Oh boy, where do I begin? My fiance, pup, & I needed an affordable + close-by place to stay for a night, and unfortunately, we found this place. When I went to check in, I was informed by the clerk that there was a line (even though there was 3 people in the lobby including myself) and that he was taking care of another customer.......who was standing 10 ft. away from the counter. So I stepped back and waited. We were given a room that smelled of bleach or some other potent cleaner. Fine, I guess, since it's better than smelling of garbage, etc. The room itself was acceptable except that the wifi signal was weak, the TV did not get half the channels, & the phone was not working at all. Then, on my way back from getting ice I saw a ratchet woman get out of her car that was parked in front of our room. After a few minutes or so we noticed that she not only left her car running, but she also left her infant in the back seat alone. I went to the lobby to inform the clerk about this, who then went to the back room and didn't come out. When I went back to the room, this ratchet woman finally came back a few minutes later. The whole time her baby was crying in the backseat. This was about 15 minutes later. 15 minutes that she left her infant unattended with her car running. When she noticed my fiance & I looking at her through the window, she started shouting at us. Couldn't make out what she was saying, but I'm sure it wasn't friendly. I went out to say that we were concerned about her baby being left alone. Mind you, I wasn't shouting or raising my voice at all. She continued to yell at me. Then her trick came out from around the corner because he heard the commotion (her commotion, not me). He was getting in my face in a threatening manner, and almost pushing me back into my room with him following. Also, the ratchet woman was still shouting at me/us from inside the car. Finally the room door was slammed shut, but do you think that was the end of it? Nope. She kept shouting from outside as well as beeping her horn. We immediately packed our things and left when the coast was clear. After that I went to the lobby explaining the situation, saying that we were checking out and not paying for the room. The clerk had to get the manager. When he came out, all that he offered was to change our room and refused a refund. The clerk also mentioned that the ratchet woman left, so why should be we be concerned. Alrighty then. FYI - all of this happened about an hour after we checked in. An hour. So on our way out of there, we called customer service twice to complain and get a refund. The 1st time, the representative couldn't get a hold of the manager. The 2nd time, another rep said that it was up to the manager's discretion to refund us. So I tried Facebook as a last resort. Luckily that worked. But because of this situation, I will not stay at another Motel 6 again. I won't even stay at any of the other hotels that were next door to this one. For a hotel/motel to allow working girls to do tricks there and not care about it at all? ...
Read moreSomewhere between Bukowski and Jarmusch lies the Motel 6 in Hammond, IN. Room 115 has seen some things. Some dark, twisted, disturbed things. I feel dirty trying to find words to describe our memorable and surreal experience there.
I’ll start with a word of praise for the person at the front desk: competence! I do not blame you for doing your job as quickly and efficiently as possible. Thank you for processing the charge and handing us our keys and telling us the location of the room relative to the office. The brief interaction with you was the highlight of our stay.
As for the room, I hardly know where to begin. Perhaps with the inch tall gap under the door? It graciously allowed rainwater to flow into the room and create a small pond. The roaches in the room didn’t reveal themselves until the middle of the night, but we had already assumed they lived there. The broken switch plate and outlet covers, coupled with the exposed electrical wires, caused some alarm. We did not stand in the aforementioned water and touch anything electrical, so we were spared the joy of finding out if those were live wires. The sink didn't drain. Large piles of crumbs and areas of glitter and dirt on the bathroom floor made it clear that housekeeping was just a vague suggestion. This sense was reinforced by the large smear of something brown on the floor in front of the toilet, which we presumed was feces. The stained sheets and the human hair on the pillowcases and stuck to the bathroom wall suggested that management and ownership have given up caring. The refrigerator was frozen inside, with a large sheet of ice and frost coating the rear wall inside of it. Clearly, maintenance is as unnecessary at this location as housekeeping. I have photos of almost all of this. Room 115 was horrific.
Bonus prizes outside the room came in the form of other guests with their revving motorcycle engines and spinning donuts in the parking lot. This was enhanced by the guest with her pit bull (she was clearly the sanest person living or staying at this location) and the people fighting in the parking lot of the hotel next door.
We liked that the building did not collapse on us. We liked that no one burned the structure down or caused it to explode. We liked that no one broke down our door while we were there.
We barely slept for four hours and left in the middle of the night, grateful to escape and move on. It makes the skankiest single room occupancy hotel on skid row look appealing. You don’t just want to cross the street to avoid it and its denizens, you want to climb back in your vehicle and flee the area.
Even at his most debauched and when actively searching for the depths of existential Hell, one doubts that Hunter S Thompson would’ve been willing to stay in room 115.
The building would be improved by being razed and replaced with an empty lot. Which should then be torched with a flamethrower and doused in thousands of gallons of bleach. Sometimes you just don’t want someone to leave the...
Read moreI have stayed at this location many times before with not much problems but this last stay the lock on my room #227 malfunctioned and locked me out of the room at about 5:15am. I only went outside to clean snow off my girlfriend's car as she had to go to work so I had on only my coat and boots and pajama pants - my cell phone was in the room. I went to the front desk at that time and the lady tried to open the door but could not. She told me that she would give me another room until she could get my room door open and she would let me know as soon as possible. The room she put me in was a handicap room that the TV didn't allow me to see the channels on the menu guide and the telephone did not work. I sat there in the room for about an hour then I went back to the front desk to find that there was another employee working front desk. She was so very rude and unconcerned about my dilemma her response was this type of thing happens all the time.I told her I really needed to get my things out of room #227 because I had to go to my daughters sporting event that was over an hour away drive and the weather was bad. She told me that she could do nothing because the maintenance guy had a set time to come to work and that I had to wait. So I waited in the lobby for over an hour when she told me that the maintenance guy would be late. When I asked to talk to the manager she told me that she was off that day and I asked her to call her so I could speak to her. She then got out her cell phone and went in the back and talked with her. She came back to the desk pick up a paper and threw it on the counter and told me to sign it. It said I would receive a $20 refund on my credit card within 3-5 days. At this point I was livid I was not able to reach the people that were depending on me to be at the sporting event because I did not have my cell phone and the telephone book was useless. Standinding outside in the cold with the maintenance man was having a hard time opening the door as he was drilling the lock. Luckily I did have my car keys so I drove to pick up my daughter who was about thirty minutes away round trip. When I arrived back at the man was gone but the room was open. My clothes cell phone and money was all there but now its about 10:30 and a house keeper knocks and asks me if I am leaving at checkout time I told her yes but I did need some time to gather my belongings. I told her about my ordeal but she told me I needed to tell that to the front...
