This is seriously THE place to be in Norfolk!
Yes we were here for a wedding that was actually in Pierce...but it still
The pictures speak for themselves, but here are some details!
Hotel/Layout: The entrance is perfect for the area, the Lodge feel and still very welcoming!
This place is BIG. If you are handicapped stay by the front desk for easy accessibility to breakfast and the pool. If you are not handicapped but don't like walking you will survive!
We stayed in the "deluxe" part which I believe another guest just told me was "The new part" either way it was fantastic! We were in the back of the building on the top floor and then in the back of the floor. Definitely a walk but worth it! (Also side parking over there with a door)
Front Desk/Manager Upon arrival, we were greater and check in by the Manager! She was very informative and was able to answer my (many) questions! I had a personal matter that she was very helpful with and made us feel so very welcome. The rest of the staff were equally helpful and kind.
Breakfast: above and beyond what you would think for continental. Yet very fitting for the Lodge!
Rooms: I should have asked to see other rooms for that I am sorry! We had an amazing room. The beds were as if clouds in the sky were hugging us..as you can see my son's feelings are the same. The rooms are big and spacious. The desk was extremely useful for work as well as a good size. The bathroom has a sliding "barn door" so not have much for sound privacy, still sticks to the theme and does the job!
**The beds are very tall. My son used the ottoman for a stool. He loved it with no complaints just an FYI
Pool: Yes. Just YES. The pool is through a door on the other side of the fireplace at the front desk This is the perfect example of how a pool should look, feel and be in a Lodge. The details on the railing can keep you occupied for days. Yes, those are patios INDOORS. The bottom floors just have tables outside the rooms but it works well if you have kids! The Hot tub over there in the corner is big enough to not have to be too close to others and small enough to have a conversation without being close to others. When we stayed there happened to be quite a bit of kids there also. This worked well with my 8-year-old. Even though this pool seems "basic" they made it fun! All the seating and tables were great and taken care of. They do have towels for you at the pool so no need to bring down room towels. Not one person listened to the no food/drinks policy. I didn't even notice it on the door going into the pool until our second time there. All of us did pick up after ourselves and didn't spill anything and of course, didn't have glass.
Sandbar Grill The restaurant is of course on the exact opposite side from where we were staying. So after a long walk and already tired from the pool. From the hotel to the restaurant/bar you walk through a "greenhouse" area and it's wonderful! We ordered WAY more food than we could eat. After getting dessert first we decided to get the rest to go and eat in the room! Raspberry cheesecake: great! My son of course took it after "trying a bite" Vanilla ice cream: we are from Texas AND live in the town of Blue Bell Ice Cream(but this was great, not sure of the brand) Nachos: MASSIVE order WONDERFUL taste Cesar Salad: again MASSIVE order also wonderful! Quesadilla: just cheese for the kiddo but it was made with these wonderful possibly handmade? Tortillas! (Also large)
Cleaning persons: The rooms were pristine! I add this part for a reason. I didn't take pictures when we first walked in the room(kiddo on the bed) so I asked them to just come to make the beds. The ladies were so nice and you can seriously tell they are happy at their job! That is such a big deal to me!
*Rooftop Terrace only available/open for pre-booked parties/events
**Putt Putt The biggest if not the ONLY real complaint we would have is this. This was/is such a great feature to have! Just not well taken care of and many "hazard" areas where the balls just go in the water no...
Read moreI just want to make this clear that these details were made known to the front desk staff on the second day on one of their comment cards. But nothing was addressed with us during the 4 day stay we had with them. Seemingly they do not care, as was the attitude of Joan at the front desk.
I would have asked for a partial refund for the poor professionalism and the things we encountered at this establishment, but figured the comment card meant nothing, it would only be a waste of time.
First, I want to say the drive up to the building was impressive. Things appeared inviting. The lobby was gorgeous and the décor wonderful. However, arriving early was unaccommodating for the staff, and it seemed to perturb them.
The breakfast was nice, could show some variety for the days we were there, especially being an Ascend hotel. The place was clean and kept well stocked.
The pool area was good. Only one day was the pool too cold too use. We think they must have added fresh water that day. The hot tub was pleasant. Towels were an issue two of the days we were there.
The room was comfortable. The beds wonderful. The tv reception sucked. The cobwebs on the lamp shades and the dust bunnies under the tv were hideous. The wallpaper was peeling off in the one bedroom and the blinds and window latches needed attention.
The hide away in the sofa was awful. Should have had a new mattress years ago. My daughter had no comfort what so ever on this bed.
The refrigerator was seriously in need of defrosting.
Finally, the guest book on the desk had all the pages falling out. Picked it up for area information and had to clean up all the pages off the floor.
As I say, for an Ascend Collection hotel, which I deem as the premium of the Choice Hotel chain and I, a Choice Privileges Members, I was disappointed in the experience.
Things can become better and I would love to revisit this hotel in the future to see...
Read moreThe hotel itself is clean. The wooden lodge fell from the outside walking in it gave a nice comfortable feel. Knowing that a full breakfast was offered allowed me to save time without looking for a good restaurant after waking up. When it comes to the room, the layout is as normal as it gets. The beds are a bit high, sitting on a two (2) foot-tall pedestal, making it a clime for anybody that resembles the size of a Hobbit or smaller. The lighting was nice and the T.V. had plenty of channels. My issues came from the bathroom. The sliding barn-style door has a door stop on the rail, but it was pushed back so far, that if you were holding the handle from the inside of the bathroom you would smash your hand in between the handle and the door frame. The handle screws were also loose making it seem as if it would fall off. The shower is a walk-in style with a glass door. When you turn the water on for a shower, you MUST put a towel down on the floor in front of the shower door or you will have water on the floor simply because the gap between the door and the floor allows a lot of water the pass in between. While staying in the room, we would find random trash here and there. The worst one is a partially finished Jack Daniels wine cooler. If my kids (younger than 5) had found this first, I would have made more of an effort to bring it to the desk attendant's attention. Lastly, the pool was not open which was frustrating.
Overall, the hotel is nice. The room was good but could be better if staff took more time to look through the entirety of the room for trash and other items. I would not mind staying here again. I will just have to do my due diligence before...
