. In light of the fact that your on-site staff person ended her shift early in the evening, you should have made your number available to your guests — a practice common to most B&Bs.

Fourth, your response did not address the explanation from your staff that all of the second-floor mini-splits need to be set to heat simultaneously before any single unit will provide heat. As she explained it, if one unit fails to be switched to heat, none will provide heat. This idiosyncrasy of your system clearly requires your staff to coordinate all of the remotes before they end their shift on nights when cold weather is forecast.

Fifth, further evidence of your failure to read our comments is your perplexing statement that we complimented you on an ā€œamazing breakfast.ā€ Our comments made no reference to your breakfast whatsoever. The breakfast was adequate but far from amazing.

I’m certain that future guests will have a pleasant experience at Herlong Mansion as long as all goes smoothly, but you have made it exceedingly clear that if they encounter any problems, you will be an absent, inattentive, oblivious owner.

Original Review: For us, the most important characteristic of lodgings is a good night’s sleep, which we could NOT get at the Herlong Mansion. When the temperature dipped into the 30s during the night, the remote in our room would not switch from air conditioning to heat. We were so cold, we had to fold our blankets in half to increase warmth. We still shivered throughout the night.

The nice young woman who checked us out the next day explained that the mini-split HVAC units in the upstairs rooms are linked. This means all the remotes have to be on either air conditioning or heat at the same time. Later, it can be changed, but initially they all have to be on the same system. Amanda, who checked us in, apparantly had not been trained to set the upstairs remotes properly.

The next morning, I spoke with guests from three other upstairs rooms, and none had heat during the night. One woman shared that she woke up cold during the night. Two other two couples stated their room was cold, but both were visiting from Scandinavia and were accustomed to sleeping cold.

The nice young woman who checked us out said she would ask the owner to call us about our request for consideration on our bill. It’s been nearly a week, and we haven’t heard from him.

Herlong Mansion is nicely decorated, the beds are comfortable and the staff is friendly and helpful, but we were very unhappy with their poor handling of this problem. We have found B&Bs to offer much more efficient and responsive customer service when the owner is on-site. Next time we visit Micanopy’s charming shops and good restaurants, we’ll stay in...

It saddens me to write this.

I’m not a rich person. This trip was a big deal for me. I spent almost $400 on my one night stay here with my best friend. I love history and old things, and this mansion has been on my radar for a long time now.

I wish now that I had read the reviews before coming so I could be prepared for Kim’s attitude. It truly ruined the experience, and it pains me to say that.

From the moment I walked through the door, she greeted us with a very fake-nice and mean girl attitude. I clocked it immediately as somebody who has a lot of experience with people like her. The other girl, Christina (I think that was her name) was sweet and treated us with respect. I have no issue with her at all. I wish she had stayed instead of Kim.

She looked genuinely stressed out or perhaps annoyed when we told her where we were from. We were confused by her reaction and tried to save the situation by saying ā€œyes it’s a long drive hahaā€¦ā€ she looked like we gave her bad news. It was bizarre.

She walked away from us mid-conversation a few times which was very confusing to say the least. It felt incredibly rude but we tried to brush it off as awkwardness. It’s a small town.

She also was very upset that I was taking pictures of the mansion. I am a photographer and I love taking photos of everything everywhere I go. I have a film camera and I use my phone as well. She asked, very suspiciously, ā€œso what’s up with all of the photos you’re takingā€ as if I was committing a crime. I said ā€œthe house is beautiful I just want to document it.ā€ And she said ā€œwell I have other guests here, don’t go taking pictures of them.ā€ I said I would never do that… I was so shocked she said that. Nobody was around when I was taking photos. Everyone had gone to bed. Even when they were awake, I avoided the common areas that people were in.

I felt so unwelcome and awkward during my stay. I hate to pull this card, but I suspect she might have thought my best friend and I were a gay couple. We shared a room, and had separate beds, but it is a small town so I can only wonder if maybe that’s where the issue came from.

After reading other reviews, I realize now that it might not even be misguided homophobia. I think Kim is just a negative and mean person and should not in the hospitality business at all.

The house isn’t haunted like some reviews claim. The only negative spirit is Kim herself. She haunts the building and feeds off of bad energy from her guests.

I would only stay here if you have thick skin and are planning to stay in your room away from Kim as much as possible. The rooms were so gorgeous that I’m glad I stayed. I just wish I hadn’t interacted with her at all.

PROS: • Breakfast was delicious. The chef was a very sweet woman. • Waking up to the misty morning looking out on the courtyard was like something out of a fairytale. • The room seemed clean (aside from the tub being questionable) • The local cemetery was also otherworldly. Like something...
