We stayed at The Break this past weekend to celebrate my mother’s birthday—a special trip with my husband, our 3-year-old daughter, and my mom, who had her own room. I booked the reservation over three months in advance and had multiple communications with the hotel leading up to our stay, including dinner reservations at the hotel restaurant. At no point was it mentioned that the hotel would be undergoing renovations or that dining options would be limited.
First, the positives: Our second-floor room was spacious and comfortable, with a nice-sized balcony and a great view of the water. It was quiet at night, and the air conditioning worked well. The staff we encountered were friendly and kind. We enjoyed the heated pool (note: no shallow end for small children) and the small outdoor sauna, which was great on breezy days. The location is convenient—an easy drive to the beach—and the hotel offers free bikes (though we didn’t notice helmets or child seats available. Maybe you have to ask reception if they have these available).
Now the disappointing parts of our stay: Upon entering our room, there was a musty/old smoke smell in the entryway, which thankfully didn’t persist throughout the room. The shower design was flawed—the soap dish blocked the door from fully opening, and the ADA bench made it tricky to squeeze in.
Our dinner reservation—which we had expected to be on the rooftop restaurant with sunset views—was instead held in the breakfast room on the first floor, with no prior notice of the change. The menu was extremely limited, and while the food was fine, the experience was not what we were promised or paid for. The staff explained they were in the midst of a management transition, but that doesn’t excuse the lack of transparency. Had we known, we would have booked elsewhere.
After dinner, we were told we could enjoy drinks on the sunset deck—what we found was a small space near the HVAC units with no ocean view, not the advertised rooftop experience. Meanwhile, the actual rooftop deck appeared closed for renovations… yet somehow open the following night for what sounded like a private party, which felt especially frustrating as paying guests.
Breakfast was shockingly subpar for a hotel charging $700+ per night. One morning there was barely any food left an hour before closing, and what was there—rock-hard pastries, nearly-empty trays, and poor coffee—felt more like a budget motel than a luxury stay. On another day, there was a server, but again, the options were limited and disappointing (e.g., granola but no milk or yogurt). Housekeeping also left a used rag on our sink after cleaning, which did not help our impression.
We raised our concerns with the receptionist, who was understanding and promised to speak to management. In the end, the only offer we received was a discount on a future stay, which we declined. Sadly, we have no desire to return.
For nearly $3,000 across two rooms for two nights, this was not the experience we hoped for or were led to expect. A lack of transparency, substandard food and amenities, and a general sense of disorganization from new management really soured what should have been a memorable...

NOTE: The first time we went last year 2023, it was nice & just a few minor issues but we loved it. The hotel ambience is still stunning and beautiful, but that is as far as it goes. This time was horrifying!!! Our friends told us it was a romantic adult getaway. It is defiantly not. I see in several of the other low reviews just a year ago, the manager says, thank you for your feedback, we will try to do better. They did NOT get better. I think at this point the owner needs to get involved. We won’t be coming back. I would say the Break Hotel Is Broken! But I highly suggest The Hotel Maria down the street in Westerly RI (“Amazing Place”) Huge beach right in front of the property. Plenty of...
Read moreTo celebrate my birthday this past weekend, my daughter booked two rooms for two nights at a cost of $2770. The booking was made in March and from then through this past week, she had several telephone conversations with Break staff regarding the rooms, accommodations for my three year old granddaughter, and restaurant reservations. |Relying on the hotel website and these conversations, we were all extremely excited about our upcoming visit. The rooftop sunset bar/restaurant as well as the breakfast offerings appeared on the level to be expected if one were to spend close to $700/night.| At no time from booking until arrival did anyone inform us that the rooftop restaurant would be off limits and the breakfast room adjoining the lobby would be the location for our dinner reservations.| Upon entering the breakfast room Friday evening, the staff apologized profusely and informed us that the hotel was in the middle of transitioning to a new restaurant contract and thus the menu was limited to only a few very basic appetizers and entrees. The staff tried their best but the food was at best barely acceptable and bore no resemblance to the photos on the website. In comparison with the following morning breakfast however and renewed apologies from the sole staffperson, the dinner was sumptuous and gourmet. Breakfast was barely edible, featuring stale rolls, bagels, a few cuts of fruit, and awful coffee. While the breakfast today was an improvement it wasn't even possible to get milk for our coffee.|After several discussions with hotel management staff we were offered a credit toward a future visit. As the saying goes, fool me once….|This was supposed to be a special occasion. I do not normally splurge and spend anything close to $700/night each for two rooms. While the rooms themselves were very comfortable and spacious and the staff as helpful as possible, the value of our visit was more accurately in $400/night category. (Even at that price, the shower door in my daughter's family's room should have opened more than maybe ten inches because of a badly installed soap dish).| Adding insult to injury, the hotel opened the rooftop bar/restaurant to a private party this morning. Why couldn’t it have been open all weekend if it was so easy to open for a group today? Why couldn’t the hotel bother to make a phone call informing us that the restaurant was basically closed and that there would be no breakfast service? Why wasn’t this mentioned on the website? This was misrepresentation on a grand scale and no one at the hotel disagreed. Going by conversations at neighboring tables at breakfast, my family was far from alone in feeling great disappointment and frustration.||If you are contemplating a stay at the Break - call first before booking and get a guarantee in writing that what is represented on the website actually exists. Don't trust the huge lit neon sign on the hotel announcing that the sunset...
