A perfect weekend getaway for our family in the Shenandoah mountains of Virginia. We didn't want to stay in a hotel this time, so I researched & found this lovely inn. We booked the Silk Purse cottage for our family of 4, which had 1 Queen bed, plus a trundle bed in the adjoining sitting room where our 2 boys slept. The sitting room had a door, so the kids had privacy. We shared 1 bathroom, which was fine - though I do suggest that they add some sturdy hooks on the back of the bathroom door because we didn't have space to hang 4 towels to dry. The main bedroom was decorated with antique lamps and charming trinkets in a Victorian style, with a pretty quilt on the bed. In the morning we had a pre-scheduled time to join the other guests for breakfast in the main house, where the wonderful owners warmly greeted us & showed us to the formal dining room to be seated. They soon served us a 3 course delectable breakfast on fine china, and juice served in champagne flutes. Betty also served us delicious hazelnut coffee that was 'to die for'. It was a very special experience & we would highly recommend it. I saw the first review below was very negative & mentioned an issue with race...my husband is asian, and the owners were very nice to him, and all of us! That retired couple who had a bad experience must not have given them a chance to get to know them. They are both lovely!
Mt. Jackson wasn't very close to all of the tourist destinations, but we didn't mind the drive at all. We went to Luray Caverns which was about 20-25 minutes away (which was amazing), as well as to Bear Mtn zip lining (super fun!) Our last stop was to Skyline drive to take in the views on our way home, and take photos. A memorable...
Read moreWow! What a relaxing, recharging experience I had at The Family Farmhouse Inn! The hosts have gone above and beyond to make your stay whatever you want it to be. This spot is perfect for couples, families, solo, or groups of friends wanting a weekend away.
If you are looking for a relaxing stay spending the majority of your time at the inn, you will enjoy the thoughtfully designed grounds with a fire pit, plenty of places to sit and enjoy the greenery, and fun activities like checkers and a performance stage for the kid in you or the kids you bring 😄. The rooms are filled with extra touches of comfort such soft quality linens and comfy beds, a range of coffee snack and drink options, s’more boxes, and smart TVs so you can watch your favorites by simply signing in. I especially loved the architecture and design of the farmhouse.
If you want to spend your time exploring, the hosts have put together a local guide with restaurant and activity recommendations, highlighting some of their own personal favorites. They themselves enjoy exploring the area and have recommendations if you want to know more. I personally enjoyed checking out the cideries and driving around the areas to take in the views of the rolling hills. I hope to come back in the fall to see the changing of the leaves and check out Bryce ski resort in the winter.
It was a quick trip for me coming down from DC. I will definitely be back to disconnect and explore Mount Jackson and disconnect at the Family...
Read moreWe had a wonderful stay! We came up to Harrisonburg for Family Weekend at JMU, but all of the hotels there were either full or too expensive. So glad I stumbled across Roadhaven 1830. It's an easy drive, about 30 minutes north of JMU, and well-worth the drive. Our room was clean and comfortable and had everything one could want or need...fridge, microwave, Keurig, glasses, to-go coffee cups, hairdryer, luggage rack, full-length mirror, coat hooks, even local tourist information. It is close to the interstate, so we could hear the trucks when we first walked in, but the noise machine in the room blocked that out when we went to bed. We chose the summer night setting which matched the location perfectly. Linens were crisp and fresh and check-in and out was simple and fast. We were not there long enough to enjoy any of the gardens, but could see lots of fun things from our window that would make this a fun stay for families with children. So glad we found this little gem...we will absolutely stay...
